2. White Vinegar as an Herbicide
– White Vinegar has known acidic properties and many household uses.
– Facts About Vinegar
– This experiment test the practical use of White Vinegar as a solution to kill garden
weeds.
3. Hypothesis
– White vinegar sprayed on to a bed of weeds will kill the plant it makes contact
with.
– Variables:
o Independent – Solutions sprayed on plant
o Dependent – Death of plant
o Control – Type of weed (senecio jacobaca), soil type, temperature
4. Purpose / Implications
– This experiment could be necessary evidence to support white vinegar as an
alternative to commercial herbicides. Observation and data collect will be
performed daily to note the progression of the ragwort plants. The experiment
will last approximately a week. Further experimentation could reveal long term
results.
– If the hypothesis is supported, then Plant A will show signs of substantial
deterioration. Further investigation should ensue.
– This experiment could lack the overall depth needed to cause change in
herbicide use.
6. Procedure
➢ Prep Planters boxes
➢ Place weed of choice in both plant boxes (senecio jacobaca)
➢ Add soil equally to each box
➢ Add small amount of neutral water to each box
➢ Label boxes Plant A and Plant B
➢ Spray Vinegar solution on Plant A (leave Plant B untouched)
➢ Store plants in temperature controlled area
➢ Allow plants to sit for a full week, record results
