Reliable direct assembly of thin-walled
components
Direct assembly has proven to be an especially effective
fastening technology. The advantages with regards to
quality, efficiency and assembly - for example due to parts
and weight reduction, decreased assembly costs and times
as well as component size reductions - have supported its
leading role in fastening technology.
But the direct assembly reaches its limits with thin-walled
components made of various materials, due the low thread
engagement. For these application cases EJOT has de-
veloped a number of standardised fastening technology
solutions that are attuned to the material and the service
condition and that withstand high loads in many cases.
The EJOT "boss" family, in combination with the DELTA PT®
screw, offers the advantage of direct assembly, despite the
special demands of thin-walled components. The design
and the material of the boss offer additional product advan-
tages, such as ease of recycling or automation.
The newest "boss" generation with adjustable wall thickness
compensation (EASYboss®
V) offers additional cost saving
potential, due to standardisation and other "intelligent"
features.

Assembly
The EASYboss®
is assembled through snap fitting side-
ways to the fastening direction from the edge of the part or
through an access hole in a flat component. The injection
moulded EASYboss®
V made of PA66, can be assembled
easy and safe due to the ergonomic form without any
sharp edges -  and it offers a significant potential for weight
reduction.

Fastening process with DELTA PT®
40
The EASYboss®
V has been developed to fasten a posi-
tioned clamping part with the EJOT DELTA PT®
40 screw
in a process reliable way (for further information about the
DELTA PT®
see page13). This ideally coordinated system
solution ensures a dynamically safe joint.
Due to the self-tapping DELTA PT®
thread, high self-locking
of the "boss" and screw system is guaranteed. The high de-
gree of thread engagement of "2x nominal screw diameter"
prevents loosening of the joint, even if a loss of clamp load
due to relaxation of the material occurs.
In addition to easy and problem-free fastening, the inte-
grated anti-rotation protection guarantees 10 times repeat
assemblies.

The EJOT EASYboss®
V is a fastening element for assembly
with components of varying thickness. The resilient screw
boss equalises the clamping thickness and at the same
time applies the clamp load for the captive pre-assembly.
Dynamically safe fastening element
for varying component thicknesses
The EASYboss®
V is mainly used as a screw boss, subse-
quently assembled to components where direct assembly is
not possible, either due to a  lack of installation depth or due
to difficult tool conditions.
With the EASYboss®
V, unlike other fastening elements, the
problem of corrosion is a thing of the past.
Operating principle
The spring supported boss of the  EASYboss®
V adjusts to
the respective component thickness, and offers application
possibilities for varying wall thicknesses. This way the
EASYboss®
V offers an enormous potential for standardisa-
tion and part reduction.
In a non-assembled condition the contact pressure, which
is due to the opposite spring elements, ensures the firm
hold of the EASYboss®
V to the component.
This also prevents possible falling off of the fastening ele-
ment due to vibration, for example during transport.

Automated assembly
Development focus of the EJOT EASYboss®
was the design
of an all-around improved alternative to the still commonly
used sheet metal clips. Main fields of application for the
EASYboss®
are designs where direct assembly is not possi-
ble. Reasons for this are insufficient installation depths in the
component or other tool related conditions. Further possible
uses are in thin-walled components made of various materi-
als, for example thin metal sheets.
Installation
The EASYboss®
is assembled just like the EASYboss®
V,
by snap fitting sideways to the fastening direction from the
edge of the part or through an access hole in a flat compo-
nent. Tolerances of the hole pattern can be reliably compen-
sated by the fastening element. Different sizes are available
for various fastening situations. In particular the combination
of EJOT DELTA PT®
screw and EASYboss®
offers ideal
prerequisites for the direct assembly into plastic.
Numerous sizes
For various screw diameters (3.5 mm - 6.0 mm), clamp
thickness (1.0 mm - 6.0 mm) and hole spacing (5.0 mm -
15.0 mm) many different standard sizes of the "EASYboss"
are available (see pages 8 and 9).
To differentiate between the "EASYboss" sizes, they are
coloured differently. They can be made from the materials
POM, POM XAP, PA (GF) or PP (GF).

Process reliable assembly
Another advantage of the EASYboss®
family is the suitability
for fully automated assembly. The parts are directly clipped-
on the respective component in a fully-automated, process
reliable way and with a very high number of cycles on the
assembly line.
This fully automated clipping process can be easily integra-
ted into the assembly line, e.g. for the serial production of
instrument panels.
No "catching" of the parts
Contrary to metal U-nuts the development and design en-
gineering of the EASYboss®
and the EASYboss®
V has put
a special focus on preventing catching of the parts in the
feeder bowl.
This guarantees trouble-free conveying and feeding of
the EASYboss®
products at all times during the assembly
process.
100% installation control
The fully automated assembly also offers the additional
advantage of a 100% installation control of the "EASYboss".
This ensures that exactly one EASYboss®
is pre-installed to
every fastening point.
A downstream visual inspection of every fastening point
can be completely omitted. This facilitates further savings
potential for the respective assembly line.

The EJOT VARIOboss®
HP (“High-Performance“) is a mul-
tifunctional fastening system made of plastic. Main fields
of application are surface assemblies that require fastening
elements with variable snap-on thicknesses due to varying
thicknesses of the substructure.
Installation:
The "boss" is assembled through pushing in assembly
direction into a square hole in the substructure. Manual as
well as semi and fully automated assembly is no problem
with this special fastening element. Optimum functioning is
guaranteed through a combination with the EJOT DELTA
PT®
screw.
Function
After installation, the snapping hooks of the VARIOboss®
HP return to their initial position. Due to the constant force
of the connecting springs they are permanently pressed
against the substructure. Fastened with the EJOT DELTA
PT®
screw the snapping hooks cannot spring back - the
result is a strong and very reliable joint.
The EJOT®
SQUAREboss is particularly suitable for compo-
nents with low insertion depth. The outstanding fastening
characteristics are even more apparent in combination with
the DELTA PT®
screw.
Installation
The EJOT®
SQUAREboss can be fixed to the substructure
by manually pushing in the assembly direction. Small sheet
tolerances can be be compensated and automated assem-
bly is possible with this fastening element as well.
Function
The snapping hooks of the SQUAREboss latch into a
square hole and after positioning and fastening of the com-
ponent, the hooks are pulled against the substructure.
The result is a particularly reliable, dynamically safe joint.

Individual fastening technology
A number of standardised elements for almost all fastening
technology tasks are part of the "boss" family. If additional
features are required, the EJOT application engineers can
help and design a custom-tailored product for different
applications.
Varying requirements
The application range is as broad as the design possibilities.
High torques, pull-out loads or strength properties can be
realised. It is also possible to implement various accessibility
cases, space requirements or fastening situations with a
specific design of the "boss".
Development partnership
During the development phase, in the beginning of the
project, the customer can receive support and advice for
his particular fastening solution from an EJOT application
engineer or the product manager. The customer can rely on
fast, reliable and target-oriented support and cooperation
with EJOT during all stages of the project.
Early involvement of the application engineers in the com-
ponent development is the key to project success, since
any necessary design changes to the geometry of the faste-
ning point are still possible in an early stage of the project.
Focus on customer benefits
In a development partnership with EJOT the customer
benefits from the innovative calculation programme for
fastening elements from the EJOT "boss" family. For exam-
ple the torque curve during fastening of the "boss" can be
determined in an early phase of the development with the
prognosis programme DELTA CALC. Design modifications
can be implemented right away if necessary.
Expert partner companies are available for the the pro-
duction of laser sintered sample parts. Samples and serial
production tools can also be manufactured in our own
tooling department. This guarantees short delivery times for
customer requests and a fast processing of the projects.
The product features of the EJOT DELTA PT
®
screw are the
result of long-term practical experience in the direct assem-
bly of thermoplastics.
A research programme based on the mechanical parame-
ters of many thousands of applications and test assemblies,
has proven that reliable clamp load calculations are also
possible for thermoplastic material (compare to VDI 2230).
Parallel to this a prognosis programme for the joint design
and for the new geometry of the EJOT DELTA PT
®
screw
has been developed. The result is a robust and modern fa-
stener that provides reliability even in extreme applications.
Combination with the "boss" family
These developments are also utilised in the combination
of the DELTA PT
®
screw with the products from the "boss"
family. With the possibility of pre-dimensioning with DELTA
CALC, the required clamp load can be adjusted accordingly.
The large core cross section offers a high degree of safety
in case of bending stress on the screw.
If needed for the application, the DELTA PT
®
screw can be
manufactured with a pilot point. This might be necessary if
the fastening position is not visible for the installer and easy
finding of the insertion hole is required.
Boss design
The maximum clamp load is the criterion for optimal boss
design. The favourable hole diameter is usually at the ratio:

For materials with high filler content or high internal
strength, the optimum hole diameter can be increased up to

Modern fasteners are the basis for economic joint design. The
cost structure of the manufactured product is significantly
influenced by the design engineering.
Generally speaking, the development of a product, which
represents about 10% of the overall costs, determines about
70% of the costs for the end product. The design engineer
has a clear responsibility for the overall costs, and considera-
tions about suitable fastening technology are already neces-
sary during the conception stage. A change of parts in the
production stage causes much higher costs than an optimi-
sation of the joint during the design stage.
To assist our customers in this process EJOT offers support
during the design stage with comprehensive application
engineering services. These services provide accurate infor-
mation on product performance and result in design recom-
mendations that can be used safely on the product line.
Consequent Application Engineering
The daily work with our customers and their application
queries greatly influences our understanding of fastening
technology and opens up possibilities for innovation.This way
we consequently improve our products to meet customer
demands.
In addition to highly-qualified engineers and application engi-
neering consultants our application laboratory, the EJOT®
APPLITEC, is at your disposition. Here we carry out a series
of tests on the customer components and develop new faste-
ning solutions.
Our know-how is passed on to our customers and supports
them in their effort towards more rational fastening and

The advantages with regards to quality, efficiency and assembly - for example due to parts and weight reduction, decreased assembly costs and times as well as component size reductions - have supported its leading role in fastening technology. But the direct assembly reaches its limits with thin-walled components made of various materials, due the low thread engagement. For these application cases EJOT has de- veloped a number of standardised fastening technology solutions that are attuned to the material and the service condition and that withstand high loads in many cases. The EJOT "boss" family, in combination with the DELTA PT® screw, offers the advantage of direct assembly, despite the special demands of thin-walled components. The design and the material of the boss offer additional product advan- tages, such as ease of recycling or automation. The newest "boss" generation with adjustable wall thickness compensation (EASYboss® V) offers additional cost saving potential, due to standardisation and other "intelligent" features.

The injection moulded EASYboss® V made of PA66, can be assembled easy and safe due to the ergonomic form without any sharp edges - and it offers a significant potential for weight reduction. Installation instructions for snap-on thickness range t = 0.8 - 3.0 mm and 2.5 - 5.5 mm (valid for both versions) n edge distance B2 = 9 mm n hole diameter D6 = 7 mm n wall distance E1 = 10 mm Fastening process with DELTA PT® 40 The EASYboss® V has been developed to fasten a posi- tioned clamping part with the EJOT DELTA PT® 40 screw in a process reliable way (for further information about the DELTA PT® see page13). This ideally coordinated system solution ensures a dynamically safe joint. Due to the self-tapping DELTA PT® thread, high self-locking of the "boss" and screw system is guaranteed. The high de- gree of thread engagement of "2x nominal screw diameter" prevents loosening of the joint, even if a loss of clamp load due to relaxation of the material occurs. In addition to easy and problem-free fastening, the inte- grated anti-rotation protection guarantees 10 times repeat assemblies. Technical Data n Material: PA66 heat stabilised n Tightening torque: 1.6 Nm n Screw: EJOT DELTA PT® 40 The EJOT EASYboss® V is a fastening element for assembly with components of varying thickness. The resilient screw boss equalises the clamping thickness and at the same time applies the clamp load for the captive pre-assembly. Dynamically safe fastening element for varying component thicknesses The EASYboss® V is mainly used as a screw boss, subse- quently assembled to components where direct assembly is not possible, either due to a lack of installation depth or due to difficult tool conditions. With the EASYboss® V, unlike other fastening elements, the problem of corrosion is a thing of the past. Operating principle The spring supported boss of the EASYboss® V adjusts to the respective component thickness, and offers application possibilities for varying wall thicknesses. This way the EASYboss® V offers an enormous potential for standardisa- tion and part reduction. In a non-assembled condition the contact pressure, which is due to the opposite spring elements, ensures the firm hold of the EASYboss® V to the component. This also prevents possible falling off of the fastening ele- ment due to vibration, for example during transport. Main fields of application for the EASYboss® are designs where direct assembly is not possi- ble. Reasons for this are insufficient installation depths in the component or other tool related conditions. Further possible uses are in thin-walled components made of various materi- als, for example thin metal sheets. Installation The EASYboss® is assembled just like the EASYboss® V, by snap fitting sideways to the fastening direction from the edge of the part or through an access hole in a flat compo- nent. Tolerances of the hole pattern can be reliably compen- sated by the fastening element. Different sizes are available for various fastening situations. In particular the combination of EJOT DELTA PT® screw and EASYboss® offers ideal prerequisites for the direct assembly into plastic. Numerous sizes For various screw diameters (3.5 mm - 6.0 mm), clamp thickness (1.0 mm - 6.0 mm) and hole spacing (5.0 mm - 15.0 mm) many different standard sizes of the "EASYboss" are available (see pages 8 and 9). To differentiate between the "EASYboss" sizes, they are coloured differently. They can be made from the materials POM, POM XAP, PA (GF) or PP (GF). This fully automated clipping process can be easily integra- ted into the assembly line, e.g. for the serial production of instrument panels. No "catching" of the parts Contrary to metal U-nuts the development and design en- gineering of the EASYboss® and the EASYboss® V has put a special focus on preventing catching of the parts in the feeder bowl. This guarantees trouble-free conveying and feeding of the EASYboss® products at all times during the assembly process. 100% installation control The fully automated assembly also offers the additional advantage of a 100% installation control of the "EASYboss". Main fields of application are surface assemblies that require fastening elements with variable snap-on thicknesses due to varying thicknesses of the substructure. Installation: The "boss" is assembled through pushing in assembly direction into a square hole in the substructure. Manual as well as semi and fully automated assembly is no problem with this special fastening element. Optimum functioning is guaranteed through a combination with the EJOT DELTA PT® screw. Function After installation, the snapping hooks of the VARIOboss® HP return to their initial position. Due to the constant force of the connecting springs they are permanently pressed against the substructure. Fastened with the EJOT DELTA PT® screw the snapping hooks cannot spring back - the result is a strong and very reliable joint. The EJOT® SQUAREboss is particularly suitable for compo- nents with low insertion depth. The outstanding fastening characteristics are even more apparent in combination with the DELTA PT® screw. Installation The EJOT® SQUAREboss can be fixed to the substructure by manually pushing in the assembly direction. Small sheet tolerances can be be compensated and automated assem- bly is possible with this fastening element as well. Function The snapping hooks of the SQUAREboss latch into a square hole and after positioning and fastening of the com- ponent, the hooks are pulled against the substructure. The result is a particularly reliable, dynamically safe joint.

The customer can rely on fast, reliable and target-oriented support and cooperation with EJOT during all stages of the project. Early involvement of the application engineers in the com- ponent development is the key to project success, since any necessary design changes to the geometry of the faste- ning point are still possible in an early stage of the project. Focus on customer benefits In a development partnership with EJOT the customer benefits from the innovative calculation programme for fastening elements from the EJOT "boss" family. For exam- ple the torque curve during fastening of the "boss" can be determined in an early phase of the development with the prognosis programme DELTA CALC. Design modifications can be implemented right away if necessary. Expert partner companies are available for the the pro- duction of laser sintered sample parts. Samples and serial production tools can also be manufactured in our own tooling department. This guarantees short delivery times for customer requests and a fast processing of the projects. The product features of the EJOT DELTA PT ® screw are the result of long-term practical experience in the direct assem- bly of thermoplastics. A research programme based on the mechanical parame- ters of many thousands of applications and test assemblies, has proven that reliable clamp load calculations are also possible for thermoplastic material (compare to VDI 2230). Parallel to this a prognosis programme for the joint design and for the new geometry of the EJOT DELTA PT ® screw has been developed. The result is a robust and modern fa- stener that provides reliability even in extreme applications. Combination with the "boss" family These developments are also utilised in the combination of the DELTA PT ® screw with the products from the "boss" family. With the possibility of pre-dimensioning with DELTA CALC, the required clamp load can be adjusted accordingly. The large core cross section offers a high degree of safety in case of bending stress on the screw. If needed for the application, the DELTA PT ® screw can be manufactured with a pilot point. This might be necessary if the fastening position is not visible for the installer and easy finding of the insertion hole is required. Boss design The maximum clamp load is the criterion for optimal boss design. The favourable hole diameter is usually at the ratio: db = 0.8 x d1 ± screw diameter tolerance (also see tolerances DELTA PT® brochure, page 16) For materials with high filler content or high internal strength, the optimum hole diameter can be increased up to db = 0.88 x d1.

The cost structure of the manufactured product is significantly influenced by the design engineering. Generally speaking, the development of a product, which represents about 10% of the overall costs, determines about 70% of the costs for the end product. The design engineer has a clear responsibility for the overall costs, and considera- tions about suitable fastening technology are already neces- sary during the conception stage. A change of parts in the production stage causes much higher costs than an optimi- sation of the joint during the design stage.
