You might well wonder what “intelligent” software engineering is. The Britannica Dictionary defines the word “intelligent”: as: “having or showing the ability to easily learn or understand things or to deal with new or difficult situations”. Software Engineering is a specialised discipline, and can be done well or badly. So too, leadership. And so too, software engineering leadership.
In this talk, Theresa Neate will discuss how to intelligently lead Software Engineering. And also what that synergy and symbiosis with its partners Product and Design looks like: where engineering is adaptive, resilient and above all co-leads mutual success in building products that customers love.

18. The Mini CEO
analogy
“The role I would argue that the
product manager is most
similar to is the role of the
CEO. But with the obvious
difference that unlike the CEO,
nobody reports to the product
manager.”

19. The Mini CEO
analogy - criticism
“I don’t disagree with the main
criticism of the metaphor, which is
that it may give license to the product
manager to think of themselves and
act like the boss, because I also know
some product managers that
misinterpreted this concept and were
awful people to work with.”

21. Delivery teams
AKA Dev Teams
o Developer focused
o Other disciplines usually still in a silo
o Projects not Products
o Agile at Scale or “Transformations”
o Product Owner usually a “backlog

o Usually following Scrum
o Cross-functional
o Focus is on features, not products
o Focus is on output, not outcome
o Quarterly or annual planning
o Roadmaps

product teams
o Cross-functional
o Focus on outcome
o Willingness to experiment
o Lean principles (e.g. fast feedback)
o Highly innovative
o Product Manager is empowered to
solve the problem for viability
o Design plays an integral role in
usability

with Product
o Understand and appreciate the
complexity of Product Management
o Have coffee, drinks, meals, brainstorms
o Learn to negotiate a win-win (“Getting
