2. Technical talk about Promethean’s technology and capabilities already presented by Ed Lester,
our Technical Director
Promethean design, develop and manufacture inorganic nanomaterial dispersions
Use Continuous-flow hydrothermal and solvothermal synthesis
Promethean Particles
3. Infinity Series - 1,000+ tons/yr
The world’s largest continuous multi-nanomaterial manufacturing plant
4. • Manufacture nanoparticles in liquid dispersion, not dry powders
• Work with our customers to adapt the downstream processing so that nanomaterials are not
handled in dry powder form
• Greatly reduced inhalation risks; easier to contain nanomaterials
• One approach is to reduce risk by reducing exposure
• Also consider ways to reduce hazard through collaborative projects…
A Safe-by-Design Manufacturing Approach
Risk = Hazard x Exposure
5. • Hand-in-hand with our innovation
• Strong involvement in collaborative European Projects focussing on Nano Safety:
• NanoMILE (FP7): Engineered nanomaterial mechanisms of interactions with living systems
and the environment
• NanoFASE (H2020): Nanomaterial Fate and Speciation in the Environment
• Involved in other European projects which have Tasks specifically addressing Nano Safety:
• Cell3Ditor (H2020): development of a 3D printing technology to produce Solid Oxide Fuel Cell
(SOFC) stacks
• CARMOF (H2020): tailor made 3D printed structures based on CNTs and MOFs for efficient
CO2 capture
Nano Safety is Promethean’s Priority

The Guardian
Nano Safety in the Media
• Data obtained from animal studies
• Different animals respond differently from each other and from
humans
• Should consider Occupational Health data from
workers/manufacturers?
7. GBP Consulting Ltd
1. Nanomaterials are not the next asbestos
2. Particle toxicity appears primarily predictable based on composition and,
for inhalation, persistence and shape
3. To date a uniquely “nano” mechanism for toxicity has not been
established
4. Natural and incidental nanomaterials predominate from an exposure
perspective
5. If regulation is to be applied, base on material function rather than size
