3. Summary vs. Analysis
What is a summary?
• A summary is a generic description of a story
or movie that is already thought out in your
mind.
What is a literary analysis?
• An investigation of the deeper meaning in a
specific piece of writing or story.
4. Summary
If asked to create a summary of the Little
Mermaid, I’d say..
• A mermaid named Ariel, who’s father is king of the sea, is too adventurous for her
own good. She disobeys her father and swims to the surface of the ocean and
spots a handsome man named Eric. She wants to be with him and the only way
possible is to become human herself. Ariel meets the witch of the sea that tricks
her into taking a dangerous potion that steals her voice. Eric falls in love with her
and saves her from the witch and they lived happily ever after.
5. Analysis
If I was asked to create a literary analysis of the
Little Mermaid, I’d say..
• Ariel and Eric are familiarized with Romeo and Juliet. Numerous things are
keeping them apart, including Ariel’s father. Juliet’s father wanted her nowhere
near Romeo. The two sets of lovers find a way to be together.. Etc.
