2. PROBLEMATIC
• The notion of formulaicity and culture-bound utterances
• Different types of formulaic sequences
• The process of interpretation and understanding
• The representativeness of prefabs in our courses
3. OBJECTIVES
• Draw learners’ attention towards the notion of formulaicity and whatever positive
aspects it brings to their EFL learning process
• Investigate the importance of formulaic sequences in reaching fluency and
acculturation in adopting a native-like competence
4. METHODOLOGY
• 15 Master one students (volunteers) – English Division – Biskra University –
• Pre-Test / Post-Test
• An « intervention » instructional period of Six Sessions
• A comparative study between the results of both tests
• Using paired t-test results as statistical proof
6. RESULTS
• Learners show more interest in learning such expressions
• They are interested in the challenge of deriving accurate meanings of formulaic and
culture-bound utterances (positive attitude)
• Prefabricated chunks of language are easier to process, memorize, and retrieve as
wholes from memory at the time of use (less processing)
• They require less effort in generating lexical items
• Situation and culture bound utterances help learners reach fluency, be
communicatively competent, and avoid any breakdown of communication
7. PEDAGOGICAL IMPLICATIONS
• Formulaic sequences and culture bound utterances in particular need more space in
EFL learners’ daily use of the language
• Teachers need to include more of such sequences to help learners get used to the
grammatical and the lexical irregularity
• EFL learners need more exposure to native speech preferably movies and TV shows
• In and out of class practice of any learnt expression
