The report contains the results of the 2006 fieldwork and the following analytical
studies of the collected samples including U-Pb detrital zircon (14 sampl.) and Ar-Ar (9
sampl.) geochronology, whole-rock Sm-Nd isotopic (17 sampl.) and chemical (23 sampl.)
studies, stable isotopes (40 sampl.), heavy minerals composition (13 sampl.), XRD clay
minerals (40 sampl.), apatite fission track (8 sampl.), vitrinite reflection (11 sampl.),
Rock-Eval studies (23 sampl.), and description of 150 thin sections (see Fig. 1 for
location of the visited sites). The project was designed to shed more light on:
ƒƒ Structural relationship between New Siberian-Chukchi Fold Belt, and North and South
Chukchi basins;
ƒƒ Main uplift/cooling/erosion pulses;
ƒƒ Paleozoic and Mesozoic hydrocarbon systems;
ƒƒ Paleogeographic restorations and the main sediment supply pathways
The report begins with characterization of Wrangel Island tectonic setting, and
description of the studied tectono-stratigraphic units.
Main emphasizes is given to structural characteristics of Paleozoic and Triassic TSU,
and to new data from conodont stratigraphy. The following chapters summarize and
interpret new data on bulk rock geochemistry, mineralogy, Sm-Nd and Ar-Ar isotopic
composition, U-Pb detrital zircon chronostratigraphy, δO and δC in carbonate rocks, X-Ray
diffraction of clay minerals; Rock-Eval data on source rock TOC and maturity.
New results allowed for:
ƒƒ distinguishing tectonic events and transregional correlation;
ƒƒ more accurate definition of stratigraphic age of some sedimentary successions;
ƒƒ characterization of paleogeography and sources of clastic material.
Important results were obtained in characterizing the hydrocarbon systems of Wrangel
Island which can be used as a proxy for the North Chukchi Basin petroleum evaluation.

WRANGEL ISLAND REPORT
TGS | WRANGEL ISLAND REPORT 2013
Introduction
Wrangel Island is located between the East Siberian and Chukchi seas 140 km away
from the Chukotka Peninsula from which it is separated by Longa Strait (Fig. 1). It is 150
km long in WE direction and 80 km wide in N-S direction, and is about 7300 km2 in size.
Due to its position, island represents a key area for understanding geology of the East
Siberian and Chukchi seas and for reconstructing the eastern Arctic tectonic history.
The report represents a summary of geological and analytical studies carried out from
January to December 2011 with total duration close to 11 mounts. Three members of
the project team, S.D. Sokolov, M.I. Tuchkova, and V.E. Verzhbitsky, were involved into
fieldwork carried out on Wrangel Island by International Russian-American-Swedish
Geological Expedition in 2006.
Therefore the report is mainly based on 2006 fieldwork results carried out in the central,
western and southern parts of island. Many analytical data provided in this report have
never been published before, and are not a public domain data. The overall supervising
of the analytical work was done by A. Khudoley.
