 Definition of Subjunctive
The subjunctive in English is the simple form of the verb when used after
certain verbs indicating that one person wants another person to do something.
The word that must always appear in subjunctive sentence. If it is omitted, most of
verb are followed by the infinitive. (Cliffs : 2005)
e.g :
We urge that zaki leave now.
We urge him to leave now.
Function of Subjunctive :
The form of a verb that is used to state an expectation happens or declare
a non-confomity with reality , and also to state suggestion. (Top Grammar : 2017)
1. Function of Subjunctive to state suggestion / request :
Study the following list of verbs.
Note : the verb want itself is not one these verbs.
In the following rule, verb indicates one of the above verbs :
Subject + verb + that + subject + {verb in simple form} ..
(any tense)
e.g :
Maya suggested that Aziz stop smoking.
IAIN Salatiga requires that all students wear white shirt.
The lecture proposed that he take assignment.
advice Demand Prefer require
ask Insist propose stipulate
command move recommend suggest
Decree Order request urge
The simple form of the verb is also used after impersonal expressions with the same
meaning as the above verbs.
The adjective that fit into formula include the following :
In the following rule, adjective indicates one of the above adjectives.
It + be + adjective + that + subject + {verb in simple form} ...

e.g :

Kinds of Conditional Subjunctive :
1. Present Subjunctive
Serves to express the presupositions or expectations of events or
circumstances that are inconsistent with current realities.
 Wish
S1 + wish/wished + (that) + S2 + Simple Past
e.g :
Fara wishes (that) she had a car.
I wish Faizal weren’t so horrible to me.
 Would rather
S1 + would rather + S2 + Simple Past
e.g :
Lentri wants to tell Iqbal, but I’d rather she didn’t (tell him).
I’d rather you didn’t open that window. I’m cold.
 As if / As though
S1 + V1/V2 + as if/as though + S2 + Simple Past
e.g :
Sasha behaves as if she owned the place.
Aziz acted as though she were mad.
 If only
If only + S + Simple Past!
e.g :
If only we knew Herlina’s address!
If only I were better-looking!

serves to express the presuppotions or expectations of events or
circumstances that are inconsistent with the reality of the past.
 Wish
S1 + wish/wished + (that) + S2 + Past Perfect
e.g :
Oh I’m tired. I wish (that) I’d gone to bed earlier last night.
I feel sick. I wish I hadn’t eaten so much chocolate cake.
 Would rather :
S1+ Would rather + S2 + Past Perfect.
e.g :
I’d rather Sila hadn’t borrowed my car.
I’d rather you hadn’t told anyone what said.
 As if / As though :
S1 + V1/V2 + As if / As though + S2 + Past Perfect.
e.g :
Zacky looks as though he had’nt had a decent meal for a month.
She spoke as though he had known all about our plans.
 If only
If only + S2 + Past Perfect!

  • 5.  Definition of Subjunctive The subjunctive in English is the simple form of the verb when used after certain verbs indicating that one person wants another person to do something. The word that must always appear in subjunctive sentence. If it is omitted, most of verb are followed by the infinitive. (Cliffs : 2005) e.g : We urge that zaki leave now. We urge him to leave now. Function of Subjunctive : The form of a verb that is used to state an expectation happens or declare a non-confomity with reality , and also to state suggestion. (Top Grammar : 2017)
  • 6. 1. Function of Subjunctive to state suggestion / request : Study the following list of verbs. Note : the verb want itself is not one these verbs. In the following rule, verb indicates one of the above verbs : Subject + verb + that + subject + {verb in simple form} .. (any tense) e.g : Maya suggested that Aziz stop smoking. Present Subjunctive Serves to express the presupositions or expectations of events or circumstances that are inconsistent with current realities.  Wish S1 + wish/wished + (that) + S2 + Simple Past e.g : Fara wishes (that) she had a car. I wish Faizal weren’t so horrible to me.  Would rather S1 + would rather + S2 + Simple Past e.g : Lentri wants to tell Iqbal, but I’d rather she didn’t (tell him). I’d rather you didn’t open that window. I’m cold.
  • 9.  As if / As though S1 + V1/V2 + as if/as though + S2 + Simple Past e.g : Sasha behaves as if she owned the place. Aziz acted as though she were mad.  If only If only + S + Simple Past! e.g : If only we knew Herlina’s address! If only I were better-looking!

I wish I hadn’t eaten so much chocolate cake.  Would rather : S1+ Would rather + S2 + Past Perfect. e.g : I’d rather Sila hadn’t borrowed my car. I’d rather you hadn’t told anyone what said.
