Introduction
 A discovery product consists of an interface directed toward the users
of a library to find materials in its collections and subsequently to gain
access to items of interest through the exact mechanisms.
 Independent from the specific applications that libraries implement to
manage resources, such as integrated library systems, library services
platforms, repository platforms, or electronic resource management
systems
 Provide an interface with search and retrieval capabilities, often with
features such as relevancy-based ordering of search results, facets
presented that can be selected to narrow results according to specific
categories, contributors, or date ranges, and tools to identify related
materials or to refine search queries
Review Of Literature
 Fagan, Jody Condit. , Mandernach ,Meris, Nelson, Carl S. , Paulo, Jonathan R.and
Saunders, Grover(2012) in this study ‘‘Usability Test Results for a Discovery Tool
in an Academic Library”
 Calvert .Kristin,(2015) ‘‘Maximizing Academic Library Collections: Measuring
Changes in Use Patterns Owing to EBSCO Discovery Service” The present study
posits three effects of web-scale discovery on library resource usage: (1) EDS
will result in increased use of the library’s e-resources; (2) EDS will result in
increased use of the library’s print collection; and (3) EDS will result in
decreased use of interlibrary loan for materials.
 Ciccone. Karen, and Vickery. John,( 2015) ‘‘Summon, EBSCO Discovery Service,
and Google Scholar: A Comparison of Search Performance Using User Queries” .
In this study to evaluate the comparison of search performance between web-
scale discovery services: ProQuest’s Summon and EBSCO Discovery Service
(EDS).
Conti……..
 Vastrad , Bharathy, and Dharani Kumar ( 2017) “Federated Search
and Discovery Tools” in this study consult with how the user find
resources across library collection with the help of federated search.
 Ciccone,(2015) Evidence “Summon, EBSCO Discovery Service, and
Google Scholar: A Comparison of Search Performance Using User
Queries ” A study was conducted to compare the search
performance of two web-scale discovery services: ProQuest’s
Summon and EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS).
 Smith(2012) “Evaluation and Implementation of a Discovery Tool” The
buzz in campus libraries is "Discovery Tools" -- how they work and
how our patrons use them. But first, a library needs to evaluate and
implement the discovery product.
Concept of Discovery Service Tool
A Discovery tool provides a single point of access to a
range of library resources that enables users to search
multiple resources with a single search.
Discovery services are becoming the window to the world
of our library resources
Next generation catalog: search catalog, search repository
data bases, real time information, support for search
strategies , support bookmarking, tagging, one place to
search
Evolution Of Discovery Service Tool
 Library users are too often frustrated by the disjointed
array of databases, services, catalogue, and publisher Web
sites that confront them when they seek information.
 they are unclear exactly what the catalogue covers;
they find federated searching to be useful but also slow
and duplicative; and they want a convenient starting point
for library resources of all kinds.
Major Types Discovery Service Tool
Some of Commercial and Open Source Software are mentioned
Advantages And Disadvantages
Objective Of The Study
 To find out the differences between open source and commercial software
 To know the various platform of Discovery service tools
 To find out the best DST for Libraries.
Scope and Methodology Of The Study
 The study only in the library circumstances, between a few popular open
sources and commercial Discovery service tools such as in open source
VuFind and Blacklight another one in a commercial EBSCO Discovery
Service (EDS), and Summon with their different parameter.
 The Methodology of the study, information will collected by visiting the
official websites of related DST and follow many journal articles tofulfill
the objective of this study. The comparison of the study will carry their
different parameters
Comparison Between Open Source And
Commercial Discovery Service Tool
The comparison study of DST in various parameter,
Response time, Licence, Price, Technology Support,
Indexing/Tagging, Customization, Searching ability,
Search engine, Updates, Hardware, Software,
Operating system, Browser, Add on service,
Suggestions, Support Service, Platform
Major Findings Of The Study
After a careful analysis and gone through the major difference between the
commercial and open source discovery services, the following major findings were
noted:
Technology support: in commercial provide by Service Provider, in other hand open
source enable of OpenURL/Z39.88 OAI-PMH, Troubleshoot.
Indexing/Tagging: Subject Indexing is service of commercial, and rest are the as
same as open source.
Searching ability: The extra feature of commercial DST are Relevancy Ranking
Superior, Limiters and Expanders, Book Jacket Images And Publication, Easily Refined
Results Unified Index of Content, in other hand these services are not available in
open source.
Conti……..
Search engine: the search engine of commercial software has provided by the
service provider, other hand open source has Solr Energy/Apache, and Ruby
Docs for information retrieve.
Hardware: Hardware for DST of commercial software has provided by the
service provider and other hand open source has need of 2GB RAM, More Then
1GB.
Software: - Software for DST commercial software has provided by the service
provider and other hand open source has need Apache HTTP Server, Java JDK,
My SQL, PHP.
Operating system: - For the commercial tools, The service provider provide
there services through IP. Other hand open source recommend Linux and Fedora
for enabling DST in libraries.
Cont……..
Browser:-In commercial tools DST are compatibility all browser and the Internet
Explorer is the recommended by open sources.
Suggestions: Similar suggestion and Hyperlink provide in Commercial tools but in
open source only similar suggestion is available.
Support Service:- in the context of support service all service provided by
commercial tools but in open source there is only Collaborative Service and Mailing
List provide
Mobile Apps: Here is the most effective and platform of providing service for
discovery of information form a system. The mobile app service provide by both
commercial EBSCO and Summon but in other hand there is only one Open VAS open
sources software has provide mobile app service.
Conclusion
Discovery service have added many new feature that help user retrieve
information faster and of better quality than ever before in a very simple
search mechanism. This is great for the typical user who just wants an
answer quick and does not want in-depth materials. Overall, discovery
services are an exciting advance in the way that people traditionally
searched.
