To Whom It May Concern:
I have had the pleasure of knowing and working with Susan Scanland since early
2014, when we began discussing her role as a clinician in rural nursing home
telepsychiatry. As a fellowship trained and board-certified adult and geriatric
psychiatrist, I have spent most of my career as a long term care psychiatrist, with
roles including Chief Medical Officer for the largest provider of behavioral health
services to long-term care facilities in six states, as well as Assistant Clinical
Professor of Psychiatry at Brown University. I am currently Chief Medical Officer
for Forefront TeleCare, one of the country’s largest providers of behavioral
telehealth services to rural nursing facilities.
Susan has the unique ability to combine the highest level of professional integrity
and competence with a down-to-earth interpersonal style that resonates with the
people she interacts with. In addition to providing excellent clinical care to the
residents she is asked to treat, she excels at being an educator and critical
thinker as she attempts to raise the bar for quality dementia care in nursing
homes. As her collaborating physician I have personally observed Susan’s
clinical abilities, and have extremely high confidence in her ability to work
effectively in a multidisciplinary setting
Susan is chairing a presentation on nursing home telepsychiatry at the upcoming
2016 Annual Meeting of the American Association of Geriatric Psychiatry. I am
the co-presenter for the program, and I have greatly admired Susan’s ability to
put together a high-level presentation that does justice to the important role of
telepsychiatry in delivering dementia care to rural nursing facilities.
