The adolescence needs may be conveniently
divided in to two

Primary or Physiological Needs
Primary needs are physiological in origin and
their fulfillment is inevitable because they are
concerned with the existence of the individual.
They include bare necessities of life such as
• Need for oxygen
• Need for water and food
• Need for rest and sleep
• Need for sex

Secondary Needs or Socio-
psychological Needs
• Need for security – The adolescent need
emotional, social and economic security in
addition to physical security. The person who
lacks the feeling of security may become
maladjusted.

• Need for love – Adolescents have a strong
desire to love and to be loved. The individual
who is not loved will not develop proper attitudes
and concepts concerning his own worth.
• Need for recognition and approval – The
adolescent desires that he should be a centre of
attraction for the opposite sex and his abilities,
intelligence and capacities should be recognized
by others.

• Need for achievement – He experiences
satisfaction when he succeed in them; and
failure makes him depressed and disappointed.
• Need for freedom and independence –
Adolescence is a time when the individual is
striving to wean himself away from the control of
parents and elders. He feels annoyed and
unpleasant when restriction is imposed on him.

• Need for self-expression – An adolescent may
have a poet, musician or painter hidden within
him and he wants to get adequate opportunities
for the expression of his potentialities.
