 Properties of ceramics
1. High Thermal Resistance.
2. Good Wear And Abrasive Resistance.
3. Good Surface Finish.
4. Good Hardness As Compared To Polymer And
Composites.
Classification of ceramics:
A. CLASSIFICATION BASED ON
 1)Production method
 A)NATURAL CERAMICS: (eg. Silica, sio2, silicates, clay products)
 B)MANUFACTURED CERAMICS: ( eg. Al2o2, borides, carbides, nitrides)
 2)Based on applications
 A)ABRASIVE: (SiC,Al2O3, emery)
 B)FIRED-CLAY PRODUCTs
 C)GLASSES: ( eg. silica, borosilicate's, fiber glasses)
 D)CEMENT
 E)ROCKS
 F)REFRACTORIES: (eg. Silica)
 G)INSULATORS: (eg. Asbestos, fiberglass)
3) Classification based on structural arrangement:
 A) CRYSTALLINE CERAMICS: (eg. Mgo, Al2O3)
 b) non-crystalline ceramics: (eg. Window glasses)
Engineering ceramics:
Properties
 High thermal conductivity
 Wear and corrosion resistant
 High strength and stiffness
 Chemical and thermal stability
 Very good electrical insulation
 High hardness
 Low density (3.75 to 3.95)
 Resist Strong acid & alkali at elevated temperature
1)Alumina
Applications :
1)Filler
It is used as a filler for plastics and also a common in
ingredient in cosmetics such as Lipsticks and Nailpolish.
2)Catalysis
Alumina is the catalyst in the Claus process for converting
hydrogen sulphide waste gases into elemental sulphur in refineries .
3) Purification
Alumina is widely used to remove water from gas stream
4)Paint
It is used paints for reflective Decorative effects
as in automotive or cosmetic industries
5)Composite fibres
Alumina used in commercial fibre material for
high performance applications
2)zirconia:
PROPERTIES:
 higher strength
 fracture toughness than alumina
 great heat insulation
 thermal conductivity is less than 1/10 that of other ceramics.
 high hardness and wear resistance.
 high temperature capability up to 2,400ºC
APPLICATIONS:
1) knives and scissors
IT IS USED IN KNIVES AND SCISSORS IS BACAUSE OF ZIRCONIA IS
SIGNIFICANTLY HARDER THAN STEEL.
 CROWNING OF TEETHS:
Zirconium oxide is also used in dentistry for the
crowning of teeth because of its biocompatibility,
strength and appearance.
SILICON CARBIDE:
PROPERTIES:
• Hardness
• Mechanical strength
• Variable electrical resistivity
• High Purity: due to use of chemical vapor deposition (CVD) to produce ultra-pure ceramic parts
coatings.
APPLICATIONS:
1) Black silicon carbide:
Due to brittleness & sharpness BSC used to make grinding wheels and sandpaper are suitable for
grinding the metallic and nonmetallic materials having low tensile strength such as gray cast iron ,
aluminum, stone, leather & rubber etc.
• Green Silicon carbide:
 GSC suitable for manufacturing grinding tools of cemented carbide, titanium alloy, high speed
steel.it can also be used for polishing nonmetallic material such as glass ,ceramics.
 silicon carbide materials exhibits good erosion and abrasive resistance, these properties can be
utilized in a variety of application such as,
1) Spray Nozzle
2) Shot blast nozzle
3) & cyclone components
SPRAY NOZZLES:
Sisic desulphating spray nozzle consist of mainly two series including more than ten varieties. They
have been used as desulphating equipment in many fuel power plants and big boiler.
The sisic desulphating spray nozzle have long life application and filled that gap in domestic
technologies
Which replace the important parts.
Conclusion:
Thankyou……
