tourism, demonstrating positive
social impacts. These might

and heritage; strengthening
communities; provision of social
services; commercialization of culture
and art
Physical and Environmental
Tourism can cause the same forms of
pollution as any other industry: air
emissions, noise, solid waste and
littering, releases of sewage, oil and
chemicals, even architectural/visual
pollution.
Economic
The economic effects of tourism
include improved tax revenue and
personal income, increased standards
of living, and more employment
opportunities
Cultural
Most of the common positive impacts
of tourism on culture
include increasing cross cultural
interaction; understanding,
maintaining and keeping local culture,
arts, crafts and traditions;
empowering host communities; and
strengthening cultural values.

7. positive and negative impacts of tourism
Positive Negative

year) and are poorly paid

Most money goes out of the area to big
companies, not locals
Local traditions and customs are kept alive
because tourists enjoy traditional shows, e.g.
Flamenco dancing
Culture and traditions change as outsiders arrive
Money from tourists can be used to protect the
natural landscape
Damage to the natural environment, e.g. footpath
erosion (the wearing away of footpaths), litter,
habitats destroyed to build hotels
New facilities for the tourists also benefit locals,
eg new roads

Greater demand for local food and crafts
Prices increase in local shops as tourists are
often more wealthy than the local population
