UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS STUDENTS’ ASSEMBLY (U.S.A) ACADEMIC SESSION REPORT 2014/2015

INTRODUCTION/OVERVIEW
The 2014/2015 academic session began with a lot of prospects and perceived expectations, UNILAG
Students’ Assembly (U.S.A) transcended to its secondary stage, having proclaimed its societal purpose
and goodwill ambitions to the general public in 2013/2014 academic session, the founding year.
Proceeding to the secondary stage was indeed crucial as it necessitated an institutionalizing plan, well
dished to grow, nourish and strengthen the societal movement with a firm structure via a “calendar like”
project activity plan which was ultimately proposed to the dean of students’ affairs as U.S.A ‘14/15
PROJECT CALENDER. Fulfillment of the proposed project were pursued accordingly.
Availability of funds was indeed a limiting factor during the session, soughting for sponsorship caused
numerous delays in decision making and planning coupled with the busy schedule of students resulting
to non availability of members at different points in time.
Updating the list of U.S.A executives for the ‘14/15 academic session, initially posed a threat to the
assembly’s continuity, this and other challenges were expected and handled with a herculean strategy
which payed back profitably via recorded achievements as a students’ society operating in UNILAG.
The delivery of career empowerment packages to students in response to ‘13/14 students’ career
census U.S.A project was a top priority. Other notable projects proposed in the calendar were “dress
well campaign project”, “students voting guide” and “class governors’ forum/committee”.
The resuscitation of the long suspended University of Lagos students’ union (ULSU), during the session
signaled some relief to the our societal cause, but possible collaborations were not realized.
Below are pictures of random U.S.A members at meetings: (img 4)

DELIVERY OF CAREER CENSUS RESPONSE PACKAGES (in response to conducted students
career census U.S.A ‘13/14 project) please refer to ‘13/14 u.s.a report for prior details on career census u.s.a project.
*RESPONSE TO THE CAREER AMBITIONS
*DELIVERY OF AGRIC EMPOWERMENT PACKAGES
Response to the census of students’ career ambitions started with the development of U.S.A website
{www.studentsassembly.com} at the very beginning of the session. The census results and basic
information about U.S.A were prepared for upload on website meant to serve as a platform whereby
students of similar career ambitions are registered and connected to interact and receive empowerment
tips/guides that we deliver as "career census response package".
The site was developed {courtesy of edawah technologies} to meet basic public inquisition needs while
the registering of students for the response package was put on pending due to its unaffordable
maintenance fee and minute progress on sponsorship.
U.S.A blackberry messenger channel {C0020206F} was created as an improvised means to provide
students with general empowerment tips and update. A special career census response blog was also
created to expose, orient and train enrolled students accordingly on weekly basis.
The truth technologies enterprise is the information technology brand whose service was employed to
facilitate the delivery of the above stated response package (view image 5 below) . General progress was
however averagely achieved due to cost related factors.

(Img 5) U.S.A / Truth tech :
Delivery of agric empowerment package in response to career census research project started with the
publicity of students’ percentage interest in agriculture as portrayed by the census result. Judging by the
total of 3455 respondents (enrolled students), students’ interest (aspiration to farm) can be summarized
as the following: “yes”= 768(22%), “no”=752(22%), “willing”=1509(44%) while the remaining 12% gave
no response. The total of 66% (yes + willing) was significant enough to pursue adequate response via
enlightenment as the agric empowerment response package.
The delivery of agric empowerment response package was planned for second semester. It started via
exposure, notifying concerned individuals and certain private companies like Dangote and Bank of
Industry about the acquired result information.
Agric enlightenment in response to the percentage students’ interest in agriculture as stated above, was
well pursued and will remain on going .The University of Lagos students' affairs division acknowledged
our efforts to this effect.

U.S.A is currently working with gourmetguide234 (www.gourmetguide234.com) to bring about agric
enlightenment via seminars, radio talks and networking in the benefit of the students.

General progress on the delivery of career census response packages can be said to be progressing. The
enrolled students (100&200 level students of ‘13/14 session) would be in 300&400 level respectively in
‘15/16 session, giving us more time to explore other ways of responding to the students’ career
ambitions and interest in agric.

DRESSWELL PROJECT
Dress well project is an awareness movement to check and reduce the possibilities of indecent dressings
on campus (to lectures) as soon as students stop coming from home when hostels begin to fully
accommodate them. The need for this awareness project grew out of the observed dressing trends on
campus, more noticed among female students.
The aim is to promote a suitable learning environment for the generality of students to be freed from
appearance related distractions.
A committee of female U.S.A members (F.U.S.A) was created and set to manage the dress well project.
Partnership was proposed with the university counseling unit and the two operating students’ religion
bodies (Muslim students society of Nigeria _M.S.S.N and UNILAG Joint Christian Fellowship _U.J.C.F)
while soughting out for sponsorship was going on.
A week long awareness movement was planned and the proposed activity ordering was as follows:
Day one: Campaign walk for U.S.A members and friends, from senate building to gate.
Day two: A major event to debate dressing issues/matters and relationship with career building.
Day three: Interactions with random students on campus.
Day four: Rounding up general publicity, intensifying social media outreach to students, sharing
handbills and pasting stickers.
PROGRESS WITH PROJECT DRESS WELL
Project dress well awareness was successful as massive awareness was created through prints, social
media and interactions with random students. Stickers were pasted in all faculties and hostels at Akoka
campus. Students were given cards during the random interactions, passing the message “always dress
well” boldly printed on them.
The University Counseling Unit endorsed the project, as a way of supporting the campaign. Judging by
the wide coverage the awareness project made, one can affirm its significant achievement, although the
proposed event and campaign walk did not hold due to cost related constraint, while MSSN relatively
showed interest in promoting the message being passed.
The F.U.S.A committee was dissolved before the project was even executed. Its members can be said to
have under-performed to expectations, due to constraints imposed by proper coordination, availability
and finance. It also included some male key executives.

VOTING GUIDE
As a students’ society operating on campus ensuring that students are conscious of the political
movement relating to them as citizens or indigenes; is of utmost concern to the assembly. Among the
established constitutional objectives is to work with the school, students’ or non students’ bodies on
common matters relating to the students for better learning conditions. We took it upon ourselves to
ensure students are more conscious of students’ friendly politicians who have favorable agendas for the
education sector.
As observed in the U.S.A project calendar above, we proposed the sending of bulk text messages to
students encouraging them to participate in the 2015 national elections. The election dates were
postponed (national election from feb. 14th
to march 28th
, while state election from feb.28th
to April
11th
). The messages were eventually not sent as massive enlightenment by the government and several
media bodies were already circulating due to the new voting technique the government introduced
which enjoyed ground shaking publicity and acknowledgment.
The assembly also took the responsibility of approaching the major political parties( All Progressive
Congress_ A.P.C and Peoples Democratic Party_ P.D.P ) governorship aspirants to acquiring about those
plans they have for students/youth empowerment. The assembly met with Mr. Tobi (07010440904) the
P.D.P students” campaign coordinator at the party secretariat, Onipan, Lagos State. The assembly also
met Mr. Michael “holy Mike” (08084408900) the A.P.C campaign manager at his office; 106, St.finbarrs
road, Akoka, Lagos state.
Yaba College of Technology ‘14/15 students’ union president (Salvador 07081676568) and the federal
college of education students’ union president (Bolumade 07062834063) were met and encouraged by
the assembly to present their needs to these political aspirants.
RE-RUN OF CAREER CENSUS U.S.A PROJECT
Enumeration of the newly admitted students (‘14/15 academic session) for career census U.S.A project
was proposed in the project calendar. Sole sponsorship of the re-run was requested from Mara mentor
foundation; no financial commitments were achieved and as a result lead to its postponement to ‘15/16
academic session.

ALL CLASS GOVERNORS FORUM
University of Lagos students’ assembly (U.S.A) invited all class governors of 100, 200 & 300 level
students to a capacity building seminar tagged “all class governors’ forum”. It empowered them in the
following aspects; acquisition of mentorship skills, identifying and building potentials, exhibiting
leadership abilities, developing better communication skills, students’ constitutional awareness and the
aspect of promoting lecturer-students’ relationship.

The primary aim of U.S.A for the forum is to impact the class governors
and train them to extend the impact to their followers, the class
members and the president of “the Speakers club” UNILAG chapter, was
invited to do justice accordingly. The president gave the governors basic
tips for effective communication with class members as leaders that
they are.

The Clerk of ULSU parliament was invited to enlighten and interact with
class governors on constitutional rules guiding students. Although the
clerk and his house members could not make it, due to understandable
reasons, an ULSU member (at picture) who is also a class governor
volunteered to guide the audience on certain rules.
Event Supporters
The assembly hereby acknowledges the support from class governors and stake holders who
contributed to the success of the forum. It was anchored by Mc Wetindey and Brief.
The following brands supported U.S.A at various capacities for the realization of the forum event.

Please Note:
Bookdey.com actually contributed significantly to the class governors’ forum U.S.A project. A brand representative came from
Abuja(Nigeria) to grace the event. sidi osh.com _logo not included_ but exhibited at venue. Sebercly”s brand was included to
support their cancer movement tagged “12LLKP” to hold the same week at national theater (Iganmu, Lagos). Eyemasters
agreed to provide free eye scanning for randomly selected governors at the forum.

OTHER U.S.A SOCIETAL INVOLVEMENTS
 Sharp solution to the university main library cloak room identified problem
The assembly proposed a sharp solution to the problem identified with the bag keeping system of the
school’s main library cloak room, by the introduction of a ‘owners tally’ system which was implemented
immediately. The solution was proposed to bring an end to occurring cases of theft associated with the
cloak room facility of which an assembly member was also a victim. The Laptop containing prepared
database of career census enrolled students to be uploaded on the U.S.A website was lost to the
identified problem; this ignited the students’ urge for a solution which was indeed proposed and
acknowledged for action.
Img.25 (The acknowledgment letter from University of Lagos Main Library Management)
 Participation in the University’s counseling Unit Event.
U.S.A was invited by the university students’ affairs, counseling unit; to participate in their event tagged
“relationship talk” that held on the 9th
July, 2015 at UNILAG main auditorium. The assembly participated
by giving a brief speech and having a dramatic interaction with the audience on dress well models and
perceptions. We were also granted an exhibition space to welcome students at venue.

 Participation in National Career Fair 2015.
The assembly was a proud supporter of national career fair 2015. It is an annual capacity building
program that holds on campus, convened Mr. Seun Shogbamu C.E.O Integral Project Services. Our
integral role was to serve as the UNILAG students’ body for the annual event.
Our proposed contribution towards the success of the event can be highlighted as the following;
# Publicity through handbills distribution.
# Members ambassadorship status with the responsibility of mobilizing students for the event.
# Human resource provision and facilitating the use of the only UNILAG electronic billboard for the
event publicity.

CONCLUSION
Progress is known to be a function of efforts over time of which sacrifice is a multiplying factor. The
assembly hereby gauges progress by accumulated achievements on its projects and impacts to the
students and their society. The inter play of quantified support indices from #team U.S.A members
sustained the movement right from the onset in ‘13/14 academic session to ‘14/15, the just concluded
session.
Having read and possibly graded the success level of U.S.A ‘14/15 projects, observers can indeed
conclude that the assembly is projecting its societal values and ambitions progressively. Project funding
was tasking but the various interactions made with numerous brands/companies can be expected to
bring a good deal in the nearest future.
Conclusion cannot be made without highlighting the non-surprising revolution of mobile kitchen and
food delivery on campus that was wide spread this session. The revolution was already predicted by the
‘13/14 career census results, as cook (profession) was among the top 5 most chosen students career
ambitions. Adequate preparation for such revolution via economic planning and respective capacity
building is the established essence of the commonly talked about career census U.S.A project.
SUPPORT
We hereby call for all possible support from everyone, individuals and brands and bodies convinced or
impressed by the assembly’s genuine societal cause. Let us help continue to make impact.
*please be aware that transactions attributed to the University Of Lagos Students’ Assembly (U.S.A) bank account (Access

  • 6. UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS STUDENTS’ ASSEMBLY (U.S.A) ACADEMIC SESSION REPORT 2014/2015 6 INTRODUCTION/OVERVIEW The 2014/2015 academic session began with a lot of prospects and perceived expectations, UNILAG Students’ Assembly (U.S.A) transcended to its secondary stage, having proclaimed its societal purpose and goodwill ambitions to the general public in 2013/2014 academic session, the founding year. Proceeding to the secondary stage was indeed crucial as it necessitated an institutionalizing plan, well dished to grow, nourish and strengthen the societal movement with a firm structure via a “calendar like” project activity plan which was ultimately proposed to the dean of students’ affairs as U.S.A ‘14/15 PROJECT CALENDER. Fulfillment of the proposed project were pursued accordingly. Availability of funds was indeed a limiting factor during the session, soughting for sponsorship caused numerous delays in decision making and planning coupled with the busy schedule of students resulting to non availability of members at different points in time. Updating the list of U.S.A executives for the ‘14/15 academic session, initially posed a threat to the assembly’s continuity, this and other challenges were expected and handled with a herculean strategy which payed back profitably via recorded achievements as a students’ society operating in UNILAG. The delivery of career empowerment packages to students in response to ‘13/14 students’ career census U.S.A project was a top priority. Other notable projects proposed in the calendar were “dress well campaign project”, “students voting guide” and “class governors’ forum/committee”. The resuscitation of the long suspended University of Lagos students’ union (ULSU), during the session signaled some relief to the our societal cause, but possible collaborations were not realized. Below are pictures of random U.S.A members at meetings: (img 4)
  • 7. UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS STUDENTS’ ASSEMBLY (U.S.A) ACADEMIC SESSION REPORT 2014/2015 7 DELIVERY OF CAREER CENSUS RESPONSE PACKAGES (in response to conducted students career census U.S.A ‘13/14 project) please refer to ‘13/14 u.s.a report for prior details on career census u.s.a project. *RESPONSE TO THE CAREER AMBITIONS *DELIVERY OF AGRIC EMPOWERMENT PACKAGES Response to the census of students’ career ambitions started with the development of U.S.A website {www.studentsassembly.com} at the very beginning of the session. The census results and basic information about U.S.A were prepared for upload on website meant to serve as a platform whereby students of similar career ambitions are registered and connected to interact and receive empowerment tips/guides that we deliver as "career census response package". The site was developed {courtesy of edawah technologies} to meet basic public inquisition needs while the registering of students for the response package was put on pending due to its unaffordable maintenance fee and minute progress on sponsorship. U.S.A blackberry messenger channel {C0020206F} was created as an improvised means to provide students with general empowerment tips and update. A special career census response blog was also created to expose, orient and train enrolled students accordingly on weekly basis. The truth technologies enterprise is the information technology brand whose service was employed to facilitate the delivery of the above stated response package (view image 5 below) . General progress was however averagely achieved due to cost related factors.
  • 8. UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS STUDENTS’ ASSEMBLY (U.S.A) ACADEMIC SESSION REPORT 2014/2015 8 (Img 5) U.S.A / Truth tech : Delivery of agric empowerment package in response to career census research project started with the publicity of students’ percentage interest in agriculture as portrayed by the census result. Judging by the total of 3455 respondents (enrolled students), students’ interest (aspiration to farm) can be summarized as the following: “yes”= 768(22%), “no”=752(22%), “willing”=1509(44%) while the remaining 12% gave no response. The total of 66% (yes + willing) was significant enough to pursue adequate response via enlightenment as the agric empowerment response package. The delivery of agric empowerment response package was planned for second semester. It started via exposure, notifying concerned individuals and certain private companies like Dangote and Bank of Industry about the acquired result information. Agric enlightenment in response to the percentage students’ interest in agriculture as stated above, was well pursued and will remain on going .The University of Lagos students' affairs division acknowledged our efforts to this effect. Img6= dean’s acknowledgement: U.S.A is currently working with gourmetguide234 (www.gourmetguide234.com) to bring about agric enlightenment via seminars, radio talks and networking in the benefit of the students. The enrolled students (100&200 level students of ‘13/14 session) would be in 300&400 level respectively in ‘15/16 session, giving us more time to explore other ways of responding to the students’ career ambitions and interest in agric. • 10. UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS STUDENTS’ ASSEMBLY (U.S.A) ACADEMIC SESSION REPORT 2014/2015 10 DRESSWELL PROJECT Dress well project is an awareness movement to check and reduce the possibilities of indecent dressings on campus (to lectures) as soon as students stop coming from home when hostels begin to fully accommodate them. The need for this awareness project grew out of the observed dressing trends on campus, more noticed among female students. The aim is to promote a suitable learning environment for the generality of students to be freed from appearance related distractions. A committee of female U.S.A members (F.U.S.A) was created and set to manage the dress well project. Partnership was proposed with the university counseling unit and the two operating students’ religion bodies (Muslim students society of Nigeria _M.S.S.N and UNILAG Joint Christian Fellowship _U.J.C.F) while soughting out for sponsorship was going on. A week long awareness movement was planned and the proposed activity ordering was as follows: Day one: Campaign walk for U.S.A members and friends, from senate building to gate. Day two: A major event to debate dressing issues/matters and relationship with career building. Day three: Interactions with random students on campus. Day four: Rounding up general publicity, intensifying social media outreach to students, sharing handbills and pasting stickers. PROGRESS WITH PROJECT DRESS WELL Project dress well awareness was successful as massive awareness was created through prints, social media and interactions with random students. Stickers were pasted in all faculties and hostels at Akoka campus. Students were given cards during the random interactions, passing the message “always dress well” boldly printed on them. The University Counseling Unit endorsed the project, as a way of supporting the campaign. Judging by the wide coverage the awareness project made, one can affirm its significant achievement, although the proposed event and campaign walk did not hold due to cost related constraint, while MSSN relatively showed interest in promoting the message being passed. The F.U.S.A committee was dissolved before the project was even executed. Its members can be said to have under-performed to expectations, due to constraints imposed by proper coordination, availability and finance. It also included some male key executives. • 12. UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS STUDENTS’ ASSEMBLY (U.S.A) ACADEMIC SESSION REPORT 2014/2015 12 VOTING GUIDE As a students’ society operating on campus ensuring that students are conscious of the political movement relating to them as citizens or indigenes; is of utmost concern to the assembly. Among the established constitutional objectives is to work with the school, students’ or non students’ bodies on common matters relating to the students for better learning conditions. We took it upon ourselves to ensure students are more conscious of students’ friendly politicians who have favorable agendas for the education sector. As observed in the U.S.A project calendar above, we proposed the sending of bulk text messages to students encouraging them to participate in the 2015 national elections. The election dates were postponed (national election from feb. 14th to march 28th , while state election from feb.28th to April 11th ). The messages were eventually not sent as massive enlightenment by the government and several media bodies were already circulating due to the new voting technique the government introduced which enjoyed ground shaking publicity and acknowledgment. The assembly also took the responsibility of approaching the major political parties( All Progressive Congress_ A.P.C and Peoples Democratic Party_ P.D.P ) governorship aspirants to acquiring about those plans they have for students/youth empowerment. The assembly met with Mr. Tobi (07010440904) the P.D.P students” campaign coordinator at the party secretariat, Onipan, Lagos State. The assembly also met Mr. Michael “holy Mike” (08084408900) the A.P.C campaign manager at his office; 106, St.finbarrs road, Akoka, Lagos state. Yaba College of Technology ‘14/15 students’ union president (Salvador 07081676568) and the federal college of education students’ union president (Bolumade 07062834063) were met and encouraged by the assembly to present their needs to these political aspirants. RE-RUN OF CAREER CENSUS U.S.A PROJECT Enumeration of the newly admitted students (‘14/15 academic session) for career census U.S.A project was proposed in the project calendar. Sole sponsorship of the re-run was requested from Mara mentor foundation; no financial commitments were achieved and as a result lead to its postponement to ‘15/16 academic session.

The president gave the governors basic tips for effective communication with class members as leaders that they are. 5 Img.22 (Mr. Babatola- University of Lagos counseling unit) Dwelled on issues relating to maintaining good students-lecturer relationship for academic excellence while the class governors also collectively made enquiries and queries on common issues like efficiency of course advisers, students’ plight and financial resources for class governors. 6 Img 23 {University of Lagos Students’ Union (U.L.S.U) } The Clerk of ULSU parliament was invited to enlighten and interact with class governors on constitutional rules guiding students. Although the clerk and his house members could not make it, due to understandable reasons, an ULSU member (at picture) who is also a class governor volunteered to guide the audience on certain rules. Event Supporters The assembly hereby acknowledges the support from class governors and stake holders who contributed to the success of the forum. It was anchored by Mc Wetindey and Brief. The following brands supported U.S.A at various capacities for the realization of the forum event. Img.24 Please Note: Bookdey.com actually contributed significantly to the class governors’ forum U.S.A project. A brand representative came from Abuja(Nigeria) to grace the event. sidi osh.com _logo not included_ but exhibited at venue. • 16. UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS STUDENTS’ ASSEMBLY (U.S.A) ACADEMIC SESSION REPORT 2014/2015 16 OTHER U.S.A SOCIETAL INVOLVEMENTS  Sharp solution to the university main library cloak room identified problem The assembly proposed a sharp solution to the problem identified with the bag keeping system of the school’s main library cloak room, by the introduction of a ‘owners tally’ system which was implemented immediately. The solution was proposed to bring an end to occurring cases of theft associated with the cloak room facility of which an assembly member was also a victim. The Laptop containing prepared database of career census enrolled students to be uploaded on the U.S.A website was lost to the identified problem; this ignited the students’ urge for a solution which was indeed proposed and acknowledged for action. Img.25 (The acknowledgment letter from University of Lagos Main Library Management)  Participation in the University’s counseling Unit Event. U.S.A was invited by the university students’ affairs, counseling unit; to participate in their event tagged “relationship talk” that held on the 9th July, 2015 at UNILAG main auditorium. The assembly participated by giving a brief speech and having a dramatic interaction with the audience on dress well models and perceptions. We were also granted an exhibition space to welcome students at venue. Img.26 (Invitation letter):

Our integral role was to serve as the UNILAG students’ body for the annual event. Our proposed contribution towards the success of the event can be highlighted as the following; # Publicity through handbills distribution. # Members ambassadorship status with the responsibility of mobilizing students for the event. # Human resource provision and facilitating the use of the only UNILAG electronic billboard for the event publicity.

  • 19. UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS STUDENTS’ ASSEMBLY (U.S.A) ACADEMIC SESSION REPORT 2014/2015 19 CONCLUSION Progress is known to be a function of efforts over time of which sacrifice is a multiplying factor. The assembly hereby gauges progress by accumulated achievements on its projects and impacts to the students and their society. The inter play of quantified support indices from #team U.S.A members sustained the movement right from the onset in ‘13/14 academic session to ‘14/15, the just concluded session. Having read and possibly graded the success level of U.S.A ‘14/15 projects, observers can indeed conclude that the assembly is projecting its societal values and ambitions progressively. Project funding was tasking but the various interactions made with numerous brands/companies can be expected to bring a good deal in the nearest future. Conclusion cannot be made without highlighting the non-surprising revolution of mobile kitchen and food delivery on campus that was wide spread this session. The revolution was already predicted by the ‘13/14 career census results, as cook (profession) was among the top 5 most chosen students career ambitions. Adequate preparation for such revolution via economic planning and respective capacity building is the established essence of the commonly talked about career census U.S.A project. SUPPORT We hereby call for all possible support from everyone, individuals and brands and bodies convinced or impressed by the assembly’s genuine societal cause. Let us help continue to make impact. *please be aware that transactions attributed to the University Of Lagos Students’ Assembly (U.S.A) bank account (Access Bank: 0694239669) are documented and regulated by the University Students’ Affairs Division, our governing body.
