1. Army Guard Preventive Medicine Program
MISSION
It is the goal of the Army National Guard to maintain a good balance of physical, mental,
and spiritual wellness to accomplish its worldwide mission. The three pillars as
previously stated not only help the individual but also help the team to accomplish their
mission collectively. The personal families are included as an extension of the soldier as
a whole to prepare him or her to achieve their missions.
VISION
The Army National Guard can implement a health preventive medicine program to
improve the soldiers’ wellness. The first step is to evaluate the status of the current
preventive medicine program. Secondly a plan should be developed based on the
needs of each unit on what their strategy will be to comply within the policies,
procedures and regulations in the army. The major public health concerns must
coincide with the awareness and goals of the military related to the leading health
indicators worldwide:
Physical activity
Overweight and obesity
Tobacco use
Substance abuse
Responsible sexual behavior
Mental Health
Injury and violence
Alcohol abuse
Environmental quality
Immunization
Access to health care
These goals can be used as the building blocks for community health awareness to
reach the goal of creating healthy soldiers in the military.
2. OBJECTIVES
1. Recognize the importance of nutrition in promoting health.
2. Preventillness and disease conditions.
3. Plan a fitness program that will prepare soldiers for the Physical Fitness Test.
4. Recognize the importance of proper hygienein field training exercises.
5. Tobacco/alcohol abuse.
6. Stress/mental health awareness.
7. Develop educational programs to promote awareness of proper nutrition, fitness
and well-being of soldiers.
Recommendation
I propose that the soldiers need to be informed of the efforts to provide a wellness
and preventive medicine program by using the following methods:
Concentrate on having a master fitness trainer at each unit.
Set up physical fitness courses in classroom setting and on-line.
Create a web page that has current information on wellness and preventive
medicine information.
Need support from the senior leadership down to company level for the program.
Medical Detachment should publish a quarterly newsletter updating issues and
concerns of any problems involving their monthly operations.
