To whom this may concern,
Renyu Gao
Renyu was a summer scholar at the Research School of Chemistry from December 2006 to
February 2007. During his time here he undertook practical experiments in molecular biology and
protein expression. Specifically, his project involved the identification of active site residues in the
Renilla type luciferase (Rluc) through the introduction point mutants into the Rluc gene, and the
expression and purification of mutant proteins in E. coli.
Renyu developed skills in molecular genetics and protein expression in his time with us. He
displayed an aptitude for experimental laboratory-based work and keenness to do well. He
possessed a strong grasp of the theory behind the methods involved. I strongly recommend him to
potential higher-degree supervisors and employers.
Sincerely,
Aaron Oakley BSc PhD
