Editor's Notes
Geography – rocky, mountainous, only 3% of land was arable, fjords (protection and seafood); Denmark had too much sandy land
Climate – gulfstream kept things mild enough and provided good weather for sailing (avoid inland travel)
Why leave – not enough farmland for a growing population, raid for food, trade to build wealth; search for more arable land (Vikings TV show – Wessex – just wanted land); internal conflicts; Europe was ripe for the picking – great wealth had accumulated there; but no written Viking records of these reasons
Settlements – England, Scotland, Dublin, Kiev (the Kievan Rus – Rus = the men who row = longboats)
Textbooks say Jarls/Karls/Thralls which is sort of true but it is more complex of course. The role of women was immense and important and amazing
Hel – not the Christian hell, but just the place you went if you didn’t die in battle. It could be quite nice or painful depending on how you lived your life
Christianity – conversions based on a grab for political power and tax breaks – not an epiphany
