1. Critique of Marywood Website
Social work has always been represented on the website/in various print materials using a
picture of a white woman. I believe that this is not only very stereotypical (“social
workers are all white/cishet/able-bodied/middle class women”); it is not inclusive and
sends a message that is contradictory to our value of diversity.
BSW page, same thing: Use more inclusive image. It features primary white women.
Photo gallery in BSW program pages: MORE INCLUSIVE. MSW gallery is much
better.
The electives page of the School of Social Work makes it seem that all the electives listed
are currently available, when they are not. I was actually misled by this when I chose to
apply.
Feature either a separate page or a disclaimer on the homepage of the School of Social
Work: “We are accepting of all people regardless of race/ethnicity, religion, disability
and/or neurodiverse status, age, socioeconomic status, gender identity and/or sexual
orientation.” Something along those lines.
Feature the phone number for the School of Social Work prominently upon the main
page, and if bold font. This is better than a very small footnote on the very bottom.
Same as above for website overall.
Mention diversity events, say that they can be attended for diversity hours during field,
and keep the list updated.
Openly advertise the Marywood University LGBTQIA+ Ally Training in solidarity.
Insert a little box for social media feed, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, etc.
Student resources page: if a POC social work organization/association exists, link it. If a
LGBTQIA+ organization/association exists, link it.
Student resources page: once the new center is open, link it there.
Student resources page: offer more publications.
Student resources page: links to social work job search websites. Not all use the words
“social work”; I’ve found macro-area sites that have been very useful.
Student resources page: link to social work blogs/social media accounts. For example, the
Social Work Helper Facebook page, Rachel West LMSW’s blog, “The Political Social
Worker.”
Under news: Offer links to websites featuring policy updates, world news, HuffPo,
ThinkProgress, etc.
