2. WHY DOES IT RESONATE FOR YOU?
Gender Equality resonates with me because as a young woman, it is scary to see the progress we have
made for women's rights go backwards. Women are just as valuable as men and they deserve to be
treated as such regardless of race or class/ I believe that ALL women deserve the same access to
education, healthcare, and employment that men have.
Gender Equality would ensure that everyone is seen as an individual and given opportunities that
improve their lives. It would improve society both socially and economically.
3. HOW CAN YOUR INTEREST BE APPLIED LOCALLY?
Promoting gender equality can be applied locally via the university. The school could promote
opportunities for women on the weekly ledger email sent out to students. If there were workshops for
women's leadership or job opportunities for women that students were made aware of, this would be a
way of accomplishing the UN’s goal of getting women the same equity in the workplace as men. The
school could also place flyers on the campuses poster boards promoting classes that educate students in
gender inequality as education is a key step to creating solutions for this issue.
4. WHERE CAN YOU PERSONALLY MAKE THE GREATEST
CONTRIBUTION?
I can personally make the greatest contribution to gender equality through my future career. One of the
biggest downfalls of gender inequality is interpersonal and sexual violence. No one should be subject to
this type of violence but unfortunately women are overrepresented in these statistics. I am currently on
the pathway to becoming a therapist and I want to specialize in counselling and empowering victims
and survivors of domestic and sexual abuse. Advocating for women's empowerment is a powerful
pathway to equality.
5. IS THERE A FEATURE OF SOCIAL MEDIA THAT CAN BE
UNIQUELY APPLIED TO THIS GOAL?
I think the global outreach social media has could be a unique feature applied to gender inequality.
Gender inequality is a global issue and many other countries has unique issues regarding it. Social media
allows us to connect with different people all over the world and I think social media could allow for
gender equality activist to engage with one another on a platform like Twitter or Instagram and educate
people on the issues they are facing. Widespread education could help us globally raise awareness and
create solutions for gender inequality.
