16. (a) Make notes of the paragraph given below :
Online education is fast becoming a major preferred mode
of education among students. Enrolling in regular courses
is increasingly getting highly competitive in India; so online
education has provided a wonderful alternative and several
students opt for it. As the term itself suggests, online
education means Web-based learning, but there is no
universally accepted definition. So, the methods used for
implementing online education may differ from institute to
institute. Some online courses may require students and
teachers to meet from time to time for physical lectures or
to conduct laboratory experiments while some may not
require this. This can vary depending on the course which
one opts to take up.
There are various benefits of opting for an online study
course. Students will not have to make any alteration in
their present daily routine. In fact, an additional degree
might actually help the student in improving career
prospects. By sitting in the comfort of their home or any
other place in the world, one can obtain degrees from many
renowned universities across the world. Students will not
have to travel anywhere to get the degree and can thus save
huge amounts on boarding and lodging. Though online
education is yet to pick up in India as compared to other
countries of the world, the prospect in this field is huge.
E-learning scope in India is immense. There are several
universities and other educational institutes that offer only
online education facilities to their students.

(b) Summarize the following paragraph :
Rammohan Roy was the pioneer of many social and
religious reforms in modern India. He was born in Bengal in
a well-to-do family in 1772. He studied many religions like
Islam, Christianity and Hinduism. He studied Sanskrit at
Benaras and learnt Arabic and Persian at Patna. Later he
learnt many more languages like English, Greek, Hebrew,
French and Latin. He wanted to eradicate the abuses that
had crept into Hinduism. He believed in the unity of God
and opposed idol worship, caste system and rituals. He
launched a campaign for the abolition of ‘Sati’. To achieve
his objectives he established Brahma Sabha at Calcutta on
August 20, 1828, which was called Brahma Samaj from
1830. It was an organization open to all, who believed in
the unity of God and who discarded idol worship. He
started two newspapers—one in Bengali and another in
Persian. Moghul Emperor gave him the title of Raja and
sent him to England as his convoy in 1831. He published
the Bengali translation of Vedas and Upanishads to enable
the people to read them as there was no base in those texts
for the social evils. He extended his support for the
introduction of English Education.

several books including You Can Win. His mission is to
‘ensure freedom through education and justice’. Shiv Khera
was born in a business family which used to have coal
mines at Kendua in Dhanbad, India. Soon after the
nationalization of coal mines by the Indian Government, he
had to search for his own living. In his early years he
worked as a car washer, a life insurance agent, and a
franchise operator before he became a motivational
speaker.

(b) Read the following paragraph and answer the questions
given below :
A young man asked Socrates the secrete of success.
Socrates told the young man to meet him near the river the
next morning. They met. Socrates asked the young man to
walk with him toward the river. When the water got up to
their neck, Socrates took the young man by surprise and
ducked him into water. The young man struggled to get out
but Socrates was strong and kept him there until he
started turning blue. Socrates pulled his head out of the
water and the first thing the young man did was to gasp
and take a deep breath of air. Socrates asked, ‘‘What did
you want the most when you were there?’’ The young man
replied, ‘‘Air.’’ Socrates said, ‘‘That is the secret to success.
When you want success as badly as you wanted the air,
then you will get it.’’ There is no other secret.
A burning desire is the starting point of all
accomplishment. Just as a small fire cannot give much
heat, a weak desire cannot produce great results.
Questions :
(i) What did a young man ask Socrates?
(ii) What did Socrates do when he took the young man to
the river?
(iii) What was the reply given by the young man?
(iv) Why did Socrates ask the young man to come to the
river?
(v) What is the synonym of the word, accomplishment?
