a British mess-up
Minicoy islanders have long settled in the Nicobar Islands. The
Andaman and Nicobar groups were called "Minikaa-raajje" by
Minicoy and Maldive islanders since those islands had a
reputation in the Maldives and Minicoy of being inhabited by
cannibals. A British official once asked a Minicoy islander what
the name of his island was. The islander told the official that he
was from Maliku but usually lived in "Minikaa-raajje"
(Nicobar). The official thought Maliku and Minikaa were the
same place and recorded the name of this islander's home as
"Minikaa". This later became anglicised as Minicoy.

The museologist was the first Indian to serve as
Superintendent of the Government Museum, Madras
from 1940 to 1960. He was the Vice Chancellor of
University of Kerala during 1969-70. He also did
pioneering excavations on the archaeological site at
Arikamedu.

John Allan Broun was a Scottish scientist who was the
second director of Travancore Observatory, established
by Swati Thirunal in 1837. He was interested in geo-
magnetism and its variations. To study that, he
established an observatory at another location which is
visible from the observatory in Trivandrum. It is
recorded that employees were deputed in shifts in the
second observatory and they were required to be away
from their homes for days together. To synchronize the
readings from both observatories, signaling system
using light was also set up.
