3. Analysis
The mood board I have arranged on the previous page has selective examples of Front covers, Contents
pages and Double page spreads from two alternative music magazines; NME and Q. I used examples
from these magazines to create an overall image that is connotes the Genre, target audience and over
style of the magazines. The existing music magazines are identifiable by their globally known
Mastheads. The typography and size of the masthead on the front covers are religiously the same on
each issue. The bright coloured scheme seems to be a common thing within music magazines aimed at
young people, they are energetic and eye catching. NME and Q constantly use the colour red throughout
their magazines as the target audience and Alternative Genre is a common convention through both.
Red connotes a strong definition of power and confidence, aggression, love and this is a common
stereotype through the alternative Music target audience. Both Q and NME feature the same Global
Music artist Florence and The machine. This emphasizes the same target audience that Q and NME are
aiming their magazine the interest of Florence is similar in the buyers. The Front covers and double
page’s are in relevance to each other as the main image featured with an artist on the front cover has
been presented as a main storyline on a double page spread within the magazine. NME and Q are
sophisticated, professionally published music magazines which are identified through their uses of
conventions like the Rule of thirds, Consistent colour scheme, use of professional images and
sophisticated use of typography.
