2. Introduction :
NPTEL is an Indian online learning platform for
University level Science, Technology, Engineering and
Mathematics subjects. It is jointly developed by IIT i.e Indian
Institute of Technology and IISC i.e Indian Institute of Science.
The initiative is funded by Ministry of Human Resources and
Development ,Government of India . The projects central idea is to
put recorded lecturers taught by its member institutes online for
open access. It operates one of the most extension educational
YouTube channel covering Engineering, basic Science and some
Humanities and Social Science subjects.
3. History:
NPTEL was initiated in 2003 by seven IITs i.e Bombay, Delhi,
Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras, Guwahati and Roorkee, and Indian Institute
of Science IISC. Since March 2014 ,NPTEL began offering online
courses along with certificates to those who completed the courses
successfully.
In its 1st Phase 2003 , NPTEL developed 235 courses in web/video
format. In 2nd phase ,2009-2014 an additional 600 web and video
courses were recorded , with new features such as indexing and keywords
search. A YouTube channel was created in the period.

In 3rd phase starting 2014 an optional NOC / NPTEL Online
Certification was offered through a proctored exam. It is along the lines
with OCW i.e Open Course ware by Massachusetts Institute of
Technology , USA. But many Asians opt for NPTEL because of the
accent difference.
5. About NPTEL:
The operational objective of NPTEL is to make high quality learning
material available to engineering institutions across the country by exploiting
the advances information and communication technology.
Its a curriculum building exercise and is directed towards providing
learning materials in Science and Engineering by adhering to the syllabi of
All India Council for Technical Education and the slightly modified curricular
of major affiliating universities. It has developed curriculum based video
courses and web based E-courses targeting students and faculty in
Institutions offering UG engineering programs. Basically NPTEL is a website
where regular courses from reputed institutions like IIT’s, NIT’s and IISc are
hosted for free.
6. Benefits:
NPTEL contents can be used core curriculum
content for training purposes. A large number of students who
are unable to attend scholarly institutions through NPTEL will
have access to quality content from them.
Studying NPTEL online courses is beneficial. It means
they are certifying that you have completed this course
successfully . NPTEL certificates also play a Vitol role in
placements as they are the most upper body in India from
where you can get it certified. These courses boost the
knowledge on the subject . It can also help academically.
7. How does it work?
NPTEL online courses are open to everyone . The courses
inprogrammimg , data structures and algorithms are aimed at
undergraduate college students i.e. any engineering or science
streams students in their second year or above .The course duration
will be for about 10 to 11 weeks.
The videos include lectures on varied range on scientific and
technical courses which are taught in this institutes.

Engineering, Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering,
Chemistry and Biochemistry, Civil Engineering, Computer
science and Engineering, Engineering Design, Electrical
Engineering, Electronics and Communications Engineering
etc.
9. Conclusion:
NPTEL is the most accessed library of peer reviewed
educational content in the world, an emailed fact sheet states, its
ranked at 328 in India. Its Youtube channel with close of 20,000
videos , has more than 8 lakh subscribers and over 245 million
views. While 80% of NPTEL audience come from India and there
are participants who come from around the world like from
Pakistan, Bangladesh, Srilanka, Malaysia, Indonesia, Saudi apart
from U.S and Canada.
