People have been harnessing wind power for thousands of years, first using it to propel boats on the Nile River as early as 5,000 BC. By the 11th century, windmills were widely used in the Middle East and Europe for grinding grain and pumping water, and the technology spread globally through trade and colonization. In the late 19th century, small wind turbines generated electricity in remote areas. While wind power declined with rural electrification in the 1930s, it is seeing renewed use today mainly to generate electricity but also for transportation, agriculture, and water pumping.
