“I’ve worked in the
same technical office
since I left school”
How long have you worked for the company?
Philipp Balser: I began at SPIE Deutschland & Zentraleuropa, SPIE Lück with a one-year
internship straight after school. I worked on worksites learning how to do things like cabling,
and then I spent four months in the technical office. After that, while I did my Bachelor and
Master’s degrees, I continued working part-time for the company in the same technical office.
I recently graduated with my Master’s degree, so now I’m working full-time in the technical
office as a Project Manager.
What are your responsibilities?
P.B.:I’mamemberofateamofsevenpeople.Weperformtechnicalstudiesforallthecontracts,
and we also keep everybody in the company up-to-date on new technical standards that affect
electrical engineering. I spend about 70% of my time in the office and 30% on worksites
supervising projects. For bigger projects several of us work together. Our largest project at the
moment is a data centre for a leading software developer. We are the general contractor, so we
have to manage a much wider range of technical issues than usual.
The Lück Group was acquired by SPIE about a year ago. What impact has this had?
P.B.: It has been very positive. There used to be about 1,000 of us, but now that we are part of
the German subsidiary of SPIE, we have about 15,000 German colleagues. So it’s great for
networking and for getting technical help when we need it and being able to offer it. We can
