1. Matter cannot be either created or destroyed.
2. The gas may escape into the air/surroundings ; its
mass will therefore not be recorded by a balance.
3. Name the type of bonding in each of the diagrams
below: (3)
a. Metallic b. Covalent c. Ionic
4. 47-26 = 21g (one mark for units in final answer) (2)
5. 132.5 kJ x 1000 = 132500 J (1)
Challenge: One method of collecting a gas in a reaction would be
to place a balloon over the mouth of the test tube. This would trap
the gas, preventing it from moving out into the air/surroundings.

Editor's Notes
Script:
We’ve learned what chemical reactions are, and how to write them correctly. We’re now going to start looking at some specific examples of chemical reactions. Today, we’ll be looking at the reactions of metals with oxygen, and the terms oxidation and reduction.
In a chemical reaction, oxygen can either be added to an element, or removed from an element.
Oxidation is the addition of oxygen to an element. In this example, the magnesium is gaining oxygen, so the magnesium is being oxidised. To gain an oxygen, magnesium must lose electrons. So oxidation is also the loss of electrons.
Reduction is the removal of oxygen from an element. In this example, the copper is losing oxygen, so the copper is being reduced. To lose an oxygen, copper must gain electrons. So reduction is also the gain of electrons.
