Automated Design of a Single Cylinder Internal

In this overall study, we will:
 Design a single cylinder internal combustion engine, specifically the connecting rod
and crankshaft in such a way that their main features are easily manipulated,
 Perform a motion study on the assembly to yield force and motion information,
 Perform a stress simulation study in order to properly size components based on a
desired, factor of safety
 Automate the process.
Objective
Assumptions
 SolidWorks assembly has been created, consisting of block, crankshaft, piston wrist
pin, head, valves, cam and connecting rod parts.
 Piston and head material is aluminum, crank, valves, valve springs, wrist pin and
connecting rod are 1020 CD steel, block is cast iron.
 Any part of the engine can be added and altered to make a more “realistic” engine
design.
 Crankshaft has crank pin diameter “Dia_Cpin.”
 Starting dimensions are taken directly off of solid models, both stroke and bore are
fixed.
 6. All static FOS are 2.5 based on Von Mises.

Conclusion
 We have optimized the engine using specific values.
 We have used software's like solid works, mat lab and
VBA to analyze our model.
 Done automation of the system and completed the loop.
 Reduced the shaking forces by adding balancing masses
 FOS comes out to be under permissible limits.
