The teacher plans to use a Smartboard game to teach basic Chinese characters to beginning Chinese students (Chinese 101). Students will throw objects like koosh balls at circles on the Smartboard, and each circle is linked to a different page in the teacher's notebook containing images, words and pictures related to a Chinese character. There will be 24 characters and pages total. The pages will include pictures, sounds, text and videos to help students understand the characters. As students hit different circles, the teacher will cross them out so the same pages are not repeated. The game supports universal design principles by creating an accessible and engaging learning environment using multimedia like pictures, highlighting and sound.
3. How would I use the Smartboard?
I’m going to let my students play this game by having them throw one or more koosh balls (or other soft
objects such as a bean bag) at the Smart Board. And each circle is linked to a different page in the
notebook. I will fill in the pages with images, words, and pictures to help students have a better
understanding of some basic Chinese characters.
4. For example, when my students throw a
ball and hit the blue circle at the left
upright corner, the page will jump to a
page shows one Chinese character, and
since it is randomly, the link will go to
page 12.
There are 24 circles on the
first page, and each 1 circle
links to a note page
randomly.
5. There will be 24 different Chinese characters
in total.
I will include pictures, sounds, texts and
videos as much as possible in every linked
page.
6. For example, if the students hit the blue circle at left
upright corner, and page 12 is about the Character
“水“. This is what page 12 will looks like.

7. Besides, I can also use “pens” in the smart box to
highlight the key points for my students.
I can also use magic pen to enlarge the picture, write
additional “invisible” notes, and to spotlight key ideas.
I can also erasers to remove all my notes so I can use it
for my next class.
8. Every time my students hit a circle, I will cross out
it after we finish the link. Therefore we will not hit
same circles repetitively.
9. How the lesson would support
Universal Design?
-This lesson would support Universal
Design because it creates an environment
which is accessible, usable and fun. By
playing games, everyone benefits.
-In the smart box, the lecture includes
multimedia elements. For example, the use
of pictures, videos, highlighting pens and
voices. Students can learn knowledge in
various ways. And it also can be used in the
low physical effort.
- The lesson also uses various ways to tap
into students’ interests, and increase
students’ motivation of learning.
