Responsibilities include:
• Work directly with District Superintendent to oversee the management of school business operations,
and to ensure all educators are actively supporting the school’s mission, vision, and goals for students.

classroom (as long as plans and teaching reflect current Alaska State Standards), and in which
teachers expected to take greater responsibility in managing classroom rules, norms, and behaviors.

expectations for teacher effectiveness. Effectiveness is evaluated by conducting regular informal and
formal classroom observations utilizing the Charlotte Danielson rubric; providing relevant and regular
positive feedback and/or suggestions for improvement; providing professional training opportunities
in classroom management, pedagogy, and best practices; coaching and mentoring new teachers and
staff; and helping all teachers and staff create a positive school culture committed and dedicated to
serving students.
• Instituted peer mentoring opportunities in which teacher leaders worked with new teachers,
acclimating and supporting them as they transitioned into a new teaching assignment.
• Instituted “peer observations” as a means for teachers to provide non-evaluative feedback to one
another and engage in collegial conversations about best practices.
• Took part in the nomination of teachers to receive awards, which resulted in one teacher winning the

significant increase from 7% proficiency in Language Arts on the district’s first quarter Measured
Progress Short Cycle Assessment (SCA) to 54% proficiency on the second quarter SCA, as well
similar increases in math proficiency. Since the Measured Progress assessments are equivalent to the
New Mexico Standards Based Assessments (NMSBA), this increase provided teachers with an
encouraging prediction of the spring 2012 NMSBA scores, which was verified upon receipt of
NMSBA scores. As a result, Tohatchi High School won a district award for greatest growth among
high schools for the 2011-2012 school year.
• Served as the key administrator on record for all Special Education Individual Educational Plan (IEP),
Behavioral Intervention Plan (BIP), and Manifestation Determination meetings.
• Worked directly with the district’s Special Educational Coordinator in order to improve the school’s
special education services to students via trainings for both special education teachers and general
education teachers in the inclusion classroom model, classroom management strategies for inclusion
classes, and the importance in providing accommodations to students with IEP’s.
