Week 14 Social Studies Review
TEKS: TEKS.b.5.A, TEKS.b.18.A, TEKS.b.18.B, TEKS.b.18.C, TEKS.b.19.A, TEKS.b.19.B
Words to Know this Week:
Explorer, natural resource, coordinates, map key, scale, urban, suburban, rural, attractions,
North, South, East, West, Cardinal and Ordinal Directions
Objective: Students will be able to recognize a map, compass rose, and map keys. Students will
be able to color code a map based on the directions given.
Note: Since this is a review week for the students, we will re-walk through what we learned in
the previous weeks. Students should know their directions by now, how to use coordinates,
and different communities. Students have also been exposed to natural resources.
Lesson Plan Steps:
1. Students will be given their copy of the Studies Weekly newsletter.
2. I will ask my students what they see on the first page. Does anything look familiar to
them?
3. We will revisit natural resources (man-made vs. non-renewable.) I will explain to
students that a natural resource is any material from the Earth that people can use. A
man made resource is something people can make (clothing, coca-cola, cars.)
4. We will revisit what the different types of communities are made of. Such as: What
makes one community different from another (suburban, urban, rural.)
5. On page 2 of the hand out, we will revisit coordinate planes and practice as a class how
to find certain places by using coordinates.
6. On page three I will read the prompt to the class, pointing out and reading, the map key
and scale and what these represent (mileage.)
7. We will answer the questions together as a whole.
8. On the second part of page three I will read the questions to the students and have
them solve the questions based on their prior knowledge. After 3-4 minutes we will
discuss the correct answers and what makes them correct.
9. The last page of the newsletter will be read and done together as a class, revisiting
important holidays and communities once more.
10. I will hand out a “Reading a Map” worksheet and go over the first example as a whole
class. Students will continue doing this activity for the remainder of Social Studies.
