INTRODUCTION
• Non-governmental organizations, commonly
referred to as NGOs,are usually non-profit
organizations that are active in educational,
health care, public policy, social, human rights,
environmental, and other areas to effect changes
according to their objectives.
• NGOs are usually funded by donations
• NGOs are highly diverse groups of organizations
engaged in a wide range of activities, and take
different forms in different parts of the world.
• Outreach is an activity of providing services to
any populations who might not otherwise have
access to those services.
DDRC Scheme
• Establishment of District Disabilty
Rehabilitation Centres in Served Districts of
the Country
• During 1985-1990, District Disability Rehabilitation
Centres (DDRCs) started as outreach activity of the
Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment of
Government of India for providing comprehensive
services to the persons with disabilities at the grass
root level and for facilitating creation of the
infrastructure and capacity building at the district
level for awareness generation, rehabilitation and
training of rehabilitation professionals
• The District Disability Rehabilitation Centres are set
up under the Plan Scheme . “Scheme for
Objectives of setting up of DDRC
• Setting up of District Disability Rehabilitation
Centres (DDRCs) which would provide
rehabilitative support to persons with disabilities
through:-
• Survey & identification of persons with disabilities through
camp approach;
• Awareness Generation for encouraging and enhancing
prevention of disabilities, early detection and intervention etc.
• Therapeutic Services e.g. Physiotherapy, Occupational
Therapy, Speech Therapy etc.;
• Facilitation of disability certificate, bus passes and other
concession/facilities for persons with disabilities;
• Referral and arrangement of surgical correction through Govt.
& Charitable institutes;
• Arrangement of loans for self employment, through banks &
other financial institutions;
• Counseling of persons with disabilities, their parents & family
• Promotion of barrier free environment;
• To provide supportive and complimentary services to
promote education, vocational training and employment
for persons with disabilities through:-
• Providing orientation training to teachers, community
and families
• Providing training to persons with disabilities for early
motivation and early stimulation for education,
vocational training and employment.
• Identifying suitable vocations for persons with
disabilities, keeping in view local resources and
designing and providing vocational training and
identifying suitable jobs, so as to make them
economically independent.
Samarthanam Trust for the
Disabled
• Samarthanam Trust for the Disabled, founded in 1997, is a
non-profit organization working towards facilitating
opportunities to enable persons with disabilities and the
underserved to keep pace with the rest of the society by
providing quality education, accommodation, nutritious food,
vocational training and placement based rehabilitation. It is
based in Bangalore, India with centers across India and
abroad.
• The founders, being visually impaired and having witnessed
various challenges, have together conceptualized
Samarthanam, an organization which would cater to people
with disabilities, including visually impaired and
underprivileged. Education was conceived to be the basic right
of every individual, irrespective of status and disability.
• And hence they initiated on the development of various
programmes at primary, secondary and higher education levels
and also various other initiatives solely dedicated for visually
impaired and underserved. As the organization’s objective and
drive started gathering support, Samarthanam’s areas of
service also widened. The organization moved onto
establishing Livelihood Resource Centres, Rehabilitation
Centres, Social Enterprises and a Sports Association for the
visually impaired.
• Samarthanam expanded and fortified to be recognized as an
umbrella organization, offering services to hundreds of people
with disabilities, underserved and women in distress.
Samarthanam promotes building of an inclusive society which
provides equal opportunities, without discrimination, for the
development of the visually impaired, disabled and
AshaJyothi Handicapped
Welfare Society
• AshaJyothi Handicapped Welfare Society is a registered
Non-Government Organization, established in 1998 in
Hanuman Junction, Andhra Pradesh with the mission to
provide diverse services for development, education and
rehabilitation of children with mental and physical disabilities.
The center children are primarily abandoned disabled orphans
with a few from Underprivileged background
• The primary objective of AshaJyothi founders and staff is to
empower these children with varied disabilities ranging from
mental retardation, hearing & speech impaired, polio, etc. and
help them in the path of rehabilitation and independence,
where possible.
• Their services comprise of Early Identification of disabilities,
Individual treatment plan, Special Education, Therapeutic
