3,19,780 people, indicating bright career
opportunities. In fact, the contributions
of internationally credible education and
training centres and programmes such as
Hiranandani Orthopaedic Medical Education
and Manipal Education and Medical Group
are unparalleled.
This can be attributed to a number
of growth drivers such as infrastructural
investment, which, according to Invest
India, is expected to be $200 billion by 2024.
Improved life expectancy, as well as rising
disposable income and increased insurance
penetration, are other factors. Reduced
costs due to greater eļ¬ƒciency facilitated
by technology particularly robotic process
automation and rise in health and wellness
centres are also contributing to the growth
of Indiaā€™s shining healthcare industry. Robotic
and computer assisted therapy is also used at
rehabilitationcentressuchasJupiterHospitalā€™s
neuro-rehabilitation centre, which is also
home to Asiaā€™s ļ¬rst aquatic rehabilitation pool.
With the governmentā€™s prerogative to roll-

healthcare programme, the importance of
providing quality, aļ¬€ordable and accessible
healthcare will continue to be the key
parameter for economic success.
In this supplement, we proļ¬le
changemakers and trendsetters in Indian
healthcare. They highlight the latest
advancements in the sector and the
challenges that lie ahead, as well as share
their road maps for a promising future.
Indiaā€™s Dynamic Healthcare Sector
India has come a long way from the smallpox epidemic in 1974. Of course, there have been
newer challenges such as the swine u of 1 and the ipah virus outbrea in erala in 1
but that only proves how advanced our medical research is.
According to Invest India, the healthcare information technology market is expected
to grow 1.5 times from the current $1billion by 2020. Medical technology plays an
important role not just in terms of diagnostics and surgical procedures but also support
functions such as R&D and medical informatics.
Smart Healthcare
Telemedicine or telehealth is fast catching up. Video conferencing, for instance, saves time
and money. m-health (mobile health) and e-health are fast catching up too and there several
mobile applications for mental health, weight loss, chronic care management and more.
Applications that identify potential health threats and examine digital information also exist.
Telemonitoring technology has increased mobility, enabling doctors to monitor vital signs and
symptoms remotely.
In India, the home healthcare market size is roughly $4 billion with ancillary markets about
$20 billion. The concept of medical tourism is also ļ¬‚ourishing and expected to grow to $9 billion
by 2020. Scientists have been able to examine diseases on a cellular level and produce antibodies
against them. Stem cell therapy has revolutionised the care of autistic patients, as well as those
suļ¬€ering from strokes, spinal cord injuries, muscular dystrophy and cerebral palsy.
There are numerous surgeries which are being carried out without opening the body. Laser
operations, for instance. In fact, minimally-invasive surgeries such as transcatheter therapies are
allowing patients to spend less time in recovery.
The new technologies of today even allow doctors to ļ¬nd out an increasing amount
of detailed information about both, the progression and treatment of disease, and oļ¬€er
personalised treatment based on a patientā€™s genes. The system of integrated patient clinics
has had a great impact where the patient meets with many specialists together. Before the
meeting, the doctors can access the patientā€™s detailed history.
A Promising Future
The value of Indiaā€™s healthcare sector may increase to $372 billion by 2022 according to Invest
India. By 2020, India is expected to rank among the top three healthcare markets in terms of
incremental growth. In 2017, the industry stood as the fourth largest employer, employing

ratiļ¬es Apollo Hospitalsā€™ position as the leader in Indian healthcare
industry.
Apollo Hospitals is today at the forefront of the Technological
Renaissance in healthcare. Leading from the front, Apollo Hospitals
has ensured that the best of medical advances and technology are
made available to the patients in India, making available world class
healthcare at a fraction of the cost as compared to other countries
across the globe.
Cardiovascular diseases and Cancer are the two main NCDs
responsible for premature mortality in India today, and along with
chronic respiratory disease and diabetes, the probability of dying
from these four NCDs is 26%! NCDs today account for 61% of total
deaths in India and with the vision and dedication to reduce these
numbers, Apollo Hospitals is the bulwark against the tsunami of Non-
communicable diseases (NCDs) that the country faces today.
Cardiovascular diseases including coronary heart disease, stroke,
and hypertension contribute to over 45% of all deaths from NCDs.
Heart problems can be diagnosed early, managed well and treated
completely in most cases and it is here that Apollo Hospitals has
redeļ¬nedā€˜Heart Careā€™in the country.
Pioneering cardiac surgery with the repair of an Atrial Septal
defect in 1983, today, the Apollo Heart Institutes oļ¬€er a multitude of
treatments and procedures in cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery
at centres across the country. Apollo Hospitalsā€™ healing touch has
helped patients with an unmatched record of over 1,52,000 cardiac
and cardiothoracic surgeries, one of only 10 hospitals in the world to
achieve these volumes.
Apollo Hospitalsā€™ journey in cardiac care has seen multiple ļ¬rsts
including Coronary Artery Stenting for the ļ¬rst time in India, the ļ¬rst
keyhole multiple bypass surgery and the ļ¬rst heart transplant in India.
Today, Apollo Hospitalsā€™ prowess in cardiac care is backed by the
largest cohort of cases treated with advanced cardiac interventional
methods. These include three key innovations ā€“ MitraClip, TAVI (Trans-
catheter AorticValve Implantation) orTAVR (Trans-catheter AorticValve
Replacement) and MICS CABG or MICAS (Minimally Invasive Coronary
Artery Bypass Surgery). Specialists in structural and interventional
cardiology at Apollo Hopsitals have successfully performed 6 MitraClip
procedures out of the 9 performed in India, over 85 TAVI/TAVRs with

The state-of-the-art Apollo Proton Cancer
Centre APCC in outh ast Asia rst of its

Hospitalsā€™ position as the leader in Indian
healthcare industry.
A
renowned cardiologist known for his intuitive diagnostic
abilities, Dr. Prathap Reddy was just turning 50 when he
launched Apollo Hospitals and in the process revolutionised
healthcare in India. Thirty-six years later, with more than 32 million
people treated, the Apollo Hospitals group has become one of the
worldā€™s leading centres for quaternary healthcare including cardiac
surgery, oncology, organ transplants (Heart, Lung, Liver, Pancreas,
Intestine and Kidney), bone marrow transplants, liver disease, joint
replacement and robotic surgery.
Today, Apollo Hospitals is renowned for delivering cutting-edge
healthcare embellished with a human touch at par with the best
centres in the world. The state-of-the-art Apollo Proton Cancer Centre
(APCC) in South East Asia ā€“ ļ¬rst of its kind ā€“ opened earlier this year,
excellent clinical outcomes and a nation-leading
1250+ MICS CABGs with superior outcomes at par
with international standards, at only half or one
third of the cost compared to global price matrix.
Cancer is the second leading cause of death
globally and according to the World health
Organization, 1 in 6 deaths globally in 2018 was
due to cancer. Apollo began its ļ¬ght against cancer
in 1993 with a dedicated state-of-the-art facility for
cancer care in Chennai. Apollo has made signiļ¬cant
advances in treating this dreaded disease and has
been leading from the frontline in the war on cancer
by setting up South East Asiaā€™s ļ¬rst proton therapy
centre for cancer, the Apollo Proton Cancer Centre
(APCC) launched earlier this year, which serves
over3.5 billion people across South East Asia. The
clinical advantages of proton therapy as compared
to conventional radiation therapy are many, with
more than 2,00,000 patients successfully treated
worldwide. Proton beam therapy takes the ļ¬ght to
cancer with increased precision and greater dose
delivery at the precise site of the cancer, minimizing
damage to healthy tissue, better quality of life and
a higher cure rate. This ultimately results in better
results with fewer short and long-term side eļ¬€ects.
But even prior to the launch of the APCC, Apollo
Hospitals has always been quick to adopt new
technology to help advance treatment for cancer.
From the ļ¬rst Cyberknife Robotic Radio Surgery
SystemtotheTrueBeamSTxstereotaticradiosurgery
system, Apollo empowered its doctors to oļ¬€er
patients with cancer, a non-invasive alternative
to traditional surgery. Cancer specialists at Apollo
Hospitals can use the most advanced TrueBeam
STx system, which is the fastest in treatment speed,
precision and simplicity to accurately target tumors
of the brain, spine, lung and other areas that are
typically diļ¬ƒcult to treat surgically.
Apollo Cancer Institutesā€™ unique approach
to diagnosing, treating and monitoring cancer
powered by specialized expert organ-speciļ¬c
tumor boards that discuss diagnostics and therapy
options to provide the most beneļ¬cial and eļ¬€ective treatment to thousands of patients.
As technology has evolved rapidly over the last two decades, Apollo Hospitals has
also been at the forefront in adopting Artiļ¬cial Intelligence (AI) to bring a paradigm shift
to the practice of medicine with tools designed to equip doctors in the ļ¬ght against
the rising burden of NCDs, especially cardiology, cancer and neurology. Apollo Hospitalsā€™
Intelligent Platform ā€“ designed in collaboration with Microsoft ā€“ helps to predict
cardiovascular disease risk score in the Indian population. Doctors across the Apollo
network of hospitals are today leveraging this AI-powered API to predict risk of CVD and
drive preventive cardiac care across the country.
Combining Applied AI and clinical expertise, many other platforms are being
developed for other NCDs that include Adult diabetes care pathway, Hypertension
treatment and control pathway, cholesterol management in cardiovascular risk pathway,
and prevention of stroke and CVA. The future will see AI playing a major part at Apollo
Hospitals in prediction and monitoring of disease while empowering physicians with the
power of data to make superior clinical decisions.

DM Healthcareā€™s India operations are often
leveraged for their expertise in advanced
tertiary and quaternary care, and each year
its multi-specialty hospitals in Kerala and
Bengaluru receive a signiļ¬cant number of
patients from international markets.
In India, Aster DM Healthcare is also being
recognised for clinical excellence and the
introduction of innovative medical solutions
that address patientsā€™ needs. Recently, at
Aster CMI Hospital in Bengaluru, a 13-year
old patient from Mauritius was brought,
suļ¬€ering from rarest of the rare Complement
Deļ¬ciency genetic disease, C1q deļ¬ciency
since the age of 2. She underwent a
successful bone marrow transplant for the
condition and became the ļ¬rst teen in Asia
suļ¬€ering from this complex condition to
receive this particular treatment. Globally, less
than 10 such cases have been successfully
transplanted.
Aster Medcity Hospital is another example of
the companyā€™s high quality and personalised
medical care commitment. A 670-bed
multi-specialty quaternary care facility with
10 dedicated Centres of Excellence, it is
the ļ¬rst quaternary care hospital in Kerala
to have achieved the coveted JCI (Joint

Quality Healthcare
made affordable and
accessible in India
As one of the top healthcare service providers in India,
Aster DM Healthcare continues to push the boundaries
of healthcare excellence.
T
he healthcare market is India is expected to reach US$ 372 billion by 2022, while the
hospitals industry is expected to grow at a CAGR of 16-17% to reach Rs. 8.66 trillion by
FY22. This growth will be primarily driven by rising incomes, better health awareness,
growing incidence of lifestyle diseases and improving access to health insurance. With the
governmentā€™s prerogative to roll-out the worldā€™s largest government-funded healthcare
programme, the importance of providing quality healthcare that is aļ¬€ordable and accessible
will continue to be the key parameter for economic success.
At Aster DM Healthcare, the universal healthcare philosophy of Quality, Aļ¬€ordability and
Accessibility for all was ingrained in the company, since its inception in 1987 in the UAE. Starting
from a single clinic in Bur Dubai, to becoming a globally integrated healthcare conglomerate
with 24 hospitals, 114 clinics and 219 pharmacies across nine countries, Aster DM Healthcare
has over the last 15 years grown from strength to strength providing quality care through
its network of 12 hospitals and eight clinics in India. Today, it is the third largest healthcare
provider in India by market capex.
The company commenced its India operations in 2001 with the establishment of the Malabar
Institute of Medical Science in Calicut (Aster MIMS), Kerala, which oļ¬€ers end-to-end care
across primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary healthcare. Within its global network, Aster
and transcatheter aortic valve implantations
(TAVI), which have set the benchmark for
clinical excellence in the region. Aster MIMS
Hospital in Kottakal, DM WIMS in Wayanand
and the recently introduced 300 bedded
Aster MIMS Hospital in Kannur are some of
the other facilities in Kerala. Apart from Kerala,
Aster Hospitals are located in 4 others states in
India: Aster CMI Hospital in Bengaluru (Aster
RV Hospital to be operational soon); Aster
Aadhar Hospital in Kolhapur, Maharashtra;
Aster Prime Hospital in Telengana; and
Ramesh Hospitals in Andhra Pradesh.
As part of its commitment to India, Aster DM
Healthcare listed its stocks on the Bombay
Stock Exchange in February 2018. A signiļ¬cant
proportion of the proceeds gathered from
the IPO are now being used to strengthen its
oļ¬€erings in India. In addition, the company is
constantly striving to enhance the learning
opportunities for its doctors. Aster has been
recognised by the Royal College of Obstetrics
and Gynaecologists (RCOG) for its international
programme accreditation for Core Medical
Training (CMT). Aster Medcity in Kerala and
Aster Hospital at Mankhool in Dubai UAE will
be the second in the world after Iceland to
deliver CMT outside the UK. Aster Medcity has
also signed an MOU with theThomas Jeļ¬€erson
University, USA to provide its doctors with
access to global knowledge, research and best
practices. The ļ¬rst collaboration to be initiated
is a multi-organ transplant programme.
As one of the top healthcare service providers
in India, Aster DM Healthcare continues to
push the boundaries of healthcare excellence
and provide compassionate care to people
across geographies.
Q&A with Dr. Azad Moopen-
Founder Chairman and Managing
Director, Aster DM Healthcare
A single clinic in 1987, to a chain
of hospitals present in multiple
countries. Please share your inspiring
entrepreneurial journey till now.
When we started Aster DM Healthcare as
a single doctor clinic in Dubai in 1987, we
wanted to provide aļ¬€ordable quality healthcare
services to people. Over the last three decades,
our eļ¬€orts have seen us expanding our oļ¬€ering
beyond Dubai, to other GCC countries and
India. We operate now in 9 countries with 24
hospitals, 114 Clinics and 219 Pharmacies.
We commenced our India operations in 2001 with the establishment of the Malabar
Institute of Medical Science (Aster MIMS) in Calicut, Kerala and currently we have 12
hospitals and 8 clinics in India with a total bed capacity of 4400. We see India as a growth
market and with this thought we listed our company in India in February 2018.
Aster DM Healthcare recently completed a year of listing in India. How has the
one year journey been? Also, what is your strategy and focus for Indian market?
We see India as a growth market. With 12 hospitals in India, we are now looking at
expanding our presence through organic growth and acquisitions. We would like to
further consolidate our presence in South and Western India. Our model is to have large
hospitals with 300-500 beds in major cities. If any opportunity comes up in the North
which is suited to our business model, then we can consider. We prefer asset-light model
where the land and building are either on long-term lease hold or O&M.We can also look
for inorganic growth through acquisitions if the valuations are reasonable.
Presently, 17% of our revenues come from India and our aim is to increase the ļ¬gure to
25% revenue from India in the next few years. Considering the current demand for quality
healthcare, India is a focus market for us where we have 4,400 beds and have plans to take
it up to 6,000 beds through 3 hospitals which are in the pipeline: Bengaluru, Chennai and
Thiruvananthapuram. For this, we have plans to invest upto Rs750 crore by 2022.
You aim to be a global health service provider. What differentiates you from
other healthcare service providers?
We are diļ¬€erent from other healthcare service providers as we provide complete
specialties of services from primary to quaternary care through the network of clinics,
hospitals and pharmacies. We do everything from primary consultation to cardiology
transplantations in our hospitals. Another diļ¬€erentiating feature is that we have 3
separate brands in GCC catering to the upper, middle and lower-income groups called
Medcare, Aster and Access. At some point of time in future we would like to expand it to
other countries including India.
Another very important point which diļ¬€erentiates us from other healthcare providers is
our major involvement in academics with an intake of nearly 1000 students every year
which helps us to have a pipeline of medical professionals. One of the most important
diļ¬€erential features is Aster Volunteers which is the CSR arm of Aster providing service to
large number of people every year in India. We believe that God has given us health and
wealth, part of which has to be given back free of cost to needy people.

Hiranandani Orthopaedic Medical
Education
The hospital marched ahead in the ļ¬eld
of Orthopaedics. We were the pioneers in
computer navigation surgery in the city.
We devised protocols for patient safety that
have gained International recognition and is
published in leading Orthopaedic Journals.
This has resulted in a dramatic decrease in
post-operative complications. Also using
the computer navigation in most cases has
given ļ¬ne results as cases performed in 2004
are being followed up in the hospital and
they are without any symptom. This is an
outstanding achievement as the incidence
of revision surgery increases after the ļ¬rst
decade. The department went into using
platelet rich plasma for chronic ligament
and joint paint with outstanding results.
Many a sportsperson has beneļ¬tted from
this therapy. Our Postgraduate teaching
program was developed under Hiranandani
Orthopaedic Medical Education (HOME).
Our work has gained us recognition as
being an Orthopaedic training centre by
SICOT (Societe Internationaale de Chirurgie

has crossed these portals. The department

naugurated on the 22nd of February, 2004, the Dr L H Hiranandani Hospital is located
in the picturesque Hiranandani Gardens at Powai. Armed with the mission of ā€˜Being
the preferred choice for healing and good healthā€™, the hospital set about its task of
engaging in rendering quality of care. And with very good reason, the hospital aspired to
mirror the long and illustrious career of a titan in the ļ¬eld of medicine in general and ENT
in particular ā€“ Padmabhushan Dr L H Hiranandani.
From getting the ISO certiļ¬cation in 2006 the hospital took the giant step in 2007 to get
the NABH accreditation from the Quality Council of India. This was a ļ¬rst not only in the
city of Mumbai but also in the Western region of India!!Thus not a single act of our hospital
coming into being remained mundane. The hospital marched on to get its Laboratory the
National accreditation for all its services (NABL) in 2008 and then marched on to even have
the Blood Bank get the NABH accreditation in 2011. The hospital has aspired for excellent
Nursing and this led us to also the Nurses to be recognized by the Quality Council with
Nursing Excellence in March 2016. We thus gave meaning to standardization in healthcare
as the hospital has reļ¬ned process that are followed.
While quality has been the cornerstone of this dynamic outļ¬t, professionally too we were
well recognized. Arguably ours was the ļ¬rst hospital to popularize and propagate Primary
Angioplasty in Myocardial Infarction (PAMI) and we not only saved lives but have also
ensured those aļ¬„icted do not have myocardial damage! This certainly means that they will
renders all forms of orthopaedic treatment, from joint replacement,
spine surgery, orthopaedic surgery, sports injury therapy and all this
encompassed with a sound physical rehabilitation centre that can
take care of each need right from removing pain to restoring strength.
Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology
The greatest joy that a family experiences is to welcome a new member
in its midst. Thus delivering the happiness quotient has been the ā€˜True
Northā€™for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Not only was
the department able to deliver this happiness, but soon turned into
a centre of excellence that could oļ¬€er treatment for the woman from
ā€˜womb to tombā€™. Today the department has a diversiļ¬ed into many
specialized clinics. They are ā€“ Pre pregnancy counseling, Infertility (Male
and Female) or Human reproduction ā€“ The department also leads in
all techniques related to human reproduction with benchmarked
results. The equipment to deliver this sort of excellence is sourced from
leading vendors and with the expertise existing the results had to be
extraordinary. Surgical excellence has been the core competence in
the department. Today we perform the trueā€˜Stitch lessā€™vaginal surgery
for operations that are generally performed by the abdominal route.
Minimal access surgery is performed using all the available techniques
in the world. Pregnancy may be complicated and to address such
conditions we have the ā€˜High Risk Pregnancyā€™ Clinic. We also have
fetal medicine experts who have the skill to accurately diagnose fetal
abnormalities in early pregnancy that can be followed up and therapy
decided at birth or even early intervention when the baby is still in the
motherā€™s uterus. There are doctors who have a program for womenā€™s
cancer risk prevention. Then again the menopausal clinic for the seniors
to live a life where they are active and can sustain on their own.
Process are validated for eļ¬€ectiveness and revalidated if any new
modality is introduced for better patient outcome. The hospital thus
has incorporated the clinical pathways for better patient outcome,
reduced hospital stay and also very minimal use of antibiotics. This
reduces the overall cost to the patient. Clinical pathways have also
ensured a degree of safety for patients. Early destarvation has resulted
in lesser use of antiemetic and also intravenous ļ¬‚uids.
The introduction of the system of integrated patient clinics has had a
great impact on patients. The coordinator in the department arranges
a meeting of the patient with a number of specialists together. Before
meeting the patient the doctors have already gone through the
detailed history and when they meet with the patient they are in a
position to tailor make a treatment plan for that one person. This make
the patient singularly well informed and at the same time they feel
involved with their own treatment as they now feel that they are also
an integral part of the team that is planning the therapy. This is a huge
conļ¬dence building measure for the patient. The hospital has over
50 service streams to render treatment. Those that have performed
remarkably well are Ophthalmology, Metabolic medicine including
Bariatric Surgery, Foot care and management, High Risk OPD for
Paediatric Evaluation and so on. The hospital has a social side too that
looks after the physically and mentally challenged.
The hospital was conļ¬dent that it was on the track that Chairman
Hiranandani would have wanted. Thus to determine how good that
quality was, we competed at the Ramkrishna Bajaj National Quality
Award (RBNQ) for the ļ¬rst time in the year 2008 and were declared
winners pan India. The next year, 2009, we went on to compete at
the International Asia Paciļ¬c Quality Award and were also the winners
there. This possibly for the ļ¬rst time a hospital from India had bagged
this prestigious award. There were other accolades that followed. The
hospital again marched ahead to be the winner of the RBNQ for the
year 2015. In a span of 12 years we have imprinted the stamp of quality
in healthcare across the country.
Even before the inaugural stone was laid on the foundations of Dr
L H Hiranandani Hospital, in the ļ¬rst ļ¬‚ush of the new millennium,
everyone associated with it could see that it was a more sublime aļ¬€air
than mere brick and mortar. And with very good reason. When a yet-
to-be-born hospital, -however swanky, however massive, - aspires to
mirror the long and illustrious career of a titan in the ļ¬eld, the usual
concerns of hospital management and business blue-printing are the
ļ¬rst to go out of the window.
One chooses the nobler and brighter options over practical and gainful
ones, choices that are worthy of the name it is founded on. And when it
is a tribute to an iconic father by his almost equally accomplished sons,
it even transcends the question of honour. It becomes an act of love.
Today we are proud to state that we are
one of the 4 hospitals to be associated with
the American Heart Association to be in
a collaborative study for the treatment of
hypertension in Asians.
Super ICU:
Such like work would not have been possible
with a strong Intensive Care Unit back up.
The hospital has the concept of aā€˜Super ICUā€™.
The unit is capable of monitoring any and
every parameter required to treat a seriously
ill patient. The unit follows the best air-
conditioning standards. This is benchmarked
against stringent standards. There are special
units to treat the patient with very serious
infection called the negative pressure room
and the positive pressure room for the
patient who has little resistance to infection.

Ganga Ram Trust Society established the ļ¬rst hospital in 1921 at Lahore, which is still
known as Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. In 1954, the Trust Society established a 50 - bed Sir
Ganga Ram Hospital at New Delhi. The Trust Society, in 1976 handed over the management
to the Board of Management, which comprised of eminent consultants from the hospital
itself. Through these turn of events, the Board of Management with its dynamic and visionary
leadership and guidance, and harmonious relationship with the Trust Society, directed the
hospital to reach its present eminence. At present, the 675-bedded tertiary care hospital
is equally known for quality and ethical healthcare and excellence in the ļ¬eld of medical
education and research. Sir Ganga Ram Hospital is now a role model for the National Board
of Examinations and provides postgraduate courses in 42 disciplines.

Education & Research (GRIPMER) in the year 2012. GRIPMER has
signed agreements with various governmental & non-governmental
organizations of India as well neighbouring countries to promote
research and capacity building in training medical professionals. Sir
Ganga Ram Hospital is a pioneer in establishing an excellent Medical
Genetics department that oļ¬€ers a Ph.D. program.
We have got several research projects being funded by important
national organizations like ICMR, DST, Department of Biotechnology
etc. and signiļ¬cant international organizations like UNICEF, WHO and
others. The hospital is recognized as a Scientiļ¬c and Industrial Research
Organisation (SIRO) by the Department of Scientiļ¬c & Industrial
Research since 2000. Sir Ganga Ram Trust Society is committed to
reach rural population at their doorsteps through our charity outreach
program and telemedicine, which has best consultants on board.
Brand Committment
Sir Ganga Ram Hospital is ļ¬rmly committed towards providing
excellent healthcare with passion and compassion while strictly
adhering to medical ethics. The hospital is devoted to impart
postgraduate medical education to doctors, producing dedicated
nurses and running structured para-medical courses to provide

Message from the Chairman, Board of Management
Serving this great institution for the last 38 years and being one of
the pioneers in establishing comprehensive nephrology, dialysis and
kidney transplantation services in the non-government sector, I feel
privileged to give back to the institution by serving Chairman of Board
of Management since 2011.
The hospital is

CORE VALUES
Sir Ganga Ram Hospital is a patient-friendly
hospital with aā€œPatient First Policyā€. It is
committed to holistic healthcare, cutting-
edge research and a training ground
for competent healthcare professionals.
State-of the-art technology has been the
hospitalā€™s key strength. We have been
the first in acquiring latest technologies
over last four decades. It is a doctor
and an employee-friendly hospital.The
management is transparent and open-
minded. Both service providers and service
takers have a sense of belonging
and are partners in the
growth of the hospital.
I believe that all tertiary care hospitals should endeavor to provide
quality and aļ¬€ordable healthcare at the doorsteps of rural India. The
Government should give land on lease to genuine NGOs and further
infrastructural support should come by India Inc as part of their CSR
activities. Tertiary care hospitals should further provide expertise of
their talented doctors and help in capacity building of these centres
to eventually make them self-sustainable.
The Medical Council of India should regulate the quality of medical
education and pay the pedagogy adequately. Besides, controlling the
price of life-saving drugs and promotion of generic drugs, the Drug
Controller should ensure quality.

Ballal, the Chairman of Manipal Health
Enterprises, adds, ā€œAt MEMG, the technology
initiatives provide the freedom to deliver new
pedagogic methods and systems of learning.ā€
Each of the skills imparted are extremely
relevant and welcomed in the corporate
sector, the advantage of wearing two hats -
the teacher and the business leader.
That said, Paiā€™s healthcare business is
also providing to be a sweet spot with
investors. Recently, Singaporeā€™s state-owned
investment company Temasek Holdings
bought out private equity investor True
Northā€™s entire 18% stake in the hospital chain
for `1,100 crore, valuing the Company at an
estimated $1 billion. Already an established
hospital network in South India, it was
inevitable that Manipal Health would eye
a pan-India expansion at some point. Dr
Ranjan Pai wants to entrench the Manipal
brand in healthcare, not just in India but also
in other countries. The Company already has
a network of 10 hospitals across India, with
4 hospitals managed and, additionally, has
one in Malaysia, and a clinic in Nigeriaā€”
with close to 6,500 beds, of which the city
of Bengaluru alone has 1,100 beds. Manipal
Health has now forayed into the north and
has a 300-bed multi-specialty hospital in
Jaipur, Rajasthan, and one in Dwarka, New
Delhi, with 450 beds.
Manipal Health has also built its business
around the tertiary-care model and is not
dependent on one particular specialization.
ā€œWe have centers of excellence and some
of the best doctors in the country - who are
leaders in their ļ¬elds, extremely competent
support staļ¬€ that delivers on global
standards, and skillful med-support.ā€ added
Dr. Ballal. The culture of social sustainability is
driving excellence in the healthcare brands.
The brandā€™s vision to provide aļ¬€ordable
healthcare comes from a deeply insightful
space. With a view to contribute a solution
to the inaccessibility of aļ¬€ordable healthcare
across the country, Manipal Health has
partnered with the Government of Indiaā€™s
initiative - Ayushman Bharat, a health
insurance cover of ` 5 lakhs per family, for 50
crore beneļ¬ciaries from below poverty levels,
constituting around 40% of the population,
forsecondaryandtertiarycarehospitalization.
also incubates start-ups aļ¬ƒliated to these
sectors.
However, the basic premise of all the
companies and institutions under the MEMG
umbrella stays the same today - a charter that
requires them to oļ¬€er socially relevant and
aļ¬€ordable services. But this was the basic
premise of Dr. TMA Paiā€™s vision, all along - his
ļ¬rm belief that if every person of our country
has access to good education and healthcare,
the person will have a good livelihood and
be a productive citizen. Interestingly, in the
1990s United Nations, deļ¬ned the eco-socio
development status of a country through
a ā€œhuman development indexā€, where two
of the three components of the index were
the education level and health status of its
people ā€“ a fact Dr. Pai recognized over half a
century ago.
The focus of MEMG is to contribute towards
creating human skill pools in the country
to support economic development by
setting up educational institutions. This
creation of skill pools has extended to other
countries too, especially in Malaysia and
Nepal. Over the years, Manipal graduates
in clinical, engineering, management and
other academic disciplines have contributed
signiļ¬cantly to the economic and industry
development in regions across India and in
countries overseas.
MEMG, today, is one of the foremost umbrella
institutions in India. It combines world
class skills development with sustainable
enterprise - and under the guidance of Dr.
Ranjan Pai, leverages technology to move
ahead with futuristic visions. Dr. H Sudarshan

good businessmen, some people have the ability to work for the society and also raise
successful, sprawling business enterprises. One of whom is the Bengaluru-based billionaire
entrepreneur Dr. Ranjan Pai who heads an Education and Healthcare empire in India.
The Pai family has been operating in the ļ¬eld of education for three generations as the Manipal
Education and Medical Group (MEMG). Padmashri Dr. Tonse Madhava Ananth Pai, Ranjanā€™s
grandfather, set up Indiaā€™s ļ¬rst private, self-ļ¬nanced medical college in 1953, in Manipal, in
the State of Karnataka. Over the years more colleges were set up in various disciplines and
in 1993 this institution was given a university status and became the Manipal Academy of
Higher Education (MAHE), which, recently, has been recognized by the Government of India as
an ā€œInstitution of Eminence. The educational institutions grew in leaps and bounds under the
leadership of Ranjanā€™s father, Padma Bhushan Dr Ramdas M Pai, who expanded the footprint
beyond Karnataka to set up universities and educational institutions in Sikkim and overseas in
Malaysia, Nepal, Dubai and Antigua.
Continuing with the strong legacy, Ranjan professionalized the operations and established

Says Dilip Jose, MD & CEO of Manipal Health Enterprises,ā€œWith plans to provide the best in class
primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare, we think that Ayushman Bharat is very relevant
initiative for our country. With 15 hospitals, including our teaching hospitals, and over 6000
beds, we can extend our support to geographies that are underserved in healthcare. While the
basic building blocks for aļ¬€ordable healthcare are in place, what is needed is a progressive and
proactive approach, backed by innovation, to healthcare delivery.ā€
Over the last few years, Dr Ranjan Pai has gained the reputation of being a patient investor who
has built a very focused yet diverse portfolio. His willingness to channel funds into startups that
focus on high-risk sectors such as life sciences and biotechnology where investor interest is
usually lowā€”has won him the admiration of peers and entrepreneurs.
Leveraging technologies like artiļ¬cial intelligence (AI), blockchain, and data analytics to provide
this support, is another of Dr. Paiā€™s vision for MEMG. Generating and using data to improve health
outcomes, maintain electronic health records and cloud storage and even consumer-facing
mobile apps, empower patients as well as healthcare providers to deliver much better service.
As Dr. Ballal, says,ā€œWe at Manipal Health are committed to providing a patient centric, clinically
excellent and an ethical-technology driven health care. We are also looking at a viable PPP
model to drive the exciting, yet challenging, universal health care mission of the Governmentā€™s

around mid-forties. Lack of awareness about disease symptoms,
early diagnosis contribute to late diagnosis, delayed treatment and
high mortality. Unnecessary Mastectomy (i.e, total breast removal) is
common practice which scares women from receiving appropriate
institutional treatment. Therefore, considering the growing BC burden
in India, OBHC has developed multi-pronged, high-impact, innovative
initiatives in the ļ¬ght against BC.
International Standards in BC Clinical Management
1) Advanced Breast Cancer Diagnostics
OBHC is equipped with sophisticated imaging modalities such as
Contrast Enhanced Digital Mammography with 3D Tomosynthesis
(ļ¬rst in India) and Automated Breast Volume Scanner. Precision biopsy
procedures with Vacuum-assisted Biopsy and Robotic arm-guided
Stereotactic biopsy are available at aļ¬€ordable rates.
2) Pioneering Breast Oncoplastic Surgery in India
BOS is a new paradigm that combines principles of BC surgery and
cosmetic surgery in the same sitting.Loss of breast via mutilating
surgeries can lead to psychological trauma and depression, thereby,
decreasing survival rates. BOS allows for tumor removal, breast
shape and size restoration and good cosmesis in a single surgery.
BOSpositively impactspatient psyche, self-esteem and body image
resulting is better quality of life.
Under the leadership of Dr. Koppiker, an international renowned
surgeon and itā€™s Medical Director, OBHC has pioneered BOS in India. At
OBHC, about 75% patients undergo breast saving BOS procedures. In
20%ofcasesthatabsolutelyrequiremastectomy,breastreconstruction
is performed in the same sitting in majority of cases. The rates of
total mastectomy are as low as 4%, perhaps, one of the lowest in the
world. In the past 5 years, OBHC team has performed over 1500 BOS
procedures with various innovative techniques.
Training
With an objective of reducing mastectomy rates in India by creating
a well-trained BOS work-force, OBHC and senior surgeons from the
University of East Anglia (UEA), UK have conducted hands-on training
workshops. Dr. Koppiker has been conferred with a faculty position
in the University of East Anglia, UK and the American School of
Oncoplastic Surgery.
In 2017, OBHC and UEA have jointly started an academic degree
program (M.Ch. in Breast Oncoplasty) which is the only course in
Asia oļ¬€ering cutting-edge BOS training (www.breastoncoplasty.
org). Over 50 surgeons from India and South East Asia (Sri Lanka,

OBHC Initiatives for Fight against Breast Cancer (BC)
in India
According to WHO, breast cancer is now the most common cancer
in India aļ¬€ecting all socio-economic strata of the society (1, 62,468
new BC cases diagnosed annually) with highest global mortality rate.
Majority of BCs in India are detected in young, premenopausal women
Indonesia, Maldives, Afghanistan, Bangladesh) have enrolled full-time
in the program while over 500 surgeons have been trained in various
workshops conducted all over India.
Translational Breast Cancer Research
Indian BC cancer proļ¬le is diļ¬€erent than other countries with reference
to its epidemiology, clinico-pathology as well as clinical management.
Unlike the west, majority Indian BC cases are diagnosed in advanced
stage and predominantly in young, premenopausal women. Triple
negative breast cancer (TNBC) is an aggressive and diļ¬ƒcult-to-treat
disease highly prevalent in Indian women. Hence, it is incorrect to
directly extrapolate research ļ¬ndings from western population in
treating Indian BC patients.
All leading international cancer hospitals (i.e., M.D. Anderson
Cancer Centre, Houston, USA, Institute of Cancer Research, London)
have established highly successful cancer research programs. On
similar themes, PCCM has joined hands with Indian Institute of
Science Education and Research (IISER), a premier national research
institute in Pune in 2017 to establish a Centre of Translational Cancer
Research (CTCR), supported by seed fund from Bajaj Auto Ltd. CTCR
has undertaken major BC themed-research relevant to Indian context
in the themes of public health, epidemiology, genetics, OBS, chemo-
radiation and psycho-oncology.
CTCRresearchagendaincludesunderstandingthemolecularbasis
of high prevalence of TNBCs in India population.Fruitful collaborations
with world-renowned breast cancer clinicians and researchers from
USA and UK have been established. UniqueTNBC genetic patterns and
molecular biomarkers have been identiļ¬ed that will be helpful to the
Indian onco-clinicians in better prevention, diagnosis and treatment.
CTCR has also undertaken major initiatives in capacity building of
cancer researchers by conducting novel training programs in research
methodology, molecular oncology, bioinformatics, preclinical and
clinical research. In September 2019, CTCR will be hosting the ļ¬rst-
ever conference in Indian based onā€˜The Cancer Genome Atlas ( TCGA)
which is worldā€™s largest open-source database for cancer research
funded by National Cancer Institute , USA.
Community Outreach
1. Sensitization
Based on WHO guidelines, OBHC conducts BC awareness campaigns
in Pune that sensitizes thousands of women in Pune annually.
ImportantBC-related information is provided in all languages to dispel
myths about the signs, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment aspects
with an emphasis on quality of life. In addition, regular symposia are
organized for the community to discuss breast cancer related issues
with experts. OBHC also organizes one of Puneā€™s largest breast cancer
awareness marathon (ā€˜Our Marathonā€™) with over 15,000 participants.
2. Screening
OBHC has created aClinical Breast Examination (CBE)-based screening
program in which women are examined by breast palpation
performed by well-trained para-medicals and medical social workers.
A mobile mammography project was created to screen women
(above 40 years) for breast abnormalities in which trained radiologists
examined the mammograms.In2016-17 over 50,000 women were
sensitized via awareness talks and 6500 women were screening
using CBE and mammography. The diagnosed cases identiļ¬ed via
this screening program were treated free of cost at OBHC.
3. Chemotherapy Corpus
With the help of generous donors, OBHC has also created a
chemotherapy corpus to provide free and concessional life-saving anti-
cancer drugs, including Herceptineto underprivileged patients (1238
concessional and 539 freeships amounting to over 2 Cr in FY 2018-19)
4. Patient Support
Rehabilitation is the most important arm of breast cancer requiring
signiļ¬cant support from family and friends, OBHC has created a
PINK -RIBBON support group which provides support to patients
and caregivers via organizing transport, babysitting, nutritional
programs, psychological counseling, picnics and get togethers.
These initiativesare spearheaded by Ms.LalehBusheri,(CEO, PCCM)
and members of the support group. The aforementioned high-
impact projects of PCCM and CTCR will receive a signiļ¬cant boost
with generous support from socially-conscious organizations and
individuals. Therefore, it is our earnest appeal to corporate houses,
high-net worth individuals, philanthropists and NGOs to join hands
with PCCM in the ļ¬ght against breast cancer in India by supporting
the ongoing and future activities; with the credo ā€œLosing is Not an
Option - Be it Hope, Breast or Lifeā€.

What is Stem Cell therapy and how does it help
patients with incurable neurological disorders?
Stem cells are specialized cells that can potentially convert into any type
of tissue under speciļ¬c physiological conditions, and have the ability
to repair damaged parts of our body. Stem cell therapy is a simple and
eļ¬€ective treatment and is 100% safe when autologous adult stem cells
are used. Statistics have shown that, after Stem cell therapy, overall
90% of patients with Autism have shown improvements in social
relationships, emotional responses, speech, communication, behavior
and hyperactivity. 77% of Stroke patients showed improved upper and
lower limb activity, 96% of patients with Spinal Cord Injury showed
better muscle tone, trunk activity, balance and other activities of daily
living. In Cerebral Palsy, 91% of treated patients showed improvement
in oromotor/speech functions, balance, and upper/lower limb activity.
In Muscular Dystrophy, which is a progressive disease of the muscles,
about 86% of the patients attain stabilization of their condition, along
with improved functionality.

When we did a detailed business ļ¬eld analysis
of the healthcare scenario, with particular
focus on the needs in India, we realized
that the healthcare needs of our country
are diverse. Though healthcare in India is a
necessity, it still comes packaged as a luxury
to the vast majority. We are burdened by
a combination of infectious diseases and
lifestyle diseases in our country. Innovative
solutions, unconventional business models
and unorthodox care delivery systems
would be the key drivers of healthcare.
Indian healthcare is on the cusp of a digital
transformation. Indiaā€™s digital connectivity is
poised to grow at an accelerated rate from 30
per cent in 2017 to 80 per cent in 2034, and is
driving the following trends:
a. Flipped care: Similar to most sectors
around the world, focus has shifted from
the provider to the patient. ā€œFlipped
health careā€ puts control in the hands
of patients, with the goal of improving
health and care delivery while also
reducing the cost.
b. Digital Health: This is a real game
changer. It is just not the App on the

T
echnology and in particular, the Internet of Things (IoT) is fundamentally changing all
facets of life, from how we live, work and get around - homes are becoming smarter,
factories more productive, and mobility is taking on a fundamentally new form. True to
its tagline,ā€œInvented for lifeā€, Bosch is constantly developing innovative Connected Products, with
an intention to make all aspects of life easier. One such area, where Bosch is looking at to make a
fundamental impact on human life is healthcare.
Robert Bosch Engineering and Business Solutions (RBEI), headquartered in India, was
incorporated as a software development center of Bosch in the year 1997. With currently over
20,000 associates, RBEI is a strategic partner powering Bosch Business divisions worldwide.
RBEI healthcare believes that the future is in ā€˜Connected worldā€™ inhabited by ā€˜Connected Lifeā€™
and aims to be a partner of choice to deliver IoT enabled innovative healthcare solutions for a
large scale, mass impact.ā€œWith a strong linking of our technology expertise in sensors, software
and services, RBEI healthcare is a preferred partner in the international marketplace and is
transforming the core nuggets of care deliveryā€says Guruprasad, VP Healthcare at RBEI.
mobile phone, but putting to use the computing power of
todayā€™s smart phones for delivering Point of Care diagnosis and
last mile connectivity.
c. Front line innovations: Low-cost portable innovations to cater to
the needs of our vast rural population will help increase access by
providing Point of Care diagnostics, tele and remote consultations.
We strongly believe that device manufacturers must move beyond
product centric business models and use patient-oriented service
design (like a smart IoT enabled platform) to create comprehensive
healthcare experiences.
Bosch Healthcare leverages its precision engineering and state-of-
the-art technology in Internet of Things (IoT), sensor technology and
Social Mobility Analytics Cloud (SMAC), to promote innovation in a
patient-centric healthcare delivery model. This is exactly how we have
been enabling medical device companies to transform care delivery.
We see the following three pivots that would be
major tenets for this change in the medical field:
1. People: With increasing consumerism, patients are at the driverā€™s
seat, and will be in the center of the entire healthcare ecosystem.
2. Data: Data will be one of the strongest buzzwords in the
years to come. Electronic Health Records (EHRs) will become
Comprehensive Health Records (CHRs) to accommodate data
from many sources including remote health care data and social
determinants of healthcare.
3. Technology: Emerging technologies like AI, cognitive, machine
learning will unlock the value of data, and open source
technologies like block chain (distributed ledger technology), will
help to address the challenges related to security and privacy.
The last point ā€“ ā€˜technologyā€™ is at the heart of change right now.
With the advancement of technology there is a conscious demand
for better engagement and quality services in the healthcare sector.
Customers anticipate intuitive, smart interactions as opposed to the
traditional models of care delivery. Care delivery is also undergoing
changes with the primary focus being on providing value-based
services. With the help of emerging technologies, there is an
increasing shift from traditional to ā€˜smartā€™.
In India especially, technology can play a key enabler in improving the
healthcare scenario in the rural sector. We are already working on rural
healthcare delivery solutions to address the critical needs of the same.
I would like to highlight a few of the most pressing
issues we are dealing with:
Lack of trained medical professionals at Point of Care
Lack of early diagnosis that helps avoid medical complications
Aļ¬€ordable and accessible healthcare that does not impact the
daily livelihood
With technology advancements, we can also continuously monitor
and ļ¬‚ag critical alerts, and thus ensure pro-active, quality care is
provided at the right time, thereby reducing the pressure on the
current clinical set-up. A connected health ecosystem with the
key tenets of smart, personalized, portable and virtual, can aid the
improvement in focus on preventive, diagnostics and wellness, and
reduce the load on therapeutic in the entire spectrum of care.
All appropriate investments in terms of innovation funding,
partnerships with external associations like NATHEALTH, global
research universities and other ecosystem partners, are being made.
Intellectual property in the form of Patents, as well as various thought
leadership publications like White Papers and Blogs have been
continuously generated. We have won many laurels like the Edison
award, HIMSS Asia paciļ¬c award to name a few.
We can use technology as a key enabler to promote better health, lower
costs and ensure last mile connectivity. Bosch technology is designed to
fascinate, as well as to improve quality of life. Bosch believes that we can
make a diļ¬€erence to the ļ¬eld of Healthcare in India.

greatest scientific achievements which can change human life will
not be from the field of space science or computer science but will
be from regenerative medicine. Dr. Mahajan strives towards finding
scientific breakthrough technologies that was never imagined.
The ongoing discovery of cell-based therapy has given rise to a
new alternative treatment protocol. Regenerative medicine has
shifted our clinical goal from repair to regeneration. Regenerative
medicine is truly revolutionizing the field of medicine through
autologous therapy using cells and growth factors to address the
root cause of the disease. With this goal, the concept has expanded
to a variety of other applications such as Tissue engineering and
Genetic medicine. Future goals should be towards use of stem cell
rich blood from the umbilical cord as a key element in achieving
regeneration. These clinical goals can provide long-term cures to
previously untreatable injuries and diseases.
We cannot solve the problem by using
the same kind of thinking we used
when we created them.
INNOVATIVE HEADWAYS:
Regenerative Medicine is breaking the
barriers for treatment of diseases for a
variety of reasons- it leads to repopulation
of healthy cell pools, regenerates tissues,
boosts immunity, rejuvenates organs, and
improves the quality of life. Regenerative
Medicine exclusively supports all avenues
that lead to the replacement or regeneration
of human cells, tissue or organs, to restore
or establish normal function. The sector is
rapidly evolving and multidisciplinary in
nature. The field of regenerative medicine is
promising and can be explored to augment
organ function, repair, and even regenerate
by utilizing the bodyā€™s own repair and healing
mechanisms. One may say that the
body is converted into a natural
reactor to heal itself.

Care24 was started in 2014 by IIT Kanpur alumni Vipin Pathak and
Garima Tripathi. Starting as a personal need to get better care for
their own parents, the team decided to start reliable medical services
at home in Mumbai and expand to other cities. The need for a nurse
for simple blood pressure check or injections is diļ¬ƒcult for children
who either have to take oļ¬€ from work to visit hospitals or rely on
local agencies. The local agencies have no reliability or quality check
on services. Care24 started solving this basic need of a qualiļ¬ed
medical professional who could provide standard services at home.
Research has proven that patients can recover faster (20-30%) due
to higher comfort at home and reduce hospital readmission by 27%.
Background veriļ¬cation, medical and soft skill training and a very
strong technology foundation has helped us deliver quality care at
home. We have been able to signiļ¬cantly increase care providers
income with more work and higher salaries.

an organized and regulated industry. World home healthcare market
is expected to reach $349.8 billion by 2020 from $227.5 billion in
2015 growing 9% annually. In India the market size is roughly $4
billion with ancillary markets about $20 billion. With increasing
nuclear families and growing elderly population in metros, there is a
huge gap between the demand and available solutions.
We are determined to bring quality and standardization in this
sector. Care24 now serves 1200 patients every day. Today, we have
over 2000 active medical caregivers and the company has helped
over 50,000 families recuperate in the comfort of their homes.
The quality of delivered services has made us the trusted brand for
home healthcare both for the customers and caregivers. We take
pride in the fact that more than 70% of our caregivers are hired
through referral program showing high levels of trust placed in us
by our caregivers. Similarly 50% of our customer come from referral
from families we have served in past. The biggest challenge that a
customer faces today is lack of reliable care partner when they need
the most. We ensure guaranteed service and faster resolution using
technology and trained staļ¬€.
Through our technology and supervision every patient service and
recovery is monitored from timely start, feedback, recovery, query
resolution from the consumer, patients and caregivers.
We have achieved this trust by investing in upskilling the caregiver
and through eļ¬€ective use of technology. Customer and caregiver
have mobile application to keep track of the services.
Every caregiver also gets a bank account and this has brought
ļ¬nancial inclusion to more than 5000 providers who were left out of

more cities without adding a lot of overheads and hence providing
aļ¬€ordable care to more families.
Care24 is looking to expand its services to five more
cities in the next 12 months.
The prospective cities are Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata
and Pune. The elderly population is expected to grow to 325 million
from current 100 million. The need for condition management
for chronic diseases, cardiovascular and cancer is exponentially
increasing and the in-home healthcare for the aged is becoming
a necessity. Insurance, Hospitals, Pharma and other healthcare
players are keen to partner with Homecare companies to reduce
LOS (length of stay) in hospital, increase hospital capacity to service
critical patients and improve overall health of patients.
Care24 is also looking at speciļ¬c areas such as specialised medical
delivery, providing complete care, diagnostic and medical
equipment services. We aim to serve 3000 patients per day from
the current 1,200 per day over the 12 months.
The biggest challenge in homecare is the lack of
trained staff.
The company plans to train 10000 healthcare professionals for
elderly care and specialised treatments such as cancer care and
neurological care in association with specialised agencies such as
NSDC, AIIMS and Tata Memorial, among others. We believe that
skilling and training is the only way forward for creating the right
kind of talent pool for the healthcare industry. With the use of our
large network, we aim to lead in this market by creating technology
and supply pool that can serve the industry in the coming decade.
Care24 platform has helped attendants and nurses build their own

  • 3. 4 FORBES INDIA MARQUEE . LEADERS IN HEALTHCARE 3,19,780 people, indicating bright career opportunities. In fact, the contributions of internationally credible education and training centres and programmes such as Hiranandani Orthopaedic Medical Education and Manipal Education and Medical Group are unparalleled. This can be attributed to a number of growth drivers such as infrastructural investment, which, according to Invest India, is expected to be $200 billion by 2024. Improved life expectancy, as well as rising disposable income and increased insurance penetration, are other factors. Reduced costs due to greater eļ¬ƒciency facilitated by technology particularly robotic process automation and rise in health and wellness centres are also contributing to the growth of Indiaā€™s shining healthcare industry. Robotic and computer assisted therapy is also used at rehabilitationcentressuchasJupiterHospitalā€™s neuro-rehabilitation centre, which is also home to Asiaā€™s ļ¬rst aquatic rehabilitation pool. With the governmentā€™s prerogative to roll- out the worldā€™s largest government-funded healthcare programme, the importance of providing quality, aļ¬€ordable and accessible healthcare will continue to be the key parameter for economic success. In this supplement, we proļ¬le changemakers and trendsetters in Indian healthcare. They highlight the latest advancements in the sector and the challenges that lie ahead, as well as share their road maps for a promising future. Indiaā€™s Dynamic Healthcare Sector India has come a long way from the smallpox epidemic in 1974. Of course, there have been newer challenges such as the swine u of 1 and the ipah virus outbrea in erala in 1 but that only proves how advanced our medical research is. According to Invest India, the healthcare information technology market is expected to grow 1.5 times from the current $1billion by 2020. Medical technology plays an important role not just in terms of diagnostics and surgical procedures but also support functions such as R&D and medical informatics. Smart Healthcare Telemedicine or telehealth is fast catching up. Video conferencing, for instance, saves time and money. m-health (mobile health) and e-health are fast catching up too and there several mobile applications for mental health, weight loss, chronic care management and more. Applications that identify potential health threats and examine digital information also exist. Telemonitoring technology has increased mobility, enabling doctors to monitor vital signs and symptoms remotely. In India, the home healthcare market size is roughly $4 billion with ancillary markets about $20 billion. The concept of medical tourism is also ļ¬‚ourishing and expected to grow to $9 billion by 2020. Scientists have been able to examine diseases on a cellular level and produce antibodies against them. Stem cell therapy has revolutionised the care of autistic patients, as well as those suļ¬€ering from strokes, spinal cord injuries, muscular dystrophy and cerebral palsy. There are numerous surgeries which are being carried out without opening the body. Laser operations, for instance. In fact, minimally-invasive surgeries such as transcatheter therapies are allowing patients to spend less time in recovery. The new technologies of today even allow doctors to ļ¬nd out an increasing amount of detailed information about both, the progression and treatment of disease, and oļ¬€er personalised treatment based on a patientā€™s genes. The system of integrated patient clinics has had a great impact where the patient meets with many specialists together. Before the meeting, the doctors can access the patientā€™s detailed history. A Promising Future The value of Indiaā€™s healthcare sector may increase to $372 billion by 2022 according to Invest India. By 2020, India is expected to rank among the top three healthcare markets in terms of incremental growth. In 2017, the industry stood as the fourth largest employer, employing In India, the home healthcare market size is roughly $4 billion with ancillary markets about $20 billion. The concept of medical tourism is also ļ¬‚ourishing and expected to grow to $9 billion by 2020. FORBES INDIA MARQUEE . • 4. 6 FORBES INDIA MARQUEE . LEADERS IN HEALTHCARE FORBES INDIA MARQUEE . LEADERS IN HEALTHCARE 7 Ms. Suneeta Reddy, Managing Director, Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Ltd. Dr. Preetha Reddy, Vice Chairperson, Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Ltd. 6 FORBES INDIA MARQUEE . LEADERS ratiļ¬es Apollo Hospitalsā€™ position as the leader in Indian healthcare industry. Apollo Hospitals is today at the forefront of the Technological Renaissance in healthcare. Leading from the front, Apollo Hospitals has ensured that the best of medical advances and technology are made available to the patients in India, making available world class healthcare at a fraction of the cost as compared to other countries across the globe. Cardiovascular diseases and Cancer are the two main NCDs responsible for premature mortality in India today, and along with chronic respiratory disease and diabetes, the probability of dying from these four NCDs is 26%! NCDs today account for 61% of total deaths in India and with the vision and dedication to reduce these numbers, Apollo Hospitals is the bulwark against the tsunami of Non- communicable diseases (NCDs) that the country faces today. Cardiovascular diseases including coronary heart disease, stroke, and hypertension contribute to over 45% of all deaths from NCDs. Heart problems can be diagnosed early, managed well and treated completely in most cases and it is here that Apollo Hospitals has redeļ¬nedā€˜Heart Careā€™in the country. Pioneering cardiac surgery with the repair of an Atrial Septal defect in 1983, today, the Apollo Heart Institutes oļ¬€er a multitude of treatments and procedures in cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery at centres across the country. Apollo Hospitalsā€™ healing touch has helped patients with an unmatched record of over 1,52,000 cardiac and cardiothoracic surgeries, one of only 10 hospitals in the world to achieve these volumes. Apollo Hospitalsā€™ journey in cardiac care has seen multiple ļ¬rsts including Coronary Artery Stenting for the ļ¬rst time in India, the ļ¬rst keyhole multiple bypass surgery and the ļ¬rst heart transplant in India. Today, Apollo Hospitalsā€™ prowess in cardiac care is backed by the largest cohort of cases treated with advanced cardiac interventional methods. These include three key innovations ā€“ MitraClip, TAVI (Trans- catheter AorticValve Implantation) orTAVR (Trans-catheter AorticValve Replacement) and MICS CABG or MICAS (Minimally Invasive Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery). Specialists in structural and interventional cardiology at Apollo Hopsitals have successfully performed 6 MitraClip procedures out of the 9 performed in India, over 85 TAVI/TAVRs with Apollo Hospitals- Bulwark Against TheNCDTsunami! The state-of-the-art Apollo Proton Cancer Centre APCC in outh ast Asia rst of its ind opened earlier this year, rati es Apollo Hospitalsā€™ position as the leader in Indian healthcare industry. A renowned cardiologist known for his intuitive diagnostic abilities, Dr. Prathap Reddy was just turning 50 when he launched Apollo Hospitals and in the process revolutionised healthcare in India. Thirty-six years later, with more than 32 million people treated, the Apollo Hospitals group has become one of the worldā€™s leading centres for quaternary healthcare including cardiac surgery, oncology, organ transplants (Heart, Lung, Liver, Pancreas, Intestine and Kidney), bone marrow transplants, liver disease, joint replacement and robotic surgery. Today, Apollo Hospitals is renowned for delivering cutting-edge healthcare embellished with a human touch at par with the best centres in the world. The state-of-the-art Apollo Proton Cancer Centre (APCC) in South East Asia ā€“ ļ¬rst of its kind ā€“ opened earlier this year, excellent clinical outcomes and a nation-leading 1250+ MICS CABGs with superior outcomes at par with international standards, at only half or one third of the cost compared to global price matrix. Cancer is the second leading cause of death globally and according to the World health Organization, 1 in 6 deaths globally in 2018 was due to cancer. Apollo began its ļ¬ght against cancer in 1993 with a dedicated state-of-the-art facility for cancer care in Chennai. Apollo has made signiļ¬cant advances in treating this dreaded disease and has been leading from the frontline in the war on cancer by setting up South East Asiaā€™s ļ¬rst proton therapy centre for cancer, the Apollo Proton Cancer Centre (APCC) launched earlier this year, which serves over3.5 billion people across South East Asia. The clinical advantages of proton therapy as compared to conventional radiation therapy are many, with more than 2,00,000 patients successfully treated worldwide. Proton beam therapy takes the ļ¬ght to cancer with increased precision and greater dose delivery at the precise site of the cancer, minimizing damage to healthy tissue, better quality of life and a higher cure rate. This ultimately results in better results with fewer short and long-term side eļ¬€ects. But even prior to the launch of the APCC, Apollo Hospitals has always been quick to adopt new technology to help advance treatment for cancer. From the ļ¬rst Cyberknife Robotic Radio Surgery SystemtotheTrueBeamSTxstereotaticradiosurgery system, Apollo empowered its doctors to oļ¬€er patients with cancer, a non-invasive alternative to traditional surgery. Cancer specialists at Apollo Hospitals can use the most advanced TrueBeam STx system, which is the fastest in treatment speed, precision and simplicity to accurately target tumors of the brain, spine, lung and other areas that are typically diļ¬ƒcult to treat surgically. Apollo Cancer Institutesā€™ unique approach to diagnosing, treating and monitoring cancer powered by specialized expert organ-speciļ¬c tumor boards that discuss diagnostics and therapy options to provide the most beneļ¬cial and eļ¬€ective treatment to thousands of patients. As technology has evolved rapidly over the last two decades, Apollo Hospitals has also been at the forefront in adopting Artiļ¬cial Intelligence (AI) to bring a paradigm shift to the practice of medicine with tools designed to equip doctors in the ļ¬ght against the rising burden of NCDs, especially cardiology, cancer and neurology. Apollo Hospitalsā€™ Intelligent Platform ā€“ designed in collaboration with Microsoft ā€“ helps to predict cardiovascular disease risk score in the Indian population. Doctors across the Apollo network of hospitals are today leveraging this AI-powered API to predict risk of CVD and drive preventive cardiac care across the country. Combining Applied AI and clinical expertise, many other platforms are being developed for other NCDs that include Adult diabetes care pathway, Hypertension treatment and control pathway, cholesterol management in cardiovascular risk pathway, and prevention of stroke and CVA. The future will see AI playing a major part at Apollo Hospitals in prediction and monitoring of disease while empowering physicians with the power of data to make superior clinical decisions. Dr. Prathap C. Reddy Founder, Chairman Apollo Hospital Group Ms. Sangita Reddy, Joint Managing Director, Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Ltd. She underwent a successful bone marrow transplant for the condition and became the ļ¬rst teen in Asia suļ¬€ering from this complex condition to receive this particular treatment. Globally, less than 10 such cases have been successfully transplanted. Aster Medcity Hospital is another example of the companyā€™s high quality and personalised medical care commitment. A 670-bed multi-specialty quaternary care facility with 10 dedicated Centres of Excellence, it is the ļ¬rst quaternary care hospital in Kerala to have achieved the coveted JCI (Joint Commission International) Accreditation ā€“ the gold standard in global healthcare and is considered a focal destination for healthcare tourism from across the world. T he healthcare market is India is expected to reach US$ 372 billion by 2022, while the hospitals industry is expected to grow at a CAGR of 16-17% to reach Rs. 8.66 trillion by FY22. This growth will be primarily driven by rising incomes, better health awareness, growing incidence of lifestyle diseases and improving access to health insurance. With the governmentā€™s prerogative to roll-out the worldā€™s largest government-funded healthcare programme, the importance of providing quality healthcare that is aļ¬€ordable and accessible will continue to be the key parameter for economic success. At Aster DM Healthcare, the universal healthcare philosophy of Quality, Aļ¬€ordability and Accessibility for all was ingrained in the company, since its inception in 1987 in the UAE. Starting from a single clinic in Bur Dubai, to becoming a globally integrated healthcare conglomerate with 24 hospitals, 114 clinics and 219 pharmacies across nine countries, Aster DM Healthcare has over the last 15 years grown from strength to strength providing quality care through its network of 12 hospitals and eight clinics in India. Today, it is the third largest healthcare provider in India by market capex. The company commenced its India operations in 2001 with the establishment of the Malabar Institute of Medical Science in Calicut (Aster MIMS), Kerala, which oļ¬€ers end-to-end care across primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary healthcare. Within its global network, Aster and transcatheter aortic valve implantations (TAVI), which have set the benchmark for clinical excellence in the region. Aster MIMS Hospital in Kottakal, DM WIMS in Wayanand and the recently introduced 300 bedded Aster MIMS Hospital in Kannur are some of the other facilities in Kerala. Aster has been recognised by the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecologists (RCOG) for its international programme accreditation for Core Medical Training (CMT). Aster Medcity in Kerala and Aster Hospital at Mankhool in Dubai UAE will be the second in the world after Iceland to deliver CMT outside the UK. Aster Medcity has also signed an MOU with theThomas Jeļ¬€erson University, USA to provide its doctors with access to global knowledge, research and best practices. The ļ¬rst collaboration to be initiated is a multi-organ transplant programme. As one of the top healthcare service providers in India, Aster DM Healthcare continues to push the boundaries of healthcare excellence and provide compassionate care to people across geographies. Q&A with Dr. Azad Moopen- Founder Chairman and Managing Director, Aster DM Healthcare A single clinic in 1987, to a chain of hospitals present in multiple countries. Please share your inspiring entrepreneurial journey till now. When we started Aster DM Healthcare as a single doctor clinic in Dubai in 1987, we wanted to provide aļ¬€ordable quality healthcare services to people. Over the last three decades, our eļ¬€orts have seen us expanding our oļ¬€ering beyond Dubai, to other GCC countries and India. We operate now in 9 countries with 24 hospitals, 114 Clinics and 219 Pharmacies. We commenced our India operations in 2001 with the establishment of the Malabar Institute of Medical Science (Aster MIMS) in Calicut, Kerala and currently we have 12 hospitals and 8 clinics in India with a total bed capacity of 4400. We see India as a growth market and with this thought we listed our company in India in February 2018. Aster DM Healthcare recently completed a year of listing in India. How has the one year journey been? Also, what is your strategy and focus for Indian market? We see India as a growth market. With 12 hospitals in India, we are now looking at expanding our presence through organic growth and acquisitions. We would like to further consolidate our presence in South and Western India. Our model is to have large hospitals with 300-500 beds in major cities. If any opportunity comes up in the North which is suited to our business model, then we can consider. We prefer asset-light model where the land and building are either on long-term lease hold or O&M.We can also look for inorganic growth through acquisitions if the valuations are reasonable. Presently, 17% of our revenues come from India and our aim is to increase the ļ¬gure to 25% revenue from India in the next few years. Considering the current demand for quality healthcare, India is a focus market for us where we have 4,400 beds and have plans to take it up to 6,000 beds through 3 hospitals which are in the pipeline: Bengaluru, Chennai and Thiruvananthapuram. For this, we have plans to invest upto Rs750 crore by 2022. You aim to be a global health service provider. What differentiates you from other healthcare service providers? We are diļ¬€erent from other healthcare service providers as we provide complete specialties of services from primary to quaternary care through the network of clinics, hospitals and pharmacies. We do everything from primary consultation to cardiology transplantations in our hospitals. Another diļ¬€erentiating feature is that we have 3 separate brands in GCC catering to the upper, middle and lower-income groups called Medcare, Aster and Access. At some point of time in future we would like to expand it to other countries including India. Another very important point which diļ¬€erentiates us from other healthcare providers is our major involvement in academics with an intake of nearly 1000 students every year which helps us to have a pipeline of medical professionals. One of the most important diļ¬€erential features is Aster Volunteers which is the CSR arm of Aster providing service to large number of people every year in India. We believe that God has given us health and wealth, part of which has to be given back free of cost to needy people. Dr. Azad Moopen Founder Chairman and Managing Director, Aster DM Healthcare

LEADERS IN HEALTHCARE 11 not get into the syndrome of Chronic Heart Failure that may leave them without many options or commonly unaļ¬€ordable treatment options. Fame spread, the US FDA chose us as the only hospital in Asia to be part of US FDA global study for the Robotic arm to be used in Angioplasty. Today the department is recognized as a centre of excellence. The hospital was the ļ¬rst in the country to utilize the Bio absorbable stent. The department handles complicated procedures as total chronic occlusion (CTO). Our Cardiologist is invited internationally to showcase these acquired skills. This unit is now proctoring oļ¬€shore Cardiologists. Reversal of dominance and a red letter day for the hospital, city and India!! Today we are proud to state that we are one of the 4 hospitals to be associated with the American Heart Association to be in a collaborative study for the treatment of hypertension in Asians. Hiranandani Orthopaedic Medical Education The hospital marched ahead in the ļ¬eld of Orthopaedics. We were the pioneers in computer navigation surgery in the city. We devised protocols for patient safety that have gained International recognition and is published in leading Orthopaedic Journals. This has resulted in a dramatic decrease in post-operative complications. Also using the computer navigation in most cases has given ļ¬ne results as cases performed in 2004 are being followed up in the hospital and they are without any symptom. This is an outstanding achievement as the incidence of revision surgery increases after the ļ¬rst decade. The department went into using platelet rich plasma for chronic ligament and joint paint with outstanding results. Many a sportsperson has beneļ¬tted from this therapy. Our Postgraduate teaching program was developed under Hiranandani Orthopaedic Medical Education (HOME). Our work has gained us recognition as being an Orthopaedic training centre by SICOT (Societe Internationaale de Chirurgie Orthopedique et de Traumatologie or the International Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology). Many a young orthopod has crossed these portals. The department has evolved into a comprehensive centre that Dr L H Hiranandani Hospital Laboratory The National Accreditation For All Its Services FROM GETTINGTHE ISO CERTIFICATION IN 2006THE HOSPITALTOOKTHE GIANT STEP IN 2007TO GETTHE NABH ACCREDITATION FROMTHE QUALITY COUNCIL OF INDIA. I naugurated on the 22nd of February, 2004, the Dr L H Hiranandani Hospital is located in the picturesque Hiranandani Gardens at Powai. Armed with the mission of ā€˜Being the preferred choice for healing and good healthā€™, the hospital set about its task of engaging in rendering quality of care. And with very good reason, the hospital aspired to mirror the long and illustrious career of a titan in the ļ¬eld of medicine in general and ENT in particular ā€“ Padmabhushan Dr L H Hiranandani. From getting the ISO certiļ¬cation in 2006 the hospital took the giant step in 2007 to get the NABH accreditation from the Quality Council of India. This was a ļ¬rst not only in the city of Mumbai but also in the Western region of India!!Thus not a single act of our hospital coming into being remained mundane. The hospital marched on to get its Laboratory the National accreditation for all its services (NABL) in 2008 and then marched on to even have the Blood Bank get the NABH accreditation in 2011. The hospital has aspired for excellent Nursing and this led us to also the Nurses to be recognized by the Quality Council with Nursing Excellence in March 2016. We thus gave meaning to standardization in healthcare as the hospital has reļ¬ned process that are followed. While quality has been the cornerstone of this dynamic outļ¬t, professionally too we were well recognized. Arguably ours was the ļ¬rst hospital to popularize and propagate Primary Angioplasty in Myocardial Infarction (PAMI) and we not only saved lives but have also ensured those aļ¬„icted do not have myocardial damage! This certainly means that they will renders all forms of orthopaedic treatment, from joint replacement, spine surgery, orthopaedic surgery, sports injury therapy and all this encompassed with a sound physical rehabilitation centre that can take care of each need right from removing pain to restoring strength. Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology The greatest joy that a family experiences is to welcome a new member in its midst. Thus delivering the happiness quotient has been the ā€˜True Northā€™for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Not only was the department able to deliver this happiness, but soon turned into a centre of excellence that could oļ¬€er treatment for the woman from ā€˜womb to tombā€™. Today the department has a diversiļ¬ed into many specialized clinics. They are ā€“ Pre pregnancy counseling, Infertility (Male and Female) or Human reproduction ā€“ The department also leads in all techniques related to human reproduction with benchmarked results. The equipment to deliver this sort of excellence is sourced from leading vendors and with the expertise existing the results had to be extraordinary. Surgical excellence has been the core competence in the department. Today we perform the trueā€˜Stitch lessā€™vaginal surgery for operations that are generally performed by the abdominal route. Minimal access surgery is performed using all the available techniques in the world. Pregnancy may be complicated and to address such conditions we have the ā€˜High Risk Pregnancyā€™ Clinic. We also have fetal medicine experts who have the skill to accurately diagnose fetal abnormalities in early pregnancy that can be followed up and therapy decided at birth or even early intervention when the baby is still in the motherā€™s uterus. There are doctors who have a program for womenā€™s cancer risk prevention. Then again the menopausal clinic for the seniors to live a life where they are active and can sustain on their own. Process are validated for eļ¬€ectiveness and revalidated if any new modality is introduced for better patient outcome. The hospital thus has incorporated the clinical pathways for better patient outcome, reduced hospital stay and also very minimal use of antibiotics. This reduces the overall cost to the patient. Clinical pathways have also ensured a degree of safety for patients. Early destarvation has resulted in lesser use of antiemetic and also intravenous ļ¬‚uids. The introduction of the system of integrated patient clinics has had a great impact on patients. The coordinator in the department arranges a meeting of the patient with a number of specialists together. Before meeting the patient the doctors have already gone through the detailed history and when they meet with the patient they are in a position to tailor make a treatment plan for that one person. This make the patient singularly well informed and at the same time they feel involved with their own treatment as they now feel that they are also an integral part of the team that is planning the therapy. This is a huge conļ¬dence building measure for the patient. The hospital has over 50 service streams to render treatment. Those that have performed remarkably well are Ophthalmology, Metabolic medicine including Bariatric Surgery, Foot care and management, High Risk OPD for Paediatric Evaluation and so on. The hospital has a social side too that looks after the physically and mentally challenged. The hospital was conļ¬dent that it was on the track that Chairman Hiranandani would have wanted. Thus to determine how good that quality was, we competed at the Ramkrishna Bajaj National Quality Award (RBNQ) for the ļ¬rst time in the year 2008 and were declared winners pan India. The next year, 2009, we went on to compete at the International Asia Paciļ¬c Quality Award and were also the winners there. This possibly for the ļ¬rst time a hospital from India had bagged this prestigious award. There were other accolades that followed. The hospital again marched ahead to be the winner of the RBNQ for the year 2015. In a span of 12 years we have imprinted the stamp of quality in healthcare across the country. Even before the inaugural stone was laid on the foundations of Dr L H Hiranandani Hospital, in the ļ¬rst ļ¬‚ush of the new millennium, everyone associated with it could see that it was a more sublime aļ¬€air than mere brick and mortar. And with very good reason. When a yet- to-be-born hospital, -however swanky, however massive, - aspires to mirror the long and illustrious career of a titan in the ļ¬eld, the usual concerns of hospital management and business blue-printing are the ļ¬rst to go out of the window. One chooses the nobler and brighter options over practical and gainful ones, choices that are worthy of the name it is founded on. And when it is a tribute to an iconic father by his almost equally accomplished sons, it even transcends the question of honour. It becomes an act of love. Today we are proud to state that we are one of the 4 hospitals to be associated with the American Heart Association to be in a collaborative study for the treatment of hypertension in Asians. Super ICU: Such like work would not have been possible with a strong Intensive Care Unit back up. The hospital has the concept of aā€˜Super ICUā€™. The unit is capable of monitoring any and every parameter required to treat a seriously ill patient. The unit follows the best air- conditioning standards. This is benchmarked against stringent standards. There are special units to treat the patient with very serious infection called the negative pressure room and the positive pressure room for the patient who has little resistance to infection. This unit is monitored by a large team of full time Intensive care experts. Dr L H Hiranandani Hospital

  • 8. 14 FORBES INDIA MARQUEE . LEADERS IN HEALTHCARE FORBES INDIA MARQUEE . LEADERS IN HEALTHCARE 15 Ballal, the Chairman of Manipal Health Enterprises, adds, ā€œAt MEMG, the technology initiatives provide the freedom to deliver new pedagogic methods and systems of learning.ā€ Each of the skills imparted are extremely relevant and welcomed in the corporate sector, the advantage of wearing two hats - the teacher and the business leader. That said, Paiā€™s healthcare business is also providing to be a sweet spot with investors. Recently, Singaporeā€™s state-owned investment company Temasek Holdings bought out private equity investor True Northā€™s entire 18% stake in the hospital chain for `1,100 crore, valuing the Company at an estimated $1 billion. Already an established hospital network in South India, it was inevitable that Manipal Health would eye a pan-India expansion at some point. Dr Ranjan Pai wants to entrench the Manipal brand in healthcare, not just in India but also in other countries. The Company already has a network of 10 hospitals across India, with 4 hospitals managed and, additionally, has one in Malaysia, and a clinic in Nigeriaā€” with close to 6,500 beds, of which the city of Bengaluru alone has 1,100 beds. Manipal Health has now forayed into the north and has a 300-bed multi-specialty hospital in Jaipur, Rajasthan, and one in Dwarka, New Delhi, with 450 beds. Manipal Health has also built its business around the tertiary-care model and is not dependent on one particular specialization. ā€œWe have centers of excellence and some of the best doctors in the country - who are leaders in their ļ¬elds, extremely competent support staļ¬€ that delivers on global standards, and skillful med-support.ā€ added Dr. Ballal. The culture of social sustainability is driving excellence in the healthcare brands. The brandā€™s vision to provide aļ¬€ordable healthcare comes from a deeply insightful space. With a view to contribute a solution to the inaccessibility of aļ¬€ordable healthcare across the country, Manipal Health has partnered with the Government of Indiaā€™s initiative - Ayushman Bharat, a health insurance cover of ` 5 lakhs per family, for 50 crore beneļ¬ciaries from below poverty levels, constituting around 40% of the population, forsecondaryandtertiarycarehospitalization. also incubates start-ups aļ¬ƒliated to these sectors. However, the basic premise of all the companies and institutions under the MEMG umbrella stays the same today - a charter that requires them to oļ¬€er socially relevant and aļ¬€ordable services. But this was the basic premise of Dr. TMA Paiā€™s vision, all along - his ļ¬rm belief that if every person of our country has access to good education and healthcare, the person will have a good livelihood and be a productive citizen. Interestingly, in the 1990s United Nations, deļ¬ned the eco-socio development status of a country through a ā€œhuman development indexā€, where two of the three components of the index were the education level and health status of its people ā€“ a fact Dr. Pai recognized over half a century ago. The focus of MEMG is to contribute towards creating human skill pools in the country to support economic development by setting up educational institutions. This creation of skill pools has extended to other countries too, especially in Malaysia and Nepal. Over the years, Manipal graduates in clinical, engineering, management and other academic disciplines have contributed signiļ¬cantly to the economic and industry development in regions across India and in countries overseas. MEMG, today, is one of the foremost umbrella institutions in India. It combines world class skills development with sustainable enterprise - and under the guidance of Dr. Ranjan Pai, leverages technology to move ahead with futuristic visions. Dr. H Sudarshan The Manipal Experience H e might be a doctor by training but heā€™s better known as an astute investor and a successful entrepreneur. Defying conventional wisdom that says doctors canā€™t be good businessmen, some people have the ability to work for the society and also raise successful, sprawling business enterprises. One of whom is the Bengaluru-based billionaire entrepreneur Dr. Ranjan Pai who heads an Education and Healthcare empire in India. The Pai family has been operating in the ļ¬eld of education for three generations as the Manipal Education and Medical Group (MEMG). Padmashri Dr. Tonse Madhava Ananth Pai, Ranjanā€™s grandfather, set up Indiaā€™s ļ¬rst private, self-ļ¬nanced medical college in 1953, in Manipal, in the State of Karnataka. Over the years more colleges were set up in various disciplines and in 1993 this institution was given a university status and became the Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), which, recently, has been recognized by the Government of India as an ā€œInstitution of Eminence. The educational institutions grew in leaps and bounds under the leadership of Ranjanā€™s father, Padma Bhushan Dr Ramdas M Pai, who expanded the footprint beyond Karnataka to set up universities and educational institutions in Sikkim and overseas in Malaysia, Nepal, Dubai and Antigua. Continuing with the strong legacy, Ranjan professionalized the operations and established ManipalEducationandMedicalGroupasacorporateenterprise.Movingonfromjusteducation, MEMGā€™s oļ¬€erings, today, are broadly spread across four key verticals of Education, Healthcare, Research and Foundation. A recent investment entry is in the health insurance sector. MEMG At MEMG, the technology initiatives provide the freedom to deliver new pedagogic methods and systems of learning. Dr. Ranjan Pai Group Chairman, Manipal Education and Medical Delivering Excellence in Healthcare and Education: Says Dilip Jose, MD & CEO of Manipal Health Enterprises,ā€œWith plans to provide the best in class primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare, we think that Ayushman Bharat is very relevant initiative for our country. With 15 hospitals, including our teaching hospitals, and over 6000 beds, we can extend our support to geographies that are underserved in healthcare. While the basic building blocks for aļ¬€ordable healthcare are in place, what is needed is a progressive and proactive approach, backed by innovation, to healthcare delivery.ā€ Over the last few years, Dr Ranjan Pai has gained the reputation of being a patient investor who has built a very focused yet diverse portfolio. His willingness to channel funds into startups that focus on high-risk sectors such as life sciences and biotechnology where investor interest is usually lowā€”has won him the admiration of peers and entrepreneurs. Leveraging technologies like artiļ¬cial intelligence (AI), blockchain, and data analytics to provide this support, is another of Dr. Paiā€™s vision for MEMG. Generating and using data to improve health outcomes, maintain electronic health records and cloud storage and even consumer-facing mobile apps, empower patients as well as healthcare providers to deliver much better service. As Dr. Ballal, says,ā€œWe at Manipal Health are committed to providing a patient centric, clinically excellent and an ethical-technology driven health care. We are also looking at a viable PPP model to drive the exciting, yet challenging, universal health care mission of the Governmentā€™s Ayushman Bharat, the largest of such initiatives in the world.ā€ Padmashri Dr. Tonse Madhava Ananth Pai, Ranjanā€™s grandfather, set up Indiaā€™s rst private, self- nanced medical college in 19 , in Manipal, in the State of arnata a. Lack of awareness about disease symptoms, early diagnosis contribute to late diagnosis, delayed treatment and high mortality. Unnecessary Mastectomy (i.e, total breast removal) is common practice which scares women from receiving appropriate institutional treatment. Therefore, considering the growing BC burden in India, OBHC has developed multi-pronged, high-impact, innovative initiatives in the ļ¬ght against BC. International Standards in BC Clinical Management 1) Advanced Breast Cancer Diagnostics OBHC is equipped with sophisticated imaging modalities such as Contrast Enhanced Digital Mammography with 3D Tomosynthesis (ļ¬rst in India) and Automated Breast Volume Scanner. Precision biopsy procedures with Vacuum-assisted Biopsy and Robotic arm-guided Stereotactic biopsy are available at aļ¬€ordable rates. 2) Pioneering Breast Oncoplastic Surgery in India BOS is a new paradigm that combines principles of BC surgery and cosmetic surgery in the same sitting.Loss of breast via mutilating surgeries can lead to psychological trauma and depression, thereby, decreasing survival rates. In 2017, OBHC and UEA have jointly started an academic degree program (M.Ch. in Breast Oncoplasty) which is the only course in Asia oļ¬€ering cutting-edge BOS training (www.breastoncoplasty. org). Over 50 surgeons from India and South East Asia (Sri Lanka, India's State-Of- The-Art Breast Cancer Centre O rchids Breast Health Center (OBHC), an initiative of the Prashanti Cancer Care Mission (PCCM) Pune , is a one-of-its-kind ā€˜Centre of Aļ¬€ordable Excellence in Breast Care in Indiaā€™. OBHC has pioneered several innovative techniques in breast diagnostics and surgery ā€“ ONCOPLASTIC BREAST SURGERY. It is a unique research- driven enterprisecomprising of a team of onco-clinicians, radiologists, geneticists, clinical scientists, physicians, psycho-oncology counselors and dieticians at its core. OBHC has blended state-of-the-art clinical managementstrategieswithcommunityoutreach, trainingandresearch. OBHC Initiatives for Fight against Breast Cancer (BC) in India According to WHO, breast cancer is now the most common cancer in India aļ¬€ecting all socio-economic strata of the society (1, 62,468 new BC cases diagnosed annually) with highest global mortality rate. Majority of BCs in India are detected in young, premenopausal women Indonesia, Maldives, Afghanistan, Bangladesh) have enrolled full-time in the program while over 500 surgeons have been trained in various workshops conducted all over India. Translational Breast Cancer Research Indian BC cancer proļ¬le is diļ¬€erent than other countries with reference to its epidemiology, clinico-pathology as well as clinical management. Unlike the west, majority Indian BC cases are diagnosed in advanced stage and predominantly in young, premenopausal women. Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) is an aggressive and diļ¬ƒcult-to-treat disease highly prevalent in Indian women. Hence, it is incorrect to directly extrapolate research ļ¬ndings from western population in treating Indian BC patients. All leading international cancer hospitals (i.e., M.D. Anderson Cancer Centre, Houston, USA, Institute of Cancer Research, London) have established highly successful cancer research programs. On similar themes, PCCM has joined hands with Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), a premier national research institute in Pune in 2017 to establish a Centre of Translational Cancer Research (CTCR), supported by seed fund from Bajaj Auto Ltd. CTCR has undertaken major BC themed-research relevant to Indian context in the themes of public health, epidemiology, genetics, OBS, chemo- radiation and psycho-oncology. CTCRresearchagendaincludesunderstandingthemolecularbasis of high prevalence of TNBCs in India population.Fruitful collaborations with world-renowned breast cancer clinicians and researchers from USA and UK have been established. UniqueTNBC genetic patterns and molecular biomarkers have been identiļ¬ed that will be helpful to the Indian onco-clinicians in better prevention, diagnosis and treatment. CTCR has also undertaken major initiatives in capacity building of cancer researchers by conducting novel training programs in research methodology, molecular oncology, bioinformatics, preclinical and clinical research. In September 2019, CTCR will be hosting the ļ¬rst- ever conference in Indian based onā€˜The Cancer Genome Atlas ( TCGA) which is worldā€™s largest open-source database for cancer research funded by National Cancer Institute , USA. Community Outreach 1. Sensitization Based on WHO guidelines, OBHC conducts BC awareness campaigns in Pune that sensitizes thousands of women in Pune annually. ImportantBC-related information is provided in all languages to dispel myths about the signs, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment aspects with an emphasis on quality of life. In addition, regular symposia are organized for the community to discuss breast cancer related issues with experts. OBHC also organizes one of Puneā€™s largest breast cancer awareness marathon (ā€˜Our Marathonā€™) with over 15,000 participants. 2. Screening OBHC has created aClinical Breast Examination (CBE)-based screening program in which women are examined by breast palpation performed by well-trained para-medicals and medical social workers. A mobile mammography project was created to screen women (above 40 years) for breast abnormalities in which trained radiologists examined the mammograms.In2016-17 over 50,000 women were sensitized via awareness talks and 6500 women were screening using CBE and mammography. The diagnosed cases identiļ¬ed via this screening program were treated free of cost at OBHC. 3. Chemotherapy Corpus With the help of generous donors, OBHC has also created a chemotherapy corpus to provide free and concessional life-saving anti- cancer drugs, including Herceptineto underprivileged patients (1238 concessional and 539 freeships amounting to over 2 Cr in FY 2018-19) 4. Patient Support Rehabilitation is the most important arm of breast cancer requiring signiļ¬cant support from family and friends, OBHC has created a PINK -RIBBON support group which provides support to patients and caregivers via organizing transport, babysitting, nutritional programs, psychological counseling, picnics and get togethers. These initiativesare spearheaded by Ms.LalehBusheri,(CEO, PCCM) and members of the support group. The aforementioned high- impact projects of PCCM and CTCR will receive a signiļ¬cant boost with generous support from socially-conscious organizations and individuals. Therefore, it is our earnest appeal to corporate houses, high-net worth individuals, philanthropists and NGOs to join hands with PCCM in the ļ¬ght against breast cancer in India by supporting the ongoing and future activities; with the credo ā€œLosing is Not an Option - Be it Hope, Breast or Lifeā€. • 13. 24 FORBES INDIA MARQUEE . LEADERS IN HEALTHCARE FORBES INDIA MARQUEE . LEADERS IN HEALTHCARE 25 When we did a detailed business ļ¬eld analysis of the healthcare scenario, with particular focus on the needs in India, we realized that the healthcare needs of our country are diverse. Though healthcare in India is a necessity, it still comes packaged as a luxury to the vast majority. We are burdened by a combination of infectious diseases and lifestyle diseases in our country. Innovative solutions, unconventional business models and unorthodox care delivery systems would be the key drivers of healthcare. Indian healthcare is on the cusp of a digital transformation. Indiaā€™s digital connectivity is poised to grow at an accelerated rate from 30 per cent in 2017 to 80 per cent in 2034, and is driving the following trends: a. Flipped care: Similar to most sectors around the world, focus has shifted from the provider to the patient. ā€œFlipped health careā€ puts control in the hands of patients, with the goal of improving health and care delivery while also reducing the cost. b. Digital Health: This is a real game changer. It is just not the App on the Bosch technology offerings could be put to use, to improve the quality of peopleā€™s lives. Bosch: Innovative products and solutions in the healthcare space T echnology and in particular, the Internet of Things (IoT) is fundamentally changing all facets of life, from how we live, work and get around - homes are becoming smarter, factories more productive, and mobility is taking on a fundamentally new form. True to its tagline,ā€œInvented for lifeā€, Bosch is constantly developing innovative Connected Products, with an intention to make all aspects of life easier. One such area, where Bosch is looking at to make a fundamental impact on human life is healthcare. Robert Bosch Engineering and Business Solutions (RBEI), headquartered in India, was incorporated as a software development center of Bosch in the year 1997. With currently over 20,000 associates, RBEI is a strategic partner powering Bosch Business divisions worldwide. RBEI healthcare believes that the future is in ā€˜Connected worldā€™ inhabited by ā€˜Connected Lifeā€™ and aims to be a partner of choice to deliver IoT enabled innovative healthcare solutions for a large scale, mass impact.ā€œWith a strong linking of our technology expertise in sensors, software and services, RBEI healthcare is a preferred partner in the international marketplace and is transforming the core nuggets of care deliveryā€says Guruprasad, VP Healthcare at RBEI. mobile phone, but putting to use the computing power of todayā€™s smart phones for delivering Point of Care diagnosis and last mile connectivity. c. Front line innovations: Low-cost portable innovations to cater to the needs of our vast rural population will help increase access by providing Point of Care diagnostics, tele and remote consultations. We strongly believe that device manufacturers must move beyond product centric business models and use patient-oriented service design (like a smart IoT enabled platform) to create comprehensive healthcare experiences. Bosch Healthcare leverages its precision engineering and state-of- the-art technology in Internet of Things (IoT), sensor technology and Social Mobility Analytics Cloud (SMAC), to promote innovation in a patient-centric healthcare delivery model. This is exactly how we have been enabling medical device companies to transform care delivery. We see the following three pivots that would be major tenets for this change in the medical field: 1. People: With increasing consumerism, patients are at the driverā€™s seat, and will be in the center of the entire healthcare ecosystem. 2. Data: Data will be one of the strongest buzzwords in the years to come. Electronic Health Records (EHRs) will become Comprehensive Health Records (CHRs) to accommodate data from many sources including remote health care data and social determinants of healthcare. 3. Technology: Emerging technologies like AI, cognitive, machine learning will unlock the value of data, and open source technologies like block chain (distributed ledger technology), will help to address the challenges related to security and privacy. The last point ā€“ ā€˜technologyā€™ is at the heart of change right now. With the advancement of technology there is a conscious demand for better engagement and quality services in the healthcare sector. Customers anticipate intuitive, smart interactions as opposed to the traditional models of care delivery. Care delivery is also undergoing changes with the primary focus being on providing value-based services. With the help of emerging technologies, there is an increasing shift from traditional to ā€˜smartā€™. In India especially, technology can play a key enabler in improving the healthcare scenario in the rural sector. We are already working on rural healthcare delivery solutions to address the critical needs of the same. I would like to highlight a few of the most pressing issues we are dealing with: Lack of trained medical professionals at Point of Care Lack of early diagnosis that helps avoid medical complications Aļ¬€ordable and accessible healthcare that does not impact the daily livelihood With technology advancements, we can also continuously monitor and ļ¬‚ag critical alerts, and thus ensure pro-active, quality care is provided at the right time, thereby reducing the pressure on the current clinical set-up. A connected health ecosystem with the key tenets of smart, personalized, portable and virtual, can aid the improvement in focus on preventive, diagnostics and wellness, and reduce the load on therapeutic in the entire spectrum of care. All appropriate investments in terms of innovation funding, partnerships with external associations like NATHEALTH, global research universities and other ecosystem partners, are being made. Intellectual property in the form of Patents, as well as various thought leadership publications like White Papers and Blogs have been continuously generated. We have won many laurels like the Edison award, HIMSS Asia paciļ¬c award to name a few. We can use technology as a key enabler to promote better health, lower costs and ensure last mile connectivity. Bosch technology is designed to fascinate, as well as to improve quality of life. Bosch believes that we can make a diļ¬€erence to the ļ¬eld of Healthcare in India. With input from Mr Guruprasad, VP, Healthcare domain, Robert Bosch Engineering and Business Solutions.

A FORMIDABLE INTELLECTUAL: Counted as one among the leading regenerative medicine experts in India, Dr. Pradeep V. Mahajan is an internationally acclaimed general surgeon, urologist as well as an academician and regenerative medicine researcher by profession for over three decades. He believes in what Albert Einstein said, ā€œWe cannot solve the problem by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.ā€, when it comes to challenges in current medical systems and treatments. Dr. Mahajan is of the opinion that science is dynamic, and one must continuously strive to find solutions to address unsolved problems. He feels that the conventional Dr. Pradeep Mahajan believes in ā€œRepair without cutsā€ by oļ¬€ering non-invasive therapies and viable options for 80+ life threatening conditions. A vision turned reality of innovations in the dynamics of medicine is propelling him to become a part of the medical revolution of the 21st century that is setting new standards every day in cell-based research and regenerative medicine. StemRx BioScience Solutions Pvt. Ltd. envisions to create a patient- centric tertiary healthcare experience focusing on non-intrusive quality care by utilizing cutting edge technologies of regenerative medicine. With patients coming from all around the globe, StemRx is focused on providing a delightful and ecstatic experience to the patients. His never-ending passion and the dedicated eļ¬€ort has helped StemRx in achieving milestones since 2011. AWE-INSPIRING OBJECTIVE: Dr. Pradeep Mahajan aims to promote cell-based therapy at a global level, while also ensuring that the technology is accessible to the masses. When asked about his ideology behind StemRx, he said, ā€œYou carry your own repairing kits within yourselfā€™. Soon, I believe that there will be a day when treatments will comprise of Cells and not Pills!ā€ Dr. Mahajan not only believes in oļ¬€ering medical assistance to those in need but also likes to share his knowledge pearls with the young generation of the country. He ļ¬rmly believes that if harnessed, regenerative medicine is the living drug molecule that could revolutionize the world of healthcare. CURE FOR TOMORROW: Visualizing the changing dynamics of medicine, Dr Pradeep V Mahajan believes that when you look back at the 20th century, the greatest scientific achievements which can change human life will not be from the field of space science or computer science but will be from regenerative medicine. Dr. Mahajan strives towards finding scientific breakthrough technologies that was never imagined. The ongoing discovery of cell-based therapy has given rise to a new alternative treatment protocol. Regenerative medicine has shifted our clinical goal from repair to regeneration. Regenerative medicine is truly revolutionizing the field of medicine through autologous therapy using cells and growth factors to address the root cause of the disease. With this goal, the concept has expanded to a variety of other applications such as Tissue engineering and Genetic medicine. Future goals should be towards use of stem cell rich blood from the umbilical cord as a key element in achieving regeneration. These clinical goals can provide long-term cures to previously untreatable injuries and diseases. We cannot solve the problem by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them. INNOVATIVE HEADWAYS: Regenerative Medicine is breaking the barriers for treatment of diseases for a variety of reasons- it leads to repopulation of healthy cell pools, regenerates tissues, boosts immunity, rejuvenates organs, and improves the quality of life. Regenerative Medicine exclusively supports all avenues that lead to the replacement or regeneration of human cells, tissue or organs, to restore or establish normal function. The sector is rapidly evolving and multidisciplinary in nature. The field of regenerative medicine is promising and can be explored to augment organ function, repair, and even regenerate by utilizing the bodyā€™s own repair and healing mechanisms. One may say that the body is converted into a natural reactor to heal itself. Dr. P. V. Mahajan Urosurgeon and Regenerative Medicine Researcher

LEADERS Care24 was started in 2014 by IIT Kanpur alumni Vipin Pathak and Garima Tripathi. Starting as a personal need to get better care for their own parents, the team decided to start reliable medical services at home in Mumbai and expand to other cities. The need for a nurse for simple blood pressure check or injections is diļ¬ƒcult for children who either have to take oļ¬€ from work to visit hospitals or rely on local agencies. The local agencies have no reliability or quality check on services. Care24 started solving this basic need of a qualiļ¬ed medical professional who could provide standard services at home. Research has proven that patients can recover faster (20-30%) due to higher comfort at home and reduce hospital readmission by 27%. Background veriļ¬cation, medical and soft skill training and a very strong technology foundation has helped us deliver quality care at home. We have been able to signiļ¬cantly increase care providers income with more work and higher salaries. ThehomecaresegmentishighlyfragmentedinIndiaunlikeUS,Japan and others where the government or insurance cover has made it is an organized and regulated industry. World home healthcare market is expected to reach $349.8 billion by 2020 from $227.5 billion in 2015 growing 9% annually. In India the market size is roughly $4 billion with ancillary markets about $20 billion. With increasing nuclear families and growing elderly population in metros, there is a huge gap between the demand and available solutions. We are determined to bring quality and standardization in this sector. Care24 now serves 1200 patients every day. Today, we have over 2000 active medical caregivers and the company has helped over 50,000 families recuperate in the comfort of their homes. The quality of delivered services has made us the trusted brand for home healthcare both for the customers and caregivers. We take pride in the fact that more than 70% of our caregivers are hired through referral program showing high levels of trust placed in us by our caregivers. Similarly 50% of our customer come from referral from families we have served in past. The biggest challenge that a customer faces today is lack of reliable care partner when they need the most. We ensure guaranteed service and faster resolution using technology and trained staļ¬€. Through our technology and supervision every patient service and recovery is monitored from timely start, feedback, recovery, query resolution from the consumer, patients and caregivers. We have achieved this trust by investing in upskilling the caregiver and through eļ¬€ective use of technology. Customer and caregiver have mobile application to keep track of the services. Every caregiver also gets a bank account and this has brought ļ¬nancial inclusion to more than 5000 providers who were left out of the digital economy. The inhouse technology makes the unit economics proļ¬table and Care24 is the only homecare company in India that will be proļ¬table Care24: Reliable Care at Home C are24 is one of the leading home healthcare company and envisions to become the biggest platform for all health services at home.
