Coorg, also known as Kodagu, is a hilly district in Karnataka known for its coffee and tea plantations. Madikeri is the main town and district headquarters, located 257 km from Bangalore. Coorg's economy depends on agriculture, plantations, and forestry, with coffee playing a vital role. Tourism has also grown in importance, with visitors attracted to Coorg's waterfalls, plantations, and religious sites. The majority population speaks Kodagu Takk, while Kannada is the official language. Coorg has a pleasant climate year-round.
2. Coorg or Kodagu
Kodagu is a hilly district of Karnataka popularly called as Coorg. This hilly region is a part of Western Ghat and it covers an
area of 4103 sq. km. located about 257 km away from state capital, Bangalore. Madikeri is the main town of Coorg and it
also serve as the district headquarters. Other major cities of the Kodagu are Virajpet, Kushalanagara and Somwarpet. Coorg
District is divided into the three talukas namely Madikeri, Virajpet and Somwarpet.
Coorg District is mostly rural and its economy mainly depends on agriculture, plantations and forestry. This region is
famous for the productions of coffee and it play a vital role of district economy. Today, tourism related businesses are also
other major sources of income by the natives. Coorg is a lovely hill station for the travelers where you will find several
beautiful waterfalls, tee & coffee estates and lovely site scenes including lots of religious places.
You also search out lots of famous peeks here like Tadiandamol, Kote Betta, Pushpagiri, Nishani Motte, Tumbe Male, etc.
Larger amounts of population in Coorg are considered as Kodava regional community and they usually utilize Kodagu Takk
or Coorgi Language as their prime dialect. Some other major communities of the state are Gowdas, Tamilians, Malayalees,
Muslims, Kurubas, Kudiyas, Yeravas, etc.
As per 2011 census report of India about 554764 people reside in Coorg. Maximum of population follows Hinduism
(warrior class or Kshatriya's) as their religions. We know the Coorgi language is main dialect of the district but Kannada
Language is accepted as official language of Coorg. English-written widely uses for educational purpose in this hilly region.
Climatic characteristics of Coorg remain pleasant throughout the year, specially in summer. Average temp of summer
(March to mid-June) is 26 °C. Average annual rainfalls of the district including Monsoons (mid-June to September) are
about 310 cm. And the winter (late-November to February) is quite cold when average temperatures stay around 15°C.
Some upper hilly region it may be bellow 0°C dc in winter.
About Coorg or Kodagu
4. Madikeri is the destination city for traveling entire Coorg district. This town may be called as a
hilly forestry town with lots of super scenic views and tourist attractions. This town also called as
the Scotland of India. Madikeri Fort is the main attraction in the city.
Talakaveri is a lovely place from where Kaveri River has originated. Talakaveri is located on the
Brahmagiri hill near Bhagamandala. You also get here a Hindu temple which is dedicated to Lord
Brahma.
Abbey Falls is a beautiful waterfall located just 6 km away from Madikeri. It is located in private
coffee plantations estates. You will also find a Hindu temple close to the falls which is dedicated
to Goddess Kali.
Nisargadhama is a man-made island of Krishna River which is popular for picnicking. It is
located about 31 km away from Madikeri. This island covers an area of 64 acre where you will
find deer, rabbits, peacocks, elephants, etc.
Iruppu Falls is little far away from Madikeri. It makes a distance of about 51 km from the city
located in the Brahmagiri hill range. This falls is surrounded by lush green Western Ghats.

5. Dargah Sharief is a popular destination for Muslim. It located at Yemmemadu in Coorg
district about 36 km away from Madikeri. It was constructed in honor to Hazrath Sufi
Shaheed and Sayyed Hassan Sakaf Halramir.
Mandalpatti is a small beautiful mountain range located about 23 km away from Madikeri.
As bus facility is not available yet taking a cab or own vehicle is advised. Mandalpatti is kind
of beautiful small green mountain range which mostly covered with thick grasslands.
Mallalli falls is about 51 km away from Madikeri. This falls is one of the popular tourist
spots in Coorg. So, don’t miss it. Transportation to the falls is not so well. You have to go by
walking for last few kms.
Irpu Falls is a famous tourist destination in the district, but it located (at Kutta village) little
far away from Madikeri. It makes a distance about 82 km. it is a falls of the Bhramagiri hills.
Besides of there some more tourist attractions are also situated in the district like Kakkabe,
Omkareshwara Temple, Chiklihole Reservoir, Harangi Dam, Chelavara Waterfalls,
Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuaries, Talakaveri Wildlife Sanctuaries, Pushpagiri Wildlife
Sanctuaries, Nagarhole National Park, etc.
