Ancient Egyptian clothes refers to clothing worn in ancient Egypt from the end of the Neolithic period (prior to 3100 BC) to the collapse of the Ptolemaic Kingdom with the death of Cleopatra in 30 BC. Egyptian clothing was filled with a variety of colors. Adorned with precious gems and jewels, the fashions of the ancient Egyptians were made for not only beauty but also comfort. Egyptian fashion was created to keep cool while in the hot desert.

4. History of Ancient Egyptian Costume and Accessories
INTRODUCTION
Ancient Egyptian clothes refers to clothing worn in ancient Egypt from the end
of the Neolithic period (prior to 3100 BC) to the collapse of the Ptolemaic
Kingdom with the death of Cleopatra in 30 BC. Egyptian clothing was filled
with a variety of colors. Adorned with precious gems and jewels, the fashions of
the ancient Egyptians were made for not only beauty but also comfort. Egyptian
fashion was created to keep cool while in the hot desert.
Egyptian Clothing
The Ancient Egyptians wore clothing made from linen. Linen is a light
and cool fabric that worked well in the hot climate of Egypt. The
Egyptians made linen from the fibers of the flax plant. Workers would
spin the fibers into thread that would then be woven into linen fabric
using looms.
Egyptian Clothing (Men):
The men wore a short loincloth resembling a kilt. It was called
“Shendyt/Schenti/Shenti”. The length of the kilts varied. Later it was
supplemented with a sleeveless shirt.
Shenti/Schenti/Shendyt:
The men wore knee-length shirts, loincloths or kilts made of linen. Their
garments were sometimes decorated with gold thread and colourful beadwork.
The priests, viziers and certain officials wore long white robes that had a strap

5. over one shoulder, and sem-priests (one of the ranks in the priesthood) wore
leopard skins over their robes.

Egyptian Clothing (Women):
Women wore “Kalasiris” which was draped around the body and might cover
one or both shoulders or be worn with shoulder straps. The top could reach
anywhere from bellow to breast or up to neck (Some time they kept the bust
bare). The bottom hem usually reached calves or ankles. Sometime the dresses
had short sleeves and often they were sleeveless. Usually a belt was worn to
hold the folds of the cloth. Sometimes shawls were worn

6. Kalasiris:
Goddesses and elite women were portrayed
wearing a sheath with broad shoulder straps. In the
New Kingdom, they wore sheaths decorated with
gold thread and colourful beadwork, and a type of
sari; the sheath had only one thin strap. These
dresses were made of linen, and decorated with
beautifully coloured patterns and beadwork. The
bottom hem usually reached calves or ankles.

7. Jewelry:
Jewelry was very popular in ancient Egypt, no matter the social class. It was
heavy and rather voluminous. The main reason for wearing jewelry is because
of its aesthetic function. The Egyptians were quite soberly dressed in white
linen fabrics, and jewelry offered a
possibility for contrast. The Egyptian
preference was towards the use of
bright colors, lustrous stones and
precious metals. Gold was won in large
quantities in the eastern desert of
Egypt, but also came from Nubia, that
was an Egyptian colony for centuries.

9. Shoes:
Footwear was the same for both sexes. It consisted of coiled sewn sandals of
leatherwork, or for the priestly class, papyrus. Since Egyptians were usually
barefoot, sandals were worn on special occasions or at times when their feet
might get hurt

10. Hair Styles & Head Dresses:
Women's hairstyles were more unique than
those of men. Women generally preferred a
smooth, close coiffure, a natural wave and
long curl. Women in the Old Kingdom
preferred to have short cuts or chin length
bobs. However, women in the New
Kingdom wore their hair long or touted a
wig. Women tied and decorated their hair
with flowers and linen ribbons.
