word’s meaning is derived not only
from how it is spelled and
pronounced but also from how it is
used in a sentence

speech, keep in mind that the way a word
is used in a sentence determines which
part of speech it is.
For example:
Noun: I ate a fish at school.
Verb: they fish in the nearby river.
This will make more sense later

13. Common nouns
These name general, nonspecific people,
places, things, or ideas.
Examples:
man, city, school, church
14. Proper nouns
Specific (i.e., not generic) names for a particular person,
place, or thing. Always capitalized in English
Examples:
Malema, Klipgat Sec. School, Johannesburg
16. I ate fish at school.
They fish in the nearby river.
Identify the verb in both sentences
17. Action verbs
• words that express an action(mental/ physical)
• Action verbs can be either transitive or intransitive.
Linking verbs
• join the subject and the predicate. They do not show action.
Instead, they help the words at the end of the sentence or
describe the subject.
Helping verbs
• used before action or linking verbs to convey additional
information regarding aspects of possibility or time.
