1. Interpreting the brief
The brief states that the client for this project is Sunderland Culture and they are holding a
mixed media exhibition, titled ‘Bright Lights: Northern Talent, and it is to be held across
different Sunderland Culture venues. The purpose of the exhibition is to showcase young talent
in the Northeast.
The requirements for this are that the piece presented has to be a video piece that is a
approximately 15 minutes, 5 print pieces or a combination of the two.
The brief also states the target audience for this project is young people between the ages of
16-25 with the goal being to educate young people on local talent.
A final important note that the brief states is that the final piece has to clearly showcase the
region in some way whether it be through location or discussing a regionally specific debate.
I decided that making print pieces was the best idea for me since I’m more confident in my
photography skills than I am in my videography skills and I also enjoy photography more. This
was not something I had to put too much thought into especially since it is my final college
project, I wanted to just work with what I am best at.
In terms of ideas for this project, I originally thought of making it about music in the Northeast
since I felt it would be a good way to promote young artists and also get experience in
photographing concerts however, due to the time frame for this project that didn’t seem
possible.
After a lot of thought I decided it would be nice to showcase multiple talents so I picked some
that I have some prior knowledge in. The ones I chose are Poetry, scrapbooking, photography,
music and knitting. I chose a wide range of talents to show that there are a wide range of
talented people in the area.
