2. Initial Ideas
After looking at the brief my immediate thought was to
create something based on music.
Although I do not have much knowledge on music in the
North East specifically I do have knowledge on music in
general and so I felt it was a topic I’d be able to discuss
well.
I originally wanted to create a documentary however, I
later decided that showing music venues and I feel that
can be shown better through a print piece.
The reason I decided to talk about venues is because
they are a very important part of music culture but
they’re not talked about as much as I feel they should be
.
3. Investigation and Analysis
(client research)
To start off, I did research into the client ‘Sunderland Culture’ to
learn more about the organisation and help me to get a better
idea of who this project is for.
I learnt that they are a charity that focuses on ‘improving life for
everyone in Sunderland through culture’ as their website states.
I also learnt a lot about the venues they run such as, The Fire
Station and the National Glass Centre along with some of the
events they have going on currently such as watercolour classes
and an AC/DC cover band.
4. Investigation and analysis
(existing product research)
For my product research I looked at four different pieces, two
that are related to local acts and two that are not related to the
area, but they have a similar concept to what I want to create.
One of those posters can be seen on the side here.
The reason I chose this kind of design is because it’s a design
that I have always found interesting and wanted to try
something with, so this feels like a good opportunity to try that.
It is also a very challenging design to create though editing
software and I think trying something challenging for this would
give me good experience.
5. Target Audience
I created a survey to carry out my audience research. First, I asked basic questions such
as age and gender, the results stated that the majority of my audience are between the
ages of 16-17 and there is an equal amount of males and females.
The next questions I asked were whether the participant worked or is a student or
neither. This again is to help learn more about the audience. This also helps me to get
an idea on their availability.
Since my project is music based I asked if the participants have ever been to a concert
since, most of them have that means that talking about concerts in my project would
be relevant.
Finally, as you can see here, I asked if they would be interested in learning about music
and venues in Sunderland. Since that is the entire premise of my project it’s important
that the majority would be interested in this and thankfully they were.
6. Content
Ideas
My first two prints will be the outside of two separate
venues
My first two prints will be of the outside of a venue and the
inside of a venue during an event. The angles of these will
be low angles most likely since getting higher angles would
be difficult. For the first one in editing I was them to have
an old feeling so I will likely go for black and white or
possibly an old film poster look.
For the second one which will also be the inside and
outside of a venue I want to have a pop art design since
that’s a form of art I’ve always been interested in and have
tried out in a traditional art before but this time I will be
attempting to create it digitally.
Lastly, a collage of different venues
7. Design Ideas
Like I said before I want to do a pop art style for some of the
prints but I would also like to try something with an older feel
to it so possibly something in black and white or maybe
something with and old movie kind of feel.
I didn’t put any text on my draft ideas but I will be putting my
logo on them and will also possibly put the name of the venue
on some of them to give a more poster like feeling.
8. Selling point
and how it fits
the client and
audience
The client is looking for art from young people and that’s
what I will be making so that in itself fits.
I also recently helped out with some events that were
for the Bright Lights exhibition so I feel I got a better
understanding of what they are looking for.
