1. Subject Matter Research
To fully understand each of the topics I am going to be representing in my project I wanted to learn
about the origins of each of them so I can gain a better understanding of the topics and thus
represent them better.
Poetry
poetry
noun
1. literary work in which the expression of feelings and ideas is given intensity by the use of
distinctive style and rhythm, poems collectively or as a genre of literature.
"He felt a desire to investigate through poetry the subjects of pain and death."
It’s impossible to pinpoint when exactly poetry was created since
there are so many different types including spoken word meaning
there is likely no documentation of earlier works of poetry. From my
research I found that the earliest poetry that we know of is “The Epic
of Gilgamesh” which is a series of Sumerian poems which date back
to 2100 BC.
Although poetry has always existed many people believe it was
popularised in England in the 18th
century with people such as John
Keats and Percy Bysshe Shelley. Keats work didn’t become popular
whilst he was alive but he became very well known for some of his
works such as “Ode on a Grecian Urn”
Nowadays, poetry remains and important art form that is taught in schools as it is seen to
help develop reading skills and promotes thinking especially when they involve rhyming. A
personal example of this is when my class was asked to create our own haiku in primary
school.
Scrapbooking
scrapbook
noun
1. a book of blank pages for sticking cutting, drawings,
or pictures in.
As far as we know scrapbooking goes as far back as the
Middle Ages. A more widely known scrapbook is Mark
Twain’s scrapbook. In the 1800’s, plain scrapbooks
started being sold in shops and so he bought one and
created a patented scrapbook which is now known as one
of the most well-known scrapbook.
2. Photography
photography
noun
1. the art or practice of taking and processing photographs.
The first ever photograph was taken I 1826
by French scientist, Joseph Nicephore
Niepce, titled literally “View from the window
at Le Gras” which was taken at his family
home.
Currently photography is an extremely well-
liked hobby since taking photos can be done
on phones which people carry around with
them all time.
Music
music
noun
1.
vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) combined in such a way as to produce beauty
of form, harmony, and expression of emotion.
"Couples were dancing to the music”.
Music is very broad so I will be talking about playing instruments more
specifically. Many young people especially those that are interested in
bands tend to follow in their footsteps and begin learning to play
instruments too.
Since I am talking about instruments in general and not a specific form of
music it is impossible to talk in depths about the origins but music has
always existed and it is very difficult to pinpoint the exact beginning.
3. Knitting
knitting
noun
1. the craft or action of knitting.
o material which is in the process of being knitted.
"I put down my knitting."
It is believed that knitting originated in the Middle East in the 5th
century.
In the modern-day knitting is something that is often thought
of as an activity for older people however, over the past few
years it has become popular amongst younger generations
and is often used to make clothes.
