I have done my first photoshoot in Brighton which gave me some
images to include in my magazine. I feel that it wasn’t as successful
that it should have been, and I might make another trip down to
Brighton so that I can get more material if I feel like I need some more
imagery to work with. I wanted to get images that were successfully
portraying the adventurous and diverse side of Brighton so that the
viewers would have a better idea of what Brighton’s vintage and
independent shops are like. I had to deal with the dull and gloomy
weather that happened to fallon that day, which didn’t turn out too bad
because I had enough light entering the camera to take some decent
shots. I also asked two of my friends to be my models and appear
some of the photos, in which they were willing to do.
3. The first image is of a quaint street, with a variation of
different vehicles lining the street. I like how there is a
retro looking campervan in the background standing
out, I feel that it portrays how different Brighton is to
many different cities as there is more of a creative flair
to it. The next two images show independant shops
that are located in the lanes. A vintage clothing shop,
bookshop and record shop called ‘The Wax Factor’. It
is an independant record and music shop, which sells
vinyl and other music memorabilia too.I feel that these
images are successful because it gives the audience
a glance at what these independant shops look like
from the outside, and what you need to expect from
this part of Brighton.
This image shows the back of my two models heads,
as they are walking down a street It shows that they
are close together and enjoying their time browsing
through the small and unique area.
4. These images show vintage clothing being displayed
inside and outside of the shop.I like the there are a
lot of colours going on, which adds interest into the
image, drawing your eye to them. You can see many
different tones and colours which give a vibrant
effect, drawing the reader’s attention to the picture.
This image shows a shelf filled with a variety of odd
retro items. I like the contrast in this image because
there are a lot of bright and interesting colours
present, which makes an interesting effect. The next
3 images are all of a similar style, as they are taken
inside the vintage shop. The picture in the middle is
slightly darker, which would be improved by adding
more brightness into the image. I think that these
images have come out successfully because they
clearly display the items available to purchase which
are laid out and presented nicely inside the shop,
which make them attractive to the viewer. These
images are interesting in my opinion, because there
is a range of clothing, so many styles and
possibilities that you could uncover inside these
rooms.
This image is an upwards shot of some fur coats. It can be considered as
successful because the different tones in the image all suit and combine which
looks well together.
These next two images are very similar, as they have been taken through a
mirror. I was playing with an unusual style of shot, by looking through the mirror
at the garments hanging up surrounding the mirror, and in the cabinet style shelf.
The next image is of myself and my two friends, as I have documented our time
spent in the shop together. This image captures our relationship and friendship
that we all have together, as we are hanging out. I feel like this image is too dark
and it can be improved by going into photoshop and editing the levels and
brightness in order for you to clearly see what is happening in the shot.
5. The next two shots show close ups of unique items, such as retro hats, old
boots and piles of frayed blue jeans. I like these images because I think that
they work quite well together because they show the unique one off items that
you can find in many vintage shops.
The photograph with the boots in, clearly shows the boots being the main
subject in the frame, as I have zoomed into them and made them the main focal
point.
I have shot this image of my friend helping the other friend put on a fur coat. I
feel that this has captured the relationship between them both. It is however
quite unsuccessful because I should have shot the image from a different angle
so I got a better point of view.
In the next three images, it portrays my friend Georgia, dressing up in the
leopard print faux fur coat. I felt that we had a bit of fun with her dressing up in
this coat because you can tell by her facial expressions coming through in the
imagery that she is enjoying herself. I think they are successful because they
show how she is feeling at that point in time, and that she is having a great time
shopping and browsing through vintage shops that Brighton has to offer.
6. These two images are shot outside on the street, the
first one showing my two models walking in front of
me in a busy street lane and the second of some
flowers presented beautifully in front of a shop. I
wanted to portray the Brighton Lanes in a positive
way, so I focused on the bright, fresh looking things
going on in and around this area.
I feel that the flowers and plants bring a positive vibe
to my imagery and show Brighton as a clean and
lovely place to visit, giving it a good reputation.
The next image is of a shop window which has a very
unique and appealing window display. I think it was of
a clothes or vintage shop, which was decorated for
Halloween. It shows a surgical themed display which
would be interesting to show my audience the different
flairs and styles of Brighton’s shops.

These images were taken outside, mostly on the beach of
Brighton. I wanted to get a sense of the weather and the overall
atmosphere of the place, giving an honest representation of
what it is really like to be in Brighton. I feel that these
photographs came out kind of dark, which could be sorted out
when I am editing my images and getting them ready to be
uploaded onto my website and perhaps being inserted into my
magazine pages.
I feel that they are very colourless overall and portray the place
as a grey and gloomy, but that was just the weather on that
particular day.
8. This next image was taken outside one of Brighton’s Mod clothing
shops, and I feel that it gives a different style of vintage feel to the
photoshoot because I have included a scooter and not just vintage
shops. I like the colors in the image because I feel that they work
well together and the angle of the shot makes you feel that you are
looking down at the motorised vehicle.
The next two images are standard scenes of the beach which show
a lot of seagulls and several beach wanderers. As you can see, the
lighting has changed dramatically here, because it began to cloud
over and there was less light getting into my camera at the time.
The 3 images after, show my two models sharing a close intimate
moment which show them kissing. It brings up the theme of
sexuality as Brighton is known for being a gay city and very
accepting of all genders and sexualities. Brighton is a very open
city and a lot of diverse people live in this area, so I feel that these
images have a certain carefree style about them. The lighting in
these photographs appears better as I am focusing on the models
close up and they have turned out more successfully.
The next two images show my model Gee, walking down a piece
of concrete leading out to sea. I feel that these work effectively
because it could portray the sense of being free and the thrill of
being at the beach, and exploring a new location. They appear
very dark but I can sort out these problems in photoshop if I feel
that I need to use them.
The next three images are of the West Pier, that is now derelict
and not accessible to the public. I feel that this structure gives a
sense of the past to my photoshoot because it is a historic
landmark that was used frequently in the past.
9. The next three images are of my models and random
people in the background. They proceeded to walk up the
steps as I stood at the bottom of them. I then walked up
and joined them as they had their arm around each other
in the last photo. I feel that this last photo is too bright,
which I could edit in photoshop and sort out this problem.
The two images after show an overview of the beach and
the pier, which is different to the regular Brighton pier
pictures. I didn't want to focus on the new pier because i
feel that it is very overrated and I think there is better style
to the old West pier, for photographic purposes.
The last two images show a place that we stood to enjoy
freshly cooked doughnuts, the traditional seaside treat. I
show the doughnuts in the last image which look delicious
and shows the viewer the places that you could go and
enjoy food right next to the beach.
10. Evaluation of shoot
I think that my shoot went well overall because I went to the exact location where I want to base my article and magazine
on, so that the photographs are as authentic as possible. I think that the vintage shop photos work the best because of the
different colours and exciting pieces of clothing that are present in them. They will work well for the articles in my magazine
and also to be displayed on my website as they would draw people’s interests in.
I also think that the shoot went well because I got a few good shots with my models on the beach of them kissing, which I
feel could present how open and accepting Brighton is as a place, something that I could suggest mentioning as a part of
my magazine. I think that these shots work successfully because they are different to my other photographs that I have
gathered and create a contrast between just showing the vintage side of Brighton, it shows the lives of people who travel
there too.
Looking back on my shoot, I feel that I should have taken different shots in Brighton in order to get a wider range to play
around with, as I have a limited number of photographs from several locations. I feel that I could maybe travel to Brighton
again and do a new shoot to get some more relevant photographs in order for me to improve my magazine and website
pages. I could possibly plan out the photographs so I have exact ideas of what I would need to achieve and gather
photographs of.
