1) The document provides an evaluation of the final news production project from a student's media studies course. It describes three individual news stories the student created: a copy-only story about upcoming music festivals, an interview story about issues with college timetables, and a vox pops story about student views on a recent election.
2) It discusses the process of researching, scripting, recording and editing each story. It also notes some challenges faced, such as variations in audio volume between speakers.
3) Additionally, it covers the creation of intro/outro segments, a show jingle featuring all group members, and some final positive points about how the different elements came together to form a cohesive overall news show
1. Final News Production: Evaluation
FirstStory:
The firstnewsstoryI decidedtodo wasmy CopyOnlystory.I wantedto dosomethingwhich
would’ve beeninterestingandrelevanttothe majorityof studentsatEcclesCollege.Idecidedtodo
it aboutLeeds andReadingfestival andlocal Manchesterfestival Parklife.R&LandParklife are 2
commonfestivals forstudentsespeciallyinEccles SixthformasI know quite afew people have
attendedthe festivals inpastyears.Plusjustafew weeksbefore Ihaddecidedtouse thisinmy
newsproduction R&Land Parklife hadannouncedprettymuchthe full line-ups.Soitwasreally
handyas I couldmentionpopularactswhichhad beenofficiallyconfirmedinmystory.Iresearched
a little aboutthe festivalseventhoughIalreadyknew quite alotof informationaboutthem due to
me attendingthe LeedspreviouslyandlivinginManchesterIknew alot aboutParklife.After
researchingIstartedto scriptthe story. It wasprettyeasyto scriptdue to it justbeingme that was
speaking.Whenscriptinganinterviewitshardbecause youdon’tknow whatthe response isgoing
to be from the personyouare interviewing.SoIquicklyputmyscripttogetherwhichwasn’ttoo
hard, justinparts it startedto soundmore like anadvertwhenitwasan informativestory.SoI
changeditto make it soundright.WhenI had completedmyscriptIrecordeditat home withmy
phone as ithas goodqualityrecordingonit. That was prettymuchit for the firststorydue to it not
needingmuch editingoraudiochanges. WhenIhad completedmyaudiorecordingthere wasn’t
much to change before itbeingaddedintothe completenewsshow withthe otherstories. There
was a fewminorchangesthatI changedwitha few little cutsbutall the audiostayedthe same
volume.
Somethingthatmaybe could’ve beenimprovedwasthe audiobehindthe story.Itmaybe would’ve
beenmore fittingforitto be a bit more upbeatandrocky as it would’ve beenmore relevanttothe
subjectof the story.
I wouldsaythat the suitabilityandrelevance tothe targetaudience wasastrong point. When
scriptingIwantedto brieflymentionanumberof acts thathad beenconfirmedtoplayat the
festivals.Ichose the oneswhichmostpeoplearoundthe collegewouldknow andlike.
SecondStory:
My secondstoryprocesswasa little differentcomparedtothe firstCopyOnlystory;due to there
beinga fewotherpiecesof worktocomplete inthe processleadinguptothe actual recordingof it.
So mysecondstory wasan interview storyaboutthe inconvenience of CollegeTimetables.Idid
quite a lotof researchforthisas I wantedthisstoryto come out good because Iam not happywith
my timetable andIwantedtoknowthat itisn’tjustme thatfeelsthisway. SoI startedwith
conductinga surveywhichIthensentout to studentsfrommycollege andpostedtosocial media
for people incollege tocomplete soIhadquite a lotof responses.Iwouldsaythatmysurveyhelped
me a lotwiththenmanagingtocontinue toplan the restof mystory. I thenanalysedthe results
whichwasideal as itthenallowedme tofullyunderstandotherstudent’sopinionsof the timetable
system.Andthe goodthingwasthe majorityof myresponseswere onmyside withwhattheyhad
to say,so that made it easierasI thenhad reasonandevidence toscriptmyinterview questions. I
originallyplannedtointerviewthe headof mediaatEcclesSixthFormcentre but due to timetabling
and unavailabilityIcouldnotinterview him.SoIusedmy back upplanand interviewedone of the
2. mainmediatutors. It wentgreatwhenI interviewedhimashe knew the correctanswersto the
questionsIwasasking.Ihad plannedmyquestionsandconductedmyinterview.Itwentokayandit
helda lotof informationandexplained how stressfulitistotimetable ahuge numberof students.
AfterI hadcompletedthe interviewIthencroppeditso itwas readyto add intothe full show.Itwas
prettystraightforwardso didn’treallyneedmucheditingandthe voiceswere projectedwell
throughoutthe interviewsodidn’treallyneedmanipulating.
One of the negative pointsisthatnowIhave heard itin the final show there isacouple of parts
duringthe interview whenIamaskingthe questionswhere Istumbleonmywords.Andit soundsa
bitkindof robotic.Thiscouldn’treallybe helpedunlessIre-recordedthe interview whichseems
pointlessasthe firstone wasquite goodandhad an outcome of what I wanted.
AnddefinitelyagoodpointIwouldsaywouldbe the interview itself as itcame out rallyinformative
and interesting.Pluswhenconsideringitonan actual radionewsshow forstudentsIthinkthey
wouldenjoyhearingthe processof makingatimetable.
AlsowiththisstoryI had to separatelyrecordanintroso itexplained the storyandthe reasoning
behindmychoice of topic. The introagain wasn’ttoobad as it wasprettystraightforwardafter the
scriptingprocess.HoweverIdidstumble onmywordsina few placeswhichcould’ve beenimproved
but onlyif re-recorded.
ThirdStory:
Andfor my final story Idida Vox Popsonthe dayof the general electionvotingday.Itlinkedwithan
earlierstoryEmilyhadrecordedaboutthe leadupto the votingday.Andwhatstudent’sthoughts
were onthe electionandwhichpartiestheysupportedandwhattheywhotheywere planningon
votingfor. My Vox popswas askingpeople whotheyhadvotedforonthat day as mostpeople
would’ve votedatthe time of myVox Pops.
I had recordeda little introbasicallystatingthatIwas interviewinganumberof studentsonthe day
the electionvoteshadtobe casted. To findout theirviewsof the electionandwhytheyhave voted
for whomtheyhave.Ithenput ittogetherwithmyrecordedVox Popswhichwentquite well.I
interviewed3studentseachwithdifferentviewsandpointsaboutwhytheywere votingforwhom
theyhad chosen.2 of the studentswere 18and one was 17 so the one that wasn’tof age statedthat
she was tooyoungbut if she couldvote she would’ve votedforLabour.AftermyVox Popshad
finishedIdidalittle Outrobasicallyexplainingthe resultsIgatheredfromthe Vox popsanda brief
summery.AsI feel people are more politicsaware Iexplainedthatthere won’tbe asmanywasted
votesif people understandabitmore.
Thenjustafter the outroit Live CrossesovertoEmilywiththe coverage of herstory whichwasthe
leadupto the votingday.She hadinterviewedanumberof students,askedtheiragessoitwould
give the listenersanideaof the ages. And she also askedaboutwhotheywere planningonvoting
for.It workedreallywell asthe 2 storieswere slightlydifferentbutlinkedreallywell.Iwould
definitelysaythiswasa positive point.
HoweverIwouldsaythat eventhoughIthoughtthe 2 storieswentwell togethertheycould’ve
maybe variedouta little.Butthe electiononlyhappensonce every5yearsso was reallyrelevantto
feature inthe show.
3. ShowJingle:
we realisedaftertryingtoedit the storiestogetherthatwe neededsomethinginthe middle of the
storyto kindof normalize itandfill abitof emptyspace.Itwas reallyeasytodo as we justsimply
had to recordit inthe studio. We thoughtbecause there was3 of us involvedinthe show we should
each involve ourvoicestothe jingle.Sowe all contributedtoit.Ithinkthisworksreallywell due toit
keepingthe shownatural andmore professional.AfterrecordingitEmilyediteditandaddedalittle
bitof audiofroma Bustedsong tokeepitrelevanttothe target audience.Itmade itsoundnotso
hard hittingandserious.
Showintro:
We alsorecordeda little showintro toobviouslyintroducethe show asa whole. We scriptedforit
and we eachrecordedour ownversionsothat inthe final edititcouldfeature eachmemberof the
group’svoice.Itworkedreallywellinthe sense thatitchangeditup a little ratherthanjusthearing
the same voice.But the audiowasun-levelledsome bitswere fineandotherbitsjustweren’tloud
enoughbutit wasbecause of howquietpeople spoke.
Overall EditedShow:
So the show as a whole came out quite well.Whenall of the audiowasaddedintothe software
there wasa little backingmusiclightlyplayingoverthe speechsoitdidn’tsoundtooblandandplain.
Howeveranegative pointwouldbe the variationwiththe audiovolume.Asthere are 3 different
mainvoicesfeaturinginthe showthe audiocontrol washard due to all of us projectingourvoices
differently. Itall fitstogetherquite well though. The littlebitsmade all the difference likethe
backingaudioand the little jingleshereandthere.Ialsofeel the variationinthe storiesworkedwell
as it wasn’tall the same and wouldkeepthe audience more interested.
Outro:
I thenrecordeda little showoutroandpassedon information aboutthe show continuing the next
day whichsoundseffectiveandcatchyso people wouldremembertotune inagainif there was
anothershow.
