Reader/Text Title: ARCHITECTURE OR REVOLUTION Synopsis No: 1
Author: LE CORBUSIER
The article starts off by talking about the revolution of the industrialization towards
modernization in regards to the multiple new problems that have arisen in the present time. The
modern tools were said to help in solving these problems more efficiently as compared to the
tools used during the old days. The question is, do Revolution really helps in solving problems or
are they the cause to our problems?
In the article, the author have given two different scenarios, the first talking about the daily
lifestyle of a man back in the older days and the second is about the lifestyle we live in today. It
is said that the modern tools such as machinery works in close collaboration with man; machine
and man rather than man and man. In relation to the architecture world, we can observe that
machines do most of the job. Because of this, the author stated that there are no real link
between our daily activities with the surroundings that are healthy, useful and productive through
communication and corporation with other people. The thing is, machinery causes the increasing
of demands which leads to the people prioritizing these modern tools more than anything. Now,
think on the other way round, these tools that the industry has created may be able to help in
adding to one’s welfare and lightening the burden that he holds up upon his shoulders. This
leads to Revolution. In architecture, Revolution occurs through the construction industries where
new formulas have been found. There are no longer restrictions on how we should design a
building when during the old days, there are a lot of considerations that architects need to take
account to in terms of the buildability of a building. Therefore, Revolution in terms of the
methodology of constructing a building has helped so much in the architecture world.
In the end, there are the good sides and the bad sides of having Revolution of the
industrialization in the modern era. In the author point of view, he stated that Revolution had
destroyed us in not only through our lifestyles but also the negative effects that comes after that.
However, in my opinion, Revolution can be a good thing especially when we live in the world
where there are so much more to be explored. The negative effects that comes after that can
always be solved through modern technologies. Its just the matter of time.
