Project 2: Messages from the Past
30% marks (20% Group + 10% Individual)
Submission date: 21st April 2016 (Week 11)
Introduction
The terms Historical Reenactment and Living History are often used as synonyms to indicate any practices
through which the participants try to simulate life in a given historical period, portraying people and episodes of
the past and featuring original tools, activities and dresses in an interactive presentation of arts and sciences,
techniques and crafts, textiles and garments, weapons and uniforms, music and dancing, food and drinks,
games and other pastimes, with the aim of improving the knowledge of History and educating other people,
regardless they are fellow participants, scientific researchers or the audience itself –

Objectives
 To examine the culture and civilization of Eastern and Western ancient civilizations.
 To identify the unique elements of Eastern and Western civilizations.
Learning Outcome
 Able to recall the development of Eastern and Western human culture and civilizations in the past as
well as present.
 Able to demonstrate good documentation and presentation skills.
Tasks
Part I: Civilization Study (Group Component)
In a group of 10, you are to investigate the specific given civilization through books and the internet. Your
investigation should cover the following topics:

Religion A Social institution involving beliefs and practices
based on recognizing sacred

Culture The combination of human knowledge, beliefs and
behavior that we learn and pass on to future

any sort of tradition
Art/Architecture Various types of artwork and buildings that express
the talents, beliefs and values of people in society

Technology/
Invention
Tools and skills people use to make life easier Any sorts of invention
created by the people
Group leader will need to establish a link to the group’s Padlet. Each group is required to upload their weekly
progress in Padlet. Progress will be monitored using this platform and presented during tutorial (if needed).
With the investigation that you have conducted, you are then to compile and present the information as a group
in using PowerPoint and choose 1(ONE) culture/tradition that is suitable to be demonstrated in class creatively.
(NOTE: It is advised to divide the topics accordingly within your group to make sure that the all parties are
contributing to the presentation deck.)
Part II: Understanding Character of the Past (Individual Component)
Individually, your task is to select and study on a character in the specific civilization. The outcome of your
study should include the following:
 Introduction of character
 The position in social strata
 Clothing
 Achievement
Submission for Part II would be a journal in A5 size comprises of series of sketches, colored, complete with
annotations. You are also required to package your journals that best reflects the chosen character.
(NOTE: All must be done manually)
Submission Requirement
Part I: Civilization Study (Group Presentation)
1- Generate a presentation slide which reflects all FIVE (5) topics listed in the task section.
2- Demonstrate 1(ONE) culture/tradition from the selected civilization.
3- An A4 report compilation of your investigation in Part I task. The report should include all progress and data
collection of your selected civilization. The report should have a proper cover, assignment title, civilization name,
and group member’s name. Reference for both text and visuals (if any) should be included.
Part II: Understanding Character of the Past (Individual Component)
1-A5 Journal (maximum 4 pages). The journal should include elements stated in Part II task.
2- Journal works must be done manually (hand drawn or collage format).No computer graphic allowed.
3-Referencing and citation of sources is to be inserted at the back of the journal.
You are required to complete and submit Part I and II on the presentation day:

Session 1: 10-12pm (4 groups)
Break:12-12.30pm
Session 2: 12.30-2.30pm (4 groups)
(NOTE: Presentation of each group needs to be recorded and uploaded using proper media into your e-portfolio)
Reminder: Works submitted late will yield 10% mark reduction. For works submitted later than two working days,
no assessment will be done.

The assessment for this assignment will be based on:
 Demonstrated understanding in the culture and civilization of the ancient civilization
 Ability to collect data appropriate to the ancient civilization
 Creativity in presentation
Marking criteria

SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE, BUILDING & DESIGN Research Unit for Modern Architecture Studies in Southeast Asia Foundation of Natural and Built Environments CULTURE & CIVILIZATION (FDES 0815) Prerequisite: None Lecturers: Ida Marlina Mazlan, Sufina Abu Bakar _______________________________________________________________________________________ Project 2: Messages from the Past 30% marks (20% Group + 10% Individual) Submission date: 21st April 2016 (Week 11) Introduction The terms Historical Reenactment and Living History are often used as synonyms to indicate any practices through which the participants try to simulate life in a given historical period, portraying people and episodes of the past and featuring original tools, activities and dresses in an interactive presentation of arts and sciences, techniques and crafts, textiles and garments, weapons and uniforms, music and dancing, food and drinks, games and other pastimes, with the aim of improving the knowledge of History and educating other people, regardless they are fellow participants, scientific researchers or the audience itself – Historiavivens.eu Objectives  To examine the culture and civilization of Eastern and Western ancient civilizations.  To identify the unique elements of Eastern and Western civilizations. Learning Outcome  Able to recall the development of Eastern and Western human culture and civilizations in the past as well as present.  Able to demonstrate good documentation and presentation skills. Tasks Part I: Civilization Study (Group Component) In a group of 10, you are to investigate the specific given civilization through books and the internet. Your investigation should cover the following topics:

Topic Description Remarks Government (Administration) The Authority that rules a particular country Social Strata Religion A Social institution involving beliefs and practices based on recognizing sacred Can include Myth and Belief in this topic Culture The combination of human knowledge, beliefs and behavior that we learn and pass on to future generations Food, Entertainment or any sort of tradition Art/Architecture Various types of artwork and buildings that express the talents, beliefs and values of people in society Writing System/Literature/ Construction Technology/ Invention Tools and skills people use to make life easier Any sorts of invention created by the people Group leader will need to establish a link to the group’s Padlet. Each group is required to upload their weekly progress in Padlet. Progress will be monitored using this platform and presented during tutorial (if needed). With the investigation that you have conducted, you are then to compile and present the information as a group in using PowerPoint and choose 1(ONE) culture/tradition that is suitable to be demonstrated in class creatively. (NOTE: It is advised to divide the topics accordingly within your group to make sure that the all parties are contributing to the presentation deck.) Part II: Understanding Character of the Past (Individual Component) Individually, your task is to select and study on a character in the specific civilization. The outcome of your study should include the following:  Introduction of character  The position in social strata  Clothing  Achievement Submission for Part II would be a journal in A5 size comprises of series of sketches, colored, complete with annotations. You are also required to package your journals that best reflects the chosen character. (NOTE: All must be done manually) Submission Requirement Part I: Civilization Study (Group Presentation) 1- Generate a presentation slide which reflects all FIVE (5) topics listed in the task section. 2- Demonstrate 1(ONE) culture/tradition from the selected civilization. 3- An A4 report compilation of your investigation in Part I task. The report should include all progress and data collection of your selected civilization. The report should have a proper cover, assignment title, civilization name, and group member’s name. Reference for both text and visuals (if any) should be included. Part II: Understanding Character of the Past (Individual Component) 1-A5 Journal (maximum 4 pages). The journal should include elements stated in Part II task. 2- Journal works must be done manually (hand drawn or collage format).No computer graphic allowed.
  • 3. 3-Referencing and citation of sources is to be inserted at the back of the journal. You are required to complete and submit Part I and II on the presentation day: Presentation Day Date: 21st April 2016 (Week 11) Venue: LT7 Session 1: 10-12pm (4 groups) Break:12-12.30pm Session 2: 12.30-2.30pm (4 groups) (NOTE: Presentation of each group needs to be recorded and uploaded using proper media into your e-portfolio) Reminder: Works submitted late will yield 10% mark reduction. For works submitted later than two working days, no assessment will be done. ** Subject to changes (if any and will be announced in class) Assessment criteria The assessment for this assignment will be based on:  Demonstrated understanding in the culture and civilization of the ancient civilization  Ability to collect data appropriate to the ancient civilization  Creativity in presentation Marking criteria Marks shall be distributed as follows: Work will be assessed based on the following assessment criteria: TGC Acquired Assessment Criteria Marks Demonstrated understanding in the culture and civilization of the ancient civilization -ability to develop understanding of the ancient civilization 10 Ability to collect data appropriate to the ancient civilization -able to summarize and present the data effectively 5 Creativity in presentation - Creative methods and techniques in presentation 5 TOTAL 20
