 "Administration” (Latin word)
"ad + ministaire", - to care for,
- to look after people /
- to manage affairs.
 “Sanskrit word”, ‘Pr-sans metals’
- to rule properly.
DEFINITION:
ADMINISTRATION:
 "Administration is the organization and direction of human
and material resources to achieve desired ends"
- Pfiffner and Presthus.
 Administration has to do with getting things done with the
accomplishment of defined objectives.

SCOPE OF ADMINISTRATION :
•Scope is very wide.
•It is not only restricted to public administration that deals
with functionaries.
•It is universal in nature.
•It covers all the areas like schools, hospital, and business
etc.
•It is considered as planning, staffing, organizing,
coordinating & controlling the resources available to
accomplish the goals.
IMPORTANCE OF ADMINISTRATION :
•Life blood of organization.
•Shoulder of an organization.
•Its main function is to achieve the objectives.
•It is like 2 + 2 getting five.
•Without good administration organization is
like a house built on sand or castle in the air.

NURSING ADMINISTRATION :
 Nursing administration is an enabling process for
achieving the laid down goals & objectives of an
institution that is related to nursing, whether it is an
educational institute / private and government
hospital.
 Nursing service administration at any levels of the
principles of administration for the ultimate purpose
of providing nursing service to the individuals.
INTRODUCTION TO MANAGEMENT :
 ‘Management’ is a ‘old French word’.
“menagement” – art of conducting and directing,
 ‘Latin word’ – ‘manu agere’
- to lead by the hand.
MANAGEMENT:-
 Management may be defined as the art of
securing maximum results with a minimum of
effort so as to secure maximum prosperity and
happiness for both employer and employee and
give the public the best possible service.

 Management is distinct process consisting of
planning, organizing, actuating, activating and
controlling, performed to determine and
accomplish the objectives by the use of people and
resources.

NURSING MANAGEMENT :

“The process of working through nursing staff members
to provide care, cure, and comfort to patients.”

“The process of decision – making & control over the
actions of nurses working in various positions in the
hierarchy for the expressed purpose of attaining
predetermined goal of ensuring the quality of patient
care.”
MANAGEMENT AND ADMINISTRATION:
These two words are slightly similar and can employ
interchangeable.
o Management' refers to private sector. Whereas administration refers to
public sector".
