EVOLUTION OF
SOCIAL WORK
EDUCATION IN
INDIA.
PRESENTED BY:
SANKALP SHARMA
MSW SEM 1 (2018-20)
INTRODUCTION.
SOCIAL WORK
EDUCATION AND
INDIGENOUS
KNOWLEDGE.
 AS A STREAM OF HIGHER EDUCATION
SYSTEM, IT IS MORE THAN 100 YEARS
OLD IN THE WORLD AND
 IN INDIA, IT’S PLATINUM JUBILEE WAS
CELEBRATED IN YEAR 2012.
 SOCIAL WORK EDUCATION AS A
PROFESSION IN INDIA IS CONSIDERED AS
AN EMERGING PROFESSION DUE TO
INSUFFICIENT INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE
BASE.
 INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE IS A LOCAL
KNOWLEDGE THAT IS UNIQUE TO A
GIVEN CULTURE OR SOCIETY.
INDIGENIZATION
AND
DEVELOPMENT
OF SOCIAL WORK
EDUCATION IN
INDIA.
 INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE PLACES
EMPHASIS ON INCLUSION, INTER-
CONNECTIVITY AND HOLISTIC WAY OF
BEING.
 IT’S ROLE IN HIGHLIGHTING THE BROAD
CONCERNS SUCH AS EQUALITY,SOCIAL
JUSTICE,HARMONY, ETC IN SUPPORT OF
MARGINALIZED GROUPS TO MEET THEIR
NEEDS.
 FOCUSING ON UGC COMITTEE
REVIEW(1980) RECOMMENDATION ON
DEVELOPMENT OF LOWER LEVEL
TRAINING THAN HIGHER EDUCATION.
 TO GET A BULK OF FRONTLINE
WORKERS TO MAKE IMPACT AND
CONTRIBUTIONS AT GRASSROOT LEVEL.
RECENT ISSUES
OF
SOCIAL WORK
EDUCATION
IN
INDIA.
 COMMERCIALIZATION OF SOCIAL
WORK EDUCATION BY
MUSHROOMING OF PRIVATE
INSTITUTIONS AGAINST THE BASIC
IDEOLOGY OF SOCIAL WORK.
 THESE SCHOOLS ARE SELF-
FINANCED AND HAVE EXPENSIVE
FEE STRUCTURE.
 INCREASING POPULARITY OF
DISTANCE EDUCATION IN SOCIAL
WORK PRODUCING STUDENTS
WITH LOW COMPETENCY LEVEL
 LACK OF EXPOSURE TO
FIELDWORK OR RESEARCH.
 SWE WHO WORTE AND
PUBLISHED THEIR WORK ARE
VERY FEW.
GEOGRAPHICAL
LOCATION
OF
INSTITUTION
OF
SOCIAL WORK
EDUCATION
(ISWE)
IN
INDIA.
 OUT OF 300 ISWE IN INDIA, 67
WERE LOCATED IN
MAHARASHTRA(51 IN
VIDHARBHA REGION ALONE), 60
IN GUJARAT THUS MORE THAN
40 % WERE LOCATED IN THE
WESTERN REGION.
 WITH ONLY 8 ISWE IN NORTH-
EAST REGION (NOT EVEN ONE
ISWE IN EACH STATE).
 THE ISWE DID NOT COVER THE
LENGTH AND BREADTH OF THE
COUNTRY AND WERE MOSTLY
SITUATED IN URBAN UNIVERSITY
CENTERS, GROSSLY NEGLECTING
RURAL AND TRIBAL REGION.
- NNSSW DOCUMENT 2012
(NNSSW- NATIONAL NETWORK OF
SCHOOLS OF SOCIAL WORK)
INSTITUTION
OF
SOCIAL WORK
EDUCATION
(ISWE)
IN
INDIA.
 TATA INSTITUTE OF SOCIAL
SCIENCES(TISS) EARLIER KNOWN AS
SIR DORABJI TATA GRADUATE
SCHOOL OF SOCIAL WORK (1936)
 THE FIRST AND THE ONLY
INSTITUTION THAT OFFERED THE
PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION IN
SOCIAL WORK IN INDIA.(TILL
INDEPENDENCE).
 SECOND INSTITUTION WAS
ESTABLISHED IN DELHI FOR
TRAINING IN SOCIAL WORK AND
WAS THE FIRST INSTITUTION
AFFILIATED TO UNIVERSITY SYSTEM.
 SOCIAL WORK EDUCATION STARTED
EXPANDING WITH MANY
CENTRAL,STATE,PRIVATE,DEEMED
UNIVERSITIES INITIATED
BACHELOR’S, MASTER’S AND
DOCTORAL PROGRAMS.
SOCIAL WORK
EDUCATOR
(SWE)
-AS
BEARER OF
KNOWLEDGE
AN ACADEMICIAN,FACULTY MEMBER OR
TEACHER WHO HOLDS A PRESCRIBED
SOCIAL WORK QUALIFICATION AND HAS
BEEN ENGAGED IN
TEACHING,RESEARCH AND FIELDWORK
SUPERVISION IN A RECOGNIZED SOCIAL
WORK EDUCATION INSTITUTION.
 IN INDIA SWE’S ARE EXPECTED TO
PLAY THE MAJOR ROLE OF
KNOWLEDGE GENERATOR,
CONSULTANT THAN BEING MERE
PRACTICE WISDOM TEACHER.
 SWE’S PLAY A PIVITOL ROLE IN
IDENTIFYING AND EXPLAINING THE
KNOWLEDGE THAT CAN GUIDE
STUDENTS FOR SOCIAL WORK
PRACTICE.
CONCLUSION.
ON SOCIAL WORK EDUCATION’S
EVOLUTION IN INDIA ,
IT WILL BE INAPPROPRIATE TO SAY
THAT SOCIAL WORK EDUCATOR’S
HAVE NOT RESPONDED TO THE
NEED OF INDIGENIZING SOCIAL
WORK KNOWLEDGE.
AT PRESENT, THE TIME IS
APPROPRIATE FOR THE GROWTH
OF IKB (INDIGENIOUS KNOWLEDGE
BASE) AS, CONTINUOUS EFFORTS
ARE BEING MADE BY INDIAN SOCIAL
WORK PROFESSIONALS TO
GENERATE INDIGENOUS
KNOWLEDGE FOR SOCIAL WORK
EDUCATION AND TRAINING.
