3. HISTORY
China is the birth place of silk . It was found almost about 6,000 years
ago. According to the legend once a lady His-Lin-Shih (she is a
queen) was having tea under a mulberry tree when a cocoon fell in
her tea. While she was opening the cocoon, she realized that the
cocoon could be used as a weaving thread. Thus a industry was
born. She taught people how to raise silkworms and later invented
the loom. Silk was produced at a large scale during the Shang
Dynasty (1600BC-1046BC)
Silk was kept a secret for more than 200 years by the Chinese. It was
a very zealously guarded secret in history. Anyone found guilty for
smuggling was put to death. It was worn by the extremely Upper
class. Sericulture began to reach outside world first Korea then Japan
, India and finally Europe.
