The intent was to offer the young couple owners a contemporary
home surrounded by innovative designs. The overall concept
and layout of the project were adapted to the dynamic lifestyle
of the family living here. A series of smart solutions have
been implemented. Each inch of the house has been used
cleverly. The living room, living terrace, children’s room, master
bedroom and master bedroom terrace where the spaces to
be redesigned. Since the couple were young and hip some
very contemporary ideas were suggested to them. They were
convinced to open up the old partitions and let the private lift
open up directly into their living room. This allowed them to have
a stylish entry for the guests into their house while entertaining.
The clients were film fanatics too. To cater to this interest a
projector with a massive screen was installed on the terrace.

The screen rolls up into a sleek slot when not in use. A green

This enabled them to have maximum utility of their terrace
floor space without compromising on the green space. A
functioningfloweringherbgardenwitharejuvenatingpatiofor
an evening soiree was rendered to them. The living room can
be completely opened up to the terrace outside with foldable
glass panels. In the master bedroom the ceiling was painted
a grey shade. The black mirrors over the head board make the
room appear larger and give it an edgy contemporary look.
Large windows and white walls make the space feel bright
and open. The exterior has a sturdy appearance that matches
its surroundings. For the soft furnishing a variety of patterns
in rugs and pillows were used to accent neutral couches
and beds. This project was conceptualized, designed,
successfully executed and handed over in just 2.5 months.
The influence of three important aspects creates the foundation of the
design: comfort, multi-functionality, and cosmopolitanism. The large
array of colors and textures contribute to a powerful dynamic. Natural
lighting comes in through the windows in every room through sheer
curtains. Taking inspiration from various styles and natural materials, a
friendly atmosphere with a distinguished sense of style was achieved.
The house is designed for a young couple with two children. To keep the
budget low most of their old furniture was repurposed and reused. The
terrace was completely redesigned. A shaded area was introduced so
that the terrace could be used more often. In this house four bedrooms,
living room and the terrace which were redesigned. The walls, ceiling and

work that they collected on their travels was used in the house. The two

As a freelance interior designer I have also taken up small individual
room projects. Some of them have come as projects from the designers
I worked with earlier. All of these projects have been in Bombay. These
projects were done is a quick span of a few weeks. Bright colours
have been used in the fabrics whereas the walls have a sober palette.
Various materials for dry wall cladding have been used. The soft
furnishing, quirky furniture pieces, art work and final finish is what
adds a punch to the eclectic style of these rooms. The aim in these
projects was to transform a space and personalize it, in order to make it
valuable and eventually precious. Most of these spaces were for young
single individuals. The idea was to create a youthful and dynamic,
yet unpretentious living environment to match the client’s lifestyle.

▪▪ Facade Redesign for Commercial Building, Mumbai, India (Facade
Area: 2,340sqm)
This is a 20 year old building belonging to the second most widely
read newspaper company in Kerala. The building has changed
functions over the years ranging from a printing factory to an office
to a radio station office. I was involved in the façade redesign and
revamping the site. Firstly a thorough site investigation was done to
note the hazardous and problem areas. Appropriate solutions were
provided for the safety of the end users. Solutions to use the site and
building more efficiently were given and executed. The parking area,
terrace and building services we redesigned for maximum efficiency.
After this the building façade was redesigned in congruence with the
interior functions. A detailed study of contemporary façade materials
were done including the ones most commonly used in Kerala. We
procured quotations for the same from various agencies to fit into the
stipulated budget. An efficient façade system was developed keeping
the strength and structure of the building in mind. The total revised
façade read is 1400sqf. This project is currently in construction phase.

Private Residence in Salogra,
Himachal Pradesh, India
Salogra is a picturesque small town in the Solan District which offers
breathtaking views of the majestic mountains rich with pine and
deodar trees. It is also known for its scenic trekking routes. The client
had an existing house in Salogra. Over the years he acquired the
land along with the buildings adjoining his house. Unfortunately a
lot of these adjoining buildings stood out as a sore thumb in this
quaint location hiding the beauty of the mountains behind them.

Not only did we design a new house for him on the newly acquired site
but also proposed a redesign for the existing buildings. The client was
keen on getting the structure up in short period of six months. Thus a
clean minimal modern barn with a steel structure was proposed. We kept
the form of rural architecture alive with a contemporary language. This
is an example of how a barn can be reinterpreted in our contemporary
times, keeping a simplistic, yet dynamic structure. Despite its barn-like
shape, the house has also typical Himachal home details, reflecting the
vernacular architecture. The home’s floor-to-ceiling windows work in
conjunction with the cantilevered floor overhang bring in and capture
heat from the low winter sun and shade the home from summer rays. The
roof is also designed to harvest rainwater. The language of clean lines
was followed through to the overhangs, skylights, double heights and
decks. The lower level / public area of the house are kept transparent.
The upper level / private areas are more solid and opaque with large
picture windows. Inside the home we have simple furnishings with
modern, clean lines. Windows in all rooms allow the home to fully take
advantage of its idyllic location, where you can look out over the serene.

Verandas embellish the ground floor, showcasing a series of interesting
openings. The design of this space heightens the senses: it breathes,
and is animated by light and air. The threshold between the interior
and exterior is constantly blurred. The surrounding units were designed
in congruence with the main house. Purity and simplicity are at the
basis of the design. The design delivered a flowing open-plan internal
space that avoids compartmentalization and opens up to reveal
the splendor and scale of the barn and its form. The houses were
positioned such that they each have a visual connection with the other
and with the surrounding vista. We also focused on bring down the
height of the existing units so that view to the mountains behind could
be opened up. Every window in each house captures a picturesque
view of the surrounding. The total site area is 5,000sqm. Five houses
were designed in total. The project is in design development stage.

Urban Residence in Pune, Maharashtra, India
Taking advantage of the great climate in Pune, the generous plot of land and level of the
site, this urban dwelling was developed with a brief to be comfortable, warm but open to its
surrounding. The resulting design sees a single volume that runs parallel with one of its sides
open completely to the lush garden landscape occupying the other side. The living room opens
completely, to a sheltered patio and establishing a seamless connection to the outdoor space.
This subtle transition between inside and outside, between architecture and garden is continued
throughout, with the central circulating space featuring courtyard and lounge area. Bedrooms
are located on the first floor connected by a walkway to the puja that bisects the double-height
foyer. The puja area overlooks the entrance of the house and itsvisitors. An introvert composition
was developed, which turns its back on the city to face the private spaces. The courtyard with its
tree acts as a fulcrum to integrate the private and public spaces. Strict Vastu Shastra principals
were followed in the overall planning of the house. Being health conscious they were very
keen on having a dedicated club house close to the private part of the house. The roof and
deck lines lend form to the house and anything in between is kept transparent and light. The
large hangovers let the clients to use the outside of the house as much as the indoor areas.

The historic buildings within Lower Parel’s repurposed mill
lands have been given new meaning as a social and cultural
meeting place. This restaurant is bang in the middle of the
renovated mills compound and other redefined spaces.
This light, clean look is a perfect complement to efforts
to reinvigorate the formerly industrial area. The site has
beautiful north light trusses which have been maintained
and reused. Natural light cascades in from skylights
on the north-facing roof pitches. The ceiling geometry
which intersects with the original warehouse roof trusses
contains the electrical and mechanical services. The client
and chef intended to serve country-style Thai food; hence
the inspiration for the space is the Thai paddy fields. We
clad the walls with faux glass to introduce this effect. The
warmth and lightness in the space is further highlighted
by the cane lanterns. Austere materials were employed for
the design: solid concrete, exposed wood and cold white
and grey colors. Exposed wooden truss add originality to
the clean, contemporary design. The color - white, wood
and gray accents - adds to the spacious feel. The resulting
interior beautifully complements the historic neighborhood
and the food that is served. The restaurant seats 82 persons.
A mezzanine houses office, store and a private dining area.

This studio office was design by HCP design studio for
India’s leading composite manufacturer of textiles. We were
appointed to do the interior design for the studio. The studio
is an independent, rectangular, single-storey structure
located in a garden within the mill compound. The building
is constructed in concrete and the fair-face surface which
contributed greatly as a design feature, which we used as
the base for the interior design too. The architecture was
bare and minimal and the interiors reflect the same. We used
clean minimal lines and materials in their raw form for the
interiors. Most of the fabrics used were produced from the
company itself. The light fittings were custom designed for
each area. The electrical layout was issued to the architects
during the construction stage. A restrained material palette
has been used throughout the scheme with reinforced
concrete utilized for slabs and vertical surfaces. In contrast,
warmer wooden tones have been used for dividing elements.
Everything here seems casual, raw, professional and friendly
at the same time. An array of textures makes the space
particularly dynamic. Exposed concrete, metal and raw wood
are merged in unexpected ways, delivering fresh interiors
with a twist. Chairs clad in geometric patterns and bright
colors add charm to the overall scheme. The paintings and
graphicartalso contribute to thevivid character ofthisoffice.

This was an urban residence for the same clients after we designed
their studio office. From a small outhouse the design brief changed
into a home for three generations, two dogs and few birds living under
one roof. The project’s starting point was the couple’s desire to have
a house that integrates the landscape, combined with functionality
and aesthetics. Every area can be fully opened up to the outside
with sliding glass panels to the deck and then the garden. This
brings the serene atmosphere of the garden inside, giving a sense
of openness. It also adds some color and life to the clean minimalist
design. The residence was designed from the outside in; through large
openings and skylights, it values natural lighting and ventilation.

The house was designed around the site conditions and the existing tress. The major
consideration in the design was to blend the relationship of the interior and exterior, so
not as to distinguish the living spaces and the landscaped gardens but to bring them
together. The defining feature of the space is the deck and pergolas. The design for the
deck section plays interestingly with sunlight and shadow using a slatted roof and
reflective pool. Belts of light create beautiful shadows on the walls and decks that reflect
the passage of time. They also provide much needed shade. The pergola transforms this
space into a space for family to congregate. The clients were also very keen on having
the house with a water bodies to attract various animals and birds. The dry and hot
climate of Ahmedabad also allows for spaces to be cooled by surrounding water bodies.
Thus the microclimate was modified by the vegetation and water bodies around. Many
green practices such as waste water management, VRV AC system and solar energy were
introduced. Rainwater and roof tank overflow water was harnessed for recycling and reuse.

Broken China mosaic glazed tiles from local factory as roof top finish was used to reflect the Ahmedabad heat. Large
overhangs covered the decks to cut off the heat of the sun entering the house. One can enjoy wonderful moments,
watching the sun at dusk or drink a cup of coffee in the morning, on the terrace and the many deck areas around the
house. The clients are collectors of art. Plenty of blank large walls were left to house their art collection. The cut outs
in the extended walls are designed to frame a view. The deck beams are recessed to give the house a buoyant feel.
The house seems to just float over the pond. There is a continuation of the internal space; to the deckthen garden and

The client wanted to design the house such that it could be used on time
sharing bases. His vision was to have experimental homes away from
the main city which people could rent for a few months to a few years.
This was to be the first prototype of many such homes in the vicinity.
Each room of the house was designed to act as an independent unit
with privacy, its own water body and lawn area. Just the living, dining
areas and kitchen were kept common. However during the construction
a family showed interest and bought the villa. The family of three
generations was to use this house as their holiday / weekend home.
The design goal had switched from the original needs into a larger
interconnected space that could accommodate a new and growing
family. The personality of each person was reflected in their room.

The space for teenage children had a very young and contemporary
vibe, while the parent’s room had a more sober vibe. The home has an
inspiring and relaxing home environment, which enhances the feeling
of freedom and breeziness. Even though you are sitting comfortable in
your living room, on the couch you get the best view: you see the garden,
mountains and the sky. Every room has sliding floor-to-ceiling windows
instead of walls, allowing the sun to floor it with warmth and light.
This further opens onto the deck and a plunge pool followed
by the garden. Every bathroom has its own outdoor shower
too. The paintings on the walls and the colourful rugs, though,
transform it into a more interesting and contemporary home.
The result: a playful, creative and bright modern interior.

The clients were to use a property on Ashwem beach as part of the popular
Sunburn Music Festival. Since the property abutted the beach we decided
build permanent structure only on the rear part of the property. The rear
end of the plot has 25 villas. The restaurant is also positioned away
from the beach yet facing it. The approach to the beach is an interesting
mix of water bodies, pools, decks, walkways and green spaces. There
is no actual built structure on the beach front. The idea was to have the
design really clean and simple, so it didn’t distract from the view. One
was expected to look outward and take in the exterior. The challenge
was to keep a minimalist design so customers could enjoy the landscape
and the beach environment the site offered. The idea was to mix white
with wood to give the restaurant a stylish and relaxing atmosphere. The
design inspiration came from the amazing scene of the Arabian Sea where
the blue sea and the white sands make people feel relaxing and fresh.

Kingdon of Sheba Hotel & Al Balqis
Residence, Palm Jumeirah, Dubai,
UAE
Certain to become a significant landmark as one of the largest and most
ambitious projects on The Palm Jumeirah, the Kingdom of Sheba is a
two-phased development. At the heart of project is Balqis Residence: a
collection of villas, townhouses, penthouses and apartments that make
up the three hundred superb residences offering a wealth of lifestyle and
investment choices to discerning buyers. A beach club, several pools,
luxurious landscaping, shops, restaurant and convenience store are
planned for the same. Gracing The Crescent, on 141,500 square metres
of prime land, the Kingdom of Sheba is adjacent to the trailblazing
Atlantis. Reminiscent of Arabia’s ancient cities, the Kingdom of Sheba
was to have a sense of history and grandeur. The construction reflects
the traditional values and symmetry that are inherent in all Yemeni art
forms. The entire development was designed with people in mind and
the primary focus was on convenience and outstanding facilities. The
contemporary elegance of the living spaces, the fabulous furnishings
and fittings, the inviting outdoor areas and surrounding greenery,
the sea and the beach, all contribute to a lifestyle of consummate
quality. I was responsible for the construction detailing of the entire
building elevation and the design execution of the free hold villas.

and the Sea of Oman, Al Bustan Palace, A Ritz-Carlton
Hotel is a hidden jewel amongst luxury hotels in Muscat,
Oman, a beachfront retreat that welcomes guests with
customs steeped in ancient traditions and contemporary
comfort. Due to growing tourism in Oman and new 5 star
hotels, Al Bustan was facing a lot of competition. In 2006
they decided to close down for renovation and also to
add few restaurants, gym facility and aqua sport pavilion.

glass windows allow this play to continue into the interior spaces thus
blurring the line between the inside and outside. The major consideration
in the design wasto blend the relationship ofthe interior with the naturally
scenic exterior. The interior was redesigned to accommodate a restaurant.

Beach Restaurant: The hotel had no bar or restaurant on the beach, which
isquitetheflavorofaholidaytoday.Arestaurantwasaddedincongruence
with the existing layout. The restaurant is oriented to get the best view of
the sea and the surrounding terrain. The language of the restaurant is kept
simple, natural yet elegant. The site condition facilitated the dining area
to romantically face a beautiful natural outcrop on the site and the bar to
face the clean blue water and the beach. The main access of the restaurant
is the only pronounced feature which is oriented to the stunning view of
the sea. The rest of the architectural features are light and transparent

almost blending in with the surroundings. A combination
of glass and timer louvers is used in response to the hot
and humid climate of Muscat. The challenge was the
make the building effortlesslyblend with the surrounding
and not impose itself on the natural terrain. This was
achieved through the simplicity of design and choice
of building material resulting in a space where one
dines on the sandy carpet of the beach under the stars.

tennis club - front viewform study
Tennis Club: At the Al Bustan Hotel there was no gym facility. However
there was an existing changing area adjoining the tennis courts. This
area was selected to house the new sports and gym facilities. The old
building could not accommodate all the new functions; thus it was
torn down leaving the rear intact which had retractable seating for the
tennis court. This was the starting point of the design. The gym facility
is raised up by a floor to get an unobstructed view of the beach & the
sea. The space below doubles as a covered seating for the tennis
courts and offers a view to the beach and mountains ahead. At night
this structure seems afloat. This block is intersected by the transparent
staircase block, which gives rise to an overall strong architectural form.

Aqua Sport Pavilion: The guests at the Al Bustan Hotel can relax on the
pristine stretch of private beach. Oman is a haven for lovers of sun and
nature, with unspoiled beaches & tropical seas. The hotel started various
activities in and around the resort. With a 3,165-kilometre-long coastline
and sparkling clean waters, there is a wealth of underwater flora, marine
life and diving thrills awaiting the most avid underwater explorer. For
the guest to take advantage of these facilities we designed the aqua
sort pavilion. This housed all the water sport equipment, toilets and life
guard and first aid facilities. This was a small non imposing structure
on the beach. The design intent was to make the structure look like a
pavilion. Vertical wooden slats were used as the design feature so that
structure is almost transparent and blends in with the surrounding.

Tatweer Real Estate Headquarters,
Dubailand, Dubai
Tatweer are a Dubai company involved in real estate development
and were undertaking a selection process that would culminate in the
appointment of a design team. This was a completion project based on
Request for a Proposal (RFP) where invited Design Architects submit
their design proposals. Bawadi is a 10 km long by 1.8km wide double
curvature strip lying on the western side of Dubailand comprising of
a variety of hotels, leisure, sport, entertainment, recreational and
shopping facilities. The concept of this project is to create a building
that will be the first point of contact for visitors, investors and potential
investors when visiting the site. This structure would hous the core
tatweer sales team of 10 staff it will also house other project staff of up
to 40 people. The intention was that the building is temporary albeit it
may be in place for some years. Some thought was given to make the
building demountable and relocatable using appropriate materials
and constructions methods. The building was designed to have good
natural lighting, be energy efficient and create a positive environment
for business. Modern building technology like concrete slab, steel frame,
lightweightinsulated cladding and roofing, double glazing with aluminum
louvers external shading, lightweight internal partitioning were used.

The project was a competition entry for DAMAC properties
located in the Burj district of Dubai. It is a 5p+32 floors
serviced residential apartment on a site area of 4,163 sqm.
It was the developer’s vision to create a unique building
which stands out in the area. The building was to be of an
iconic nature in terms of design and should be a landmark in
the area. The target market group was singles, families and
high income expatriates and GCC nationals. The intent was
to create a building with a strong, imposing form and at the
same time the functionality should not be compromised. The
process started with a strong unconventional form which was
superimposed to form an interesting composition. This was
donewiththeintentionthateachfloorplatewouldbedifferent
from the other. The challenge wasto integrate each floor plate
with the external form. This resulted in interesting balcony
spaces for each apartment which grew or reduced in size.

Residential Apartments in Amman,
Jordan
Abdali is Amman’s new downtown that provides the Jordanian capital
with the central business, social and residential destination it needs
as a regional business and tourism hub. Abdali is a unique endeavor
in smart urban planning where business, living and leisure smoothly
intertwine to create a model of modernization in the Kingdom and
the region. We were the concept architects for the project, which
would be taken to design development and execution by a local
architect in Amman. The floor plate areas for the buildings were:
Block A – 27M X 27M,
Block B – 28M X 32M,
Block C – 1430 SQM.

The house belongs to the architect couple Nimish Patel and Parul Zaveri.
The architects are well known for their work and contribution to green
and sustainable design. The intent was to have a simple home respecting
environment & nature and following the principles of Vastu Shastra. They
wanted to maximize the use of traditional materials, methods, technology
and craftsmen in the execution and achieve human comfort levels in all
spaces with minimum use of electrical & mechanical energies. Passive
energy systems with glass exhaust shafts on the periphery helps in
generating upward movement of hot air even when all windows of the
house are closed which in turn pulls the air from all the rooms & spaces
which draw the fresh air from the concourse. Traditional concoction of
gur, gugal & methi was used to achieve better binding & water proofing
properties. Lime was used as mortar, colored plaster & screens in the
garden. Earthen pots were used to provide the insulation on the terrace.

  • 3. vertical garden in the terrace before apartment images living room Penthouse in Khar, Mumbai, India The intent was to offer the young couple owners a contemporary home surrounded by innovative designs. The overall concept and layout of the project were adapted to the dynamic lifestyle of the family living here. A series of smart solutions have been implemented. Each inch of the house has been used cleverly. The living room, living terrace, children’s room, master bedroom and master bedroom terrace where the spaces to be redesigned. Since the couple were young and hip some very contemporary ideas were suggested to them. They were convinced to open up the old partitions and let the private lift open up directly into their living room. This allowed them to have a stylish entry for the guests into their house while entertaining. The clients were film fanatics too. To cater to this interest a projector with a massive screen was installed on the terrace.

This enabled them to have maximum utility of their terrace floor space without compromising on the green space. A functioningfloweringherbgardenwitharejuvenatingpatiofor an evening soiree was rendered to them. The living room can be completely opened up to the terrace outside with foldable glass panels. In the master bedroom the ceiling was painted a grey shade. The black mirrors over the head board make the room appear larger and give it an edgy contemporary look. Large windows and white walls make the space feel bright and open. The exterior has a sturdy appearance that matches its surroundings. For the soft furnishing a variety of patterns in rugs and pillows were used to accent neutral couches and beds. This project was conceptualized, designed, successfully executed and handed over in just 2.5 months.
  • 6. The influence of three important aspects creates the foundation of the design: comfort, multi-functionality, and cosmopolitanism. The large array of colors and textures contribute to a powerful dynamic. Natural lighting comes in through the windows in every room through sheer curtains. Taking inspiration from various styles and natural materials, a friendly atmosphere with a distinguished sense of style was achieved. The house is designed for a young couple with two children. To keep the budget low most of their old furniture was repurposed and reused. The terrace was completely redesigned. A shaded area was introduced so that the terrace could be used more often. In this house four bedrooms, living room and the terrace which were redesigned. The walls, ceiling and floorshavebeenleftwhitesothatthespacelooksbigandairy.Alotsofart work that they collected on their travels was used in the house. • 9. As a freelance interior designer I have also taken up small individual room projects. Some of them have come as projects from the designers I worked with earlier. All of these projects have been in Bombay. These projects were done is a quick span of a few weeks. Bright colours have been used in the fabrics whereas the walls have a sober palette. Various materials for dry wall cladding have been used. The soft furnishing, quirky furniture pieces, art work and final finish is what adds a punch to the eclectic style of these rooms. The aim in these projects was to transform a space and personalize it, in order to make it valuable and eventually precious. Most of these spaces were for young single individuals. The idea was to create a youthful and dynamic, yet unpretentious living environment to match the client’s lifestyle. Individual Rooms, Mumbai, India living room interior bedroom interior

  • 14. This is a 20 year old building belonging to the second most widely read newspaper company in Kerala. The building has changed functions over the years ranging from a printing factory to an office to a radio station office. I was involved in the façade redesign and revamping the site. Firstly a thorough site investigation was done to note the hazardous and problem areas. Appropriate solutions were provided for the safety of the end users. Solutions to use the site and building more efficiently were given and executed. The parking area, terrace and building services we redesigned for maximum efficiency. After this the building façade was redesigned in congruence with the interior functions. A detailed study of contemporary façade materials were done including the ones most commonly used in Kerala. We procured quotations for the same from various agencies to fit into the stipulated budget. An efficient façade system was developed keeping the strength and structure of the building in mind. The total revised façade read is 1400sqf. This project is currently in construction phase. exterior view 01 Facade Redesign for Commercial Building, Kerala, India

Private Residence in Salogra, Himachal Pradesh, India Salogra is a picturesque small town in the Solan District which offers breathtaking views of the majestic mountains rich with pine and deodar trees. It is also known for its scenic trekking routes. The client had an existing house in Salogra. Over the years he acquired the land along with the buildings adjoining his house. Unfortunately a lot of these adjoining buildings stood out as a sore thumb in this quaint location hiding the beauty of the mountains behind them. house 01 - exterior view 01

  • 20. house 02 - exterior view Not only did we design a new house for him on the newly acquired site but also proposed a redesign for the existing buildings. The client was keen on getting the structure up in short period of six months. Thus a clean minimal modern barn with a steel structure was proposed. We kept the form of rural architecture alive with a contemporary language. This is an example of how a barn can be reinterpreted in our contemporary times, keeping a simplistic, yet dynamic structure. Despite its barn-like shape, the house has also typical Himachal home details, reflecting the vernacular architecture. The home’s floor-to-ceiling windows work in conjunction with the cantilevered floor overhang bring in and capture heat from the low winter sun and shade the home from summer rays. The roof is also designed to harvest rainwater. The language of clean lines was followed through to the overhangs, skylights, double heights and decks. The lower level / public area of the house are kept transparent. The upper level / private areas are more solid and opaque with large picture windows. Inside the home we have simple furnishings with modern, clean lines. Windows in all rooms allow the home to fully take advantage of its idyllic location, where you can look out over the serene.

The design of this space heightens the senses: it breathes, and is animated by light and air. The threshold between the interior and exterior is constantly blurred. The surrounding units were designed in congruence with the main house. Purity and simplicity are at the basis of the design. The design delivered a flowing open-plan internal space that avoids compartmentalization and opens up to reveal the splendor and scale of the barn and its form. The houses were positioned such that they each have a visual connection with the other and with the surrounding vista. We also focused on bring down the height of the existing units so that view to the mountains behind could be opened up. Every window in each house captures a picturesque view of the surrounding. The total site area is 5,000sqm. Five houses were designed in total. The project is in design development stage.

  • 25. Urban Residence in Pune, Maharashtra, India Taking advantage of the great climate in Pune, the generous plot of land and level of the site, this urban dwelling was developed with a brief to be comfortable, warm but open to its surrounding. The resulting design sees a single volume that runs parallel with one of its sides open completely to the lush garden landscape occupying the other side. The living room opens completely, to a sheltered patio and establishing a seamless connection to the outdoor space. This subtle transition between inside and outside, between architecture and garden is continued throughout, with the central circulating space featuring courtyard and lounge area. Bedrooms are located on the first floor connected by a walkway to the puja that bisects the double-height foyer. The puja area overlooks the entrance of the house and itsvisitors. An introvert composition was developed, which turns its back on the city to face the private spaces. The courtyard with its tree acts as a fulcrum to integrate the private and public spaces. Strict Vastu Shastra principals were followed in the overall planning of the house. Being health conscious they were very keen on having a dedicated club house close to the private part of the house. • 28. The historic buildings within Lower Parel’s repurposed mill lands have been given new meaning as a social and cultural meeting place. This restaurant is bang in the middle of the renovated mills compound and other redefined spaces. This light, clean look is a perfect complement to efforts to reinvigorate the formerly industrial area. The site has beautiful north light trusses which have been maintained and reused. Natural light cascades in from skylights on the north-facing roof pitches. The ceiling geometry which intersects with the original warehouse roof trusses contains the electrical and mechanical services. The client and chef intended to serve country-style Thai food; hence the inspiration for the space is the Thai paddy fields. We clad the walls with faux glass to introduce this effect. The warmth and lightness in the space is further highlighted by the cane lanterns. Austere materials were employed for the design: solid concrete, exposed wood and cold white and grey colors. Exposed wooden truss add originality to the clean, contemporary design. The color - white, wood and gray accents - adds to the spacious feel. The resulting interior beautifully complements the historic neighborhood and the food that is served. The restaurant seats 82 persons. A mezzanine houses office, store and a private dining area. We were appointed to do the interior design for the studio. The studio is an independent, rectangular, single-storey structure located in a garden within the mill compound. The building is constructed in concrete and the fair-face surface which contributed greatly as a design feature, which we used as the base for the interior design too. The architecture was bare and minimal and the interiors reflect the same. We used clean minimal lines and materials in their raw form for the interiors. Most of the fabrics used were produced from the company itself. The light fittings were custom designed for each area. The electrical layout was issued to the architects during the construction stage. A restrained material palette has been used throughout the scheme with reinforced concrete utilized for slabs and vertical surfaces. In contrast, warmer wooden tones have been used for dividing elements. Everything here seems casual, raw, professional and friendly at the same time. An array of textures makes the space particularly dynamic. Exposed concrete, metal and raw wood are merged in unexpected ways, delivering fresh interiors with a twist. Chairs clad in geometric patterns and bright colors add charm to the overall scheme. The paintings and graphicartalso contribute to thevivid character ofthisoffice. From a small outhouse the design brief changed into a home for three generations, two dogs and few birds living under one roof. The project’s starting point was the couple’s desire to have a house that integrates the landscape, combined with functionality and aesthetics. Every area can be fully opened up to the outside with sliding glass panels to the deck and then the garden. This brings the serene atmosphere of the garden inside, giving a sense of openness. It also adds some color and life to the clean minimalist design. The residence was designed from the outside in; through large openings and skylights, it values natural lighting and ventilation. • 40. view of the house from the pond entrance walk way The house was designed around the site conditions and the existing tress. The major consideration in the design was to blend the relationship of the interior and exterior, so not as to distinguish the living spaces and the landscaped gardens but to bring them together. The defining feature of the space is the deck and pergolas. The design for the deck section plays interestingly with sunlight and shadow using a slatted roof and reflective pool. Belts of light create beautiful shadows on the walls and decks that reflect the passage of time. They also provide much needed shade. The pergola transforms this space into a space for family to congregate. The clients were also very keen on having the house with a water bodies to attract various animals and birds. The dry and hot climate of Ahmedabad also allows for spaces to be cooled by surrounding water bodies. Thus the microclimate was modified by the vegetation and water bodies around. Many green practices such as waste water management, VRV AC system and solar energy were introduced. Rainwater and roof tank overflow water was harnessed for recycling and reuse.

Large overhangs covered the decks to cut off the heat of the sun entering the house. One can enjoy wonderful moments, watching the sun at dusk or drink a cup of coffee in the morning, on the terrace and the many deck areas around the house. The clients are collectors of art. Plenty of blank large walls were left to house their art collection. The cut outs in the extended walls are designed to frame a view. The deck beams are recessed to give the house a buoyant feel. The house seems to just float over the pond. There is a continuation of the internal space; to the deckthen garden and beyondthat,thewaterbodies/plungepoolandfinallyfollowingintothenaturalcontoursofthegenerousplotofland.

His vision was to have experimental homes away from the main city which people could rent for a few months to a few years. This was to be the first prototype of many such homes in the vicinity. Each room of the house was designed to act as an independent unit with privacy, its own water body and lawn area. Just the living, dining areas and kitchen were kept common. However during the construction a family showed interest and bought the villa. The family of three generations was to use this house as their holiday / weekend home. The design goal had switched from the original needs into a larger interconnected space that could accommodate a new and growing family. The personality of each person was reflected in their room. • 44. master bedroom deck master bedroom plunge pool entrance courtyard daughter’s room The space for teenage children had a very young and contemporary vibe, while the parent’s room had a more sober vibe. The home has an inspiring and relaxing home environment, which enhances the feeling of freedom and breeziness. Even though you are sitting comfortable in your living room, on the couch you get the best view: you see the garden, mountains and the sky. Every room has sliding floor-to-ceiling windows instead of walls, allowing the sun to floor it with warmth and light. This further opens onto the deck and a plunge pool followed by the garden. Every bathroom has its own outdoor shower too. The paintings on the walls and the colourful rugs, though, transform it into a more interesting and contemporary home. The result: a playful, creative and bright modern interior.

Since the property abutted the beach we decided build permanent structure only on the rear part of the property. The rear end of the plot has 25 villas. The restaurant is also positioned away from the beach yet facing it. The approach to the beach is an interesting mix of water bodies, pools, decks, walkways and green spaces. There is no actual built structure on the beach front. The idea was to have the design really clean and simple, so it didn’t distract from the view. One was expected to look outward and take in the exterior. The challenge was to keep a minimalist design so customers could enjoy the landscape and the beach environment the site offered. The idea was to mix white with wood to give the restaurant a stylish and relaxing atmosphere. The design inspiration came from the amazing scene of the Arabian Sea where the blue sea and the white sands make people feel relaxing and fresh. Resort in Ashwem, Goa, India

The construction reflects the traditional values and symmetry that are inherent in all Yemeni art forms. The entire development was designed with people in mind and the primary focus was on convenience and outstanding facilities. The contemporary elegance of the living spaces, the fabulous furnishings and fittings, the inviting outdoor areas and surrounding greenery, the sea and the beach, all contribute to a lifestyle of consummate quality. I was responsible for the construction detailing of the entire building elevation and the design execution of the free hold villas. site location plan kingdom of sheba, hotel - view

Keepingthebuildingstructureintactwedesignedanelevation/extension for the restaurant in congruence with the existing surrounding. We gave a double roof option with vast pergolas and plenty of spill-out and deck spaces. Thedesignfortheroofsectionplaysinterestinglywithsunlightand shadowusingthepergolasandreflectivepool.Beltsoflightcreatebeautiful shadows on the walls and decks that reflect the passage of time. The large glass windows allow this play to continue into the interior spaces thus blurring the line between the inside and outside. The major consideration in the design wasto blend the relationship ofthe interior with the naturally scenic exterior. The interior was redesigned to accommodate a restaurant.

A combination of glass and timer louvers is used in response to the hot and humid climate of Muscat. The challenge was the make the building effortlesslyblend with the surrounding and not impose itself on the natural terrain. This was achieved through the simplicity of design and choice of building material resulting in a space where one dines on the sandy carpet of the beach under the stars.

  • 68. tennis club - front viewform study Tennis Club: At the Al Bustan Hotel there was no gym facility. However there was an existing changing area adjoining the tennis courts. This area was selected to house the new sports and gym facilities. The old building could not accommodate all the new functions; thus it was torn down leaving the rear intact which had retractable seating for the tennis court. This was the starting point of the design. The gym facility is raised up by a floor to get an unobstructed view of the beach & the sea. The space below doubles as a covered seating for the tennis courts and offers a view to the beach and mountains ahead. At night this structure seems afloat. This block is intersected by the transparent staircase block, which gives rise to an overall strong architectural form.

Oman is a haven for lovers of sun and nature, with unspoiled beaches & tropical seas. The hotel started various activities in and around the resort. With a 3,165-kilometre-long coastline and sparkling clean waters, there is a wealth of underwater flora, marine life and diving thrills awaiting the most avid underwater explorer. For the guest to take advantage of these facilities we designed the aqua sort pavilion. This housed all the water sport equipment, toilets and life guard and first aid facilities. This was a small non imposing structure on the beach. The design intent was to make the structure look like a pavilion. Vertical wooden slats were used as the design feature so that structure is almost transparent and blends in with the surrounding.

  • 72. conceptual view Tatweer Real Estate Headquarters, Dubailand, Dubai Tatweer are a Dubai company involved in real estate development and were undertaking a selection process that would culminate in the appointment of a design team. This was a completion project based on Request for a Proposal (RFP) where invited Design Architects submit their design proposals. Bawadi is a 10 km long by 1.8km wide double curvature strip lying on the western side of Dubailand comprising of a variety of hotels, leisure, sport, entertainment, recreational and shopping facilities. The concept of this project is to create a building that will be the first point of contact for visitors, investors and potential investors when visiting the site. This structure would hous the core tatweer sales team of 10 staff it will also house other project staff of up to 40 people. The intention was that the building is temporary albeit it may be in place for some years. Some thought was given to make the building demountable and relocatable using appropriate materials and constructions methods. The building was designed to have good natural lighting, be energy efficient and create a positive environment for business. Modern building technology like concrete slab, steel frame, lightweightinsulated cladding and roofing, double glazing with aluminum louvers external shading, lightweight internal partitioning were used.

It was the developer’s vision to create a unique building which stands out in the area. The building was to be of an iconic nature in terms of design and should be a landmark in the area. The target market group was singles, families and high income expatriates and GCC nationals. The intent was to create a building with a strong, imposing form and at the same time the functionality should not be compromised. The process started with a strong unconventional form which was superimposed to form an interesting composition. • 83. glass exhaust on front elevationground floor plan interior view 01 The house belongs to the architect couple Nimish Patel and Parul Zaveri. The architects are well known for their work and contribution to green and sustainable design. The intent was to have a simple home respecting environment & nature and following the principles of Vastu Shastra. They wanted to maximize the use of traditional materials, methods, technology and craftsmen in the execution and achieve human comfort levels in all spaces with minimum use of electrical & mechanical energies. Passive energy systems with glass exhaust shafts on the periphery helps in generating upward movement of hot air even when all windows of the house are closed which in turn pulls the air from all the rooms & spaces which draw the fresh air from the concourse. Traditional concoction of gur, gugal & methi was used to achieve better binding & water proofing properties. Lime was used as mortar, colored plaster & screens in the garden. Earthen pots were used to provide the insulation on the terrace. Residence for Parul Zaveri, Ahmedabad, India
