Electricity Safety
Parts List
Brainstorming
It’s cold in winter, and many of us may turn
on the electric heaters to warm ourselves; however,
electric heaters consume a lot of power, which may result
in wires discharging accidentally and even a fire disaster due
to careless use. Therefore, we must buy the qualified electric appliances,
correctly assemble them and observe their safety specifications. For instance, we
should not use extension cords and use more than four hours at a time,
to get both warmth and safety.
Many people hear about the story of Franklin’s kite, he is the scientist who
proved that lightning belongs to common electricity via flying kites on a
rainy day. But what you don’t know is that not all of his many experiments
went smoothly.
Once upon a time, Franklin invited his friends to have an exquisite electric
toasted turkey. In order to show his new invention, he planned to kill a
turkey via electric shock and then roast it with the electric grill that he
invented. However, he got an electricity shock accidentally and fainted on
the scene while connecting the turkey with electricity.
Franklin is the one who knows electricity best at that time. He planned
to roast a turkey but nearly got injured due to his fault, so he always
reminded people about the importance of electricity safety.
Kids, electricity facilitates our daily life
remarkably, but do
abide by electricity
safety measures
when using it.
What are dangerous ways of
using electricity in life and what
disasters may result from them?

Electric Charge
Parts List
Brainstorming
In a winter evening when we take off
our chemical fiber sweaters, we may hear the
crackle and see tiny sparkles, which is actually the
phenomenon called friction charging. In history, Franklin first
found out that the glass rod rubbing against silk carried positive charge
and the rubber rubbing against furs carried negative charge. It is generally
believed there are only two kinds of charges in nature, which are named positive
charge and negative charge respectively. The interaction between
charges are that opposite charges attract and like charges repel.
What kinds of materials in our
daily life can conduct electricity?
Helen and her family visited the American National Park with a tour group.
It began to grow dark on the day they scheduled to climb mountains, but
all visitors were in high spirits and still decided to climb the mountain peak
to appreciate the natural scenes.
Suddenly Helen found her hair standing up, and she immediately asked
her mother to take a photo of her, so that she can post it on her Facebook
and share this interesting experience. At that moment, the tour guide blew
the whistle and urged everyone to hurry toward the bus.
After getting on the bus, the tour guide explained that their hair stood up
because the dark clouds were charging (energy) and it was a warning from
nature. As soon as he stopped, lightning and thunder erupted. Everyone
felt lucky that they weren’t struck by it.
Kids, have your hair ever stood up suddenly
under natural
conditions?

Electric Current
Parts List
Brainstorming
Electric current is quite similar to water
flow, so people analyze the given information
about water flow comparing it with electric current to
study its characteristics, which is named as analogy. Analogy
is to compare the similarity between two things so as to learn the
unfamiliar things on the basis of known ones. Since we know well about
water flow, the analogy between water flow and electric currents helps
us learn electric current effectively. For instance, water flow is the flow
state of water while electric current is the flow state of charge.

In the late 18th century, an Italian doctor Galvani dissected a frog and
accidentally found that the frog legs convulsed violently when touching
the exposed nerves of the legs with his scalpel. He felt quite surprised at
the phenomenon and started to research, contributing to our knowledge
of bioelectricity.
Physicist Volta devoted himself to the study of the contact between two
different metals based on the Galvanic Experiment, finding that the frog
legs would not generate electricity but only react. Later, Volta immersed
cloth into a salt solution and then clipped it between zinc and silver
circular plates to form a column, and connected a conducting wire to
the top silver circular plate and bottom zinc circular plates, thus the first
battery was invented. Consequently, the scientists could employ constant
stable current to conduct various electricity
researches, leading to great development in this
area.

The river water falls from high mountains and
finally into the ocean; water from a water tower flows
to each household via water pipes. It’s not hard for us to find
water always coming from a higher place and going to a lower one,
and the water level difference is defined as hydraulic head or hydraulic
pressure. With the analogy method in scientific researches, we can apply the
concepts of hydraulic head to studies on electricity, thus the potential
level differences is named as potential difference or voltage. Voltage
urges charges to flow from a higher potential level to a lower level.
Why is high-voltage electricity
used for power transmission?
Both Walter and Tony are fond of baseball leagues and they often
play baseball in the clearing. Once, Walter missed a fly ball which
rebounded from his mitt and fell in a strange area surrounded by a net
enclosure.
Walter was going to reach for the ball but Tony stopped him. Tony
pointed at the special sign above the enclosure and asked Walter: “Do
you know what this is?” Walter shook his head.
Tony told Walter it was a warning sign of high-voltage electricity, so
the place must be a substation, and it would be no laughing matter if
they got an electric shock. Finally, both of them decided to give up the
baseball and never play there again.
Kids, places close to high-voltage
electricity are quite dangerous, so you
must be careful.

Characters are symbols developed
for communication of human beings, for
instance, we often use emoticons when
chatting online to express our feelings. The universal
symbols can enhance communication and facilitate learning, such
as music notes and mathematic symbols. Circuit symbols are pictorial
symbols designed for different electric components in circuit diagrams,
such as lamps, batteries, switches, etc.
Seeing their neighbors’ family were burglarized, everyone went to buy a
burglar alarm in the supermarkets for the sake of family security. However,
Paul’s father thought it was too expensive, so he decided to search for
a circuit of simple alarm online and purchase materials specified in the
circuit diagram.
Paul was curious to know why his father is working in his study recently,
so he approached his father, asking why he assembled as per the circuits.
His father told him that he assembled according to the instructions where
circuit symbols were shown. Paul was proud of his father and wanted to
learn these symbols.

Christmas was in sight, Grandpa Rudolph took Helen to stroll in the
little park and appreciate the colorful Christmas lights decorating the
trees and pavilions. There were also many other electric appliances
making the whole park lively.
Helen had learned some elementary knowledge about electricity and
circuits, and she thought there might be a lot of learning behind the
glorious decorations, so she asked her Grandpa. Grandpa Rudolph
praised her for her love of learning and told her a simple circuit was
enough to light these lamps, with fantastic lighting change.
Kids, if you were the color lights
designer of the park, can you make
a simple circuit for lighting a lamp?
Are there switches for the lamps
in the park? How will you design
the switches?
To ensure the appliance can receive the
electric energy provided by power, we must use
a wire to form a closed loop by connecting power and the
appliance, by which current can flow into the closed loop. The
conducting loop consisting of metal wires and electric components
is called a circuit. A simple circuit consists of power, switch, wire and
appliance, and a simple circuit with a lamp can make it light up.

What appliances with lamps that
light up are there in our daily
life?
Nowadays, people can’t live without electricity.
In this era of rapid developing technologies, it is hard
not to use household appliances such as washer, water
heater, refrigerator, electric fan in our daily life. When enjoying
the convenience brought by various appliances owing to advanced
technologies, we should also pay attention to the correct use. Choose the
energy-saving and low-carbon one when purchasing a new product.
Due to the soaring electricity bills, Paul’s mother can’t help stomping when
receiving the bills recently. Although the family has tried every method of
power saving, the amount saved was still limited, yet they can’t find the
causes.
Once, when his mother was cooking in the kitchen, Paul found that the
interior lights would light up whenever his mother opened the refrigerator,
so he told his mother he found the reason for the expensive electric bill,
it was because the refrigerator lights were on. Paul could hardly wait to
disassemble the lights.
After Paul's father came back, he asked Paul to install
the lights back and observe them via opening the
refrigerator door slowly. Paul took a peek inside the
refrigerator finding it was dark inside, and the lights
turned on when the door was opened wider. Father told
him it was because the refrigerator required power to
supply the out-flowing cool air.
Kids, do the lamps turn on when
the refrigerator door is closed?

The circuit application along roads are
represented by red and green lights, namely, traffic
lights. There are generally three colors, red, yellow and
green. The lights are installed in the necessary locations and
change within a specified time to guide passing vehicles and
pedestrians, serving as traffic control measures.
Paul always wakes up late in the morning, so his father has to drive
hurriedly to send him to school. It would be okay if they have a smooth trip,
but they may be late if they chance upon a lot of red lights.
One day, Paul woke up late again because he watched cartoons and went
to bed late the night before.
After finishing his breakfast hurriedly, father drove Paul to school in a
hurry. Unfortunately, they kept coming to red lights all the way. Seeing he
is going to be late, Paul can’t help crying and spoke out : “it wouldn’t be so
annoying if it were green lights all the way to school! ”
Father replied: “Paul hopes we just encounter green lights so that we
would not be late, but if this is the case, other people will encounter only
red lights, thus there may be many other
children crying for being late.”

Grandpa Rudolph found Tony staring blankly at his desk, so he
approached him and asked Tony what happened. Tony said he had
no inspiration for the composition and didn’t know what to do.
Grandpa Rudolph said jokingly: “the Tony who always has a lot of
inspiration disappears today and loses his way in a maze, and his
inspirations fade away like the lamp. People in ancient times were
quite clear that inspirations come and go without leaving a trace.
Then what can we do? Just like a hunter is hunting for a sly prey,
what will Tony do?”
Tony replied there would be opportunities if we mastered habits.
Grandpa Rudolph was glad and nodded his head : “Exactly! Although
inspirations are unpredictable like a sly prey,
they may emerge in certain places, like the
ancient people often got inspiration in bed,
on horseback and on the toilet.”
Kids, you can have
a try if you have no
inspiration next time.
There are so many electr ic
equipment in our house, how
does the circuit connect them?
A circuit connection is to correctly connect
the wires with all components, making sure the
circuit components can exert their desired functions.
For instance, a short circuit may destroy the power and
sometimes result in fire disasters due to accidental discharge.
Moreover, the power can’t supply energy regularly if the wire fails to
connect the entire circuit, thus the components won’t work because
of a lack of electricity.

What activities or mechanisms
have a similar pattern with the
series connection in our life?
A long electric torch requires two or three
batteries which are installed with the positive
pole first, thus the batteries are series connected
via positive and negative poles. Such a connection mode is
called series connection, and the corresponding circuit is named
series circuits, in which the voltage provided equals to the sum total of
voltage at the two ends of each component.
Tony and Walter entered their names for the mountain-climbing activities.
That day, after they entered the mountain with the mountaineering team,
they were confronted with stiff palisades.
After asking everyone to be seated, the team leader explained that the
following journey would be difficult and there was only one climbing
rope, so they should climb with the rope one by one. Although it required
no professional climbing skills, they should work in unison. Once the one
ahead fell down carelessly, the one behind shall hold him with hands or
shoulders. The falling strength would be great even though everyone
had the security hooks, so it would be better to hold the falling one at
the very beginning, by which the severe accident of falling down serially
could be avoided. They could reach the mountain peak safely if they
follow the leader’s directions.
Tony and Walter soon learned the common
ground between series actions and series
circuits from the mountain-climbing activity, that
is, the whole team may
go wrong as long as
one part goes wrong.

Parallel Circuit
Parts List
Brainstorming
What activities or mechanisms
have a similar pat ter n with
parallel connections in our life?
Most of the rambler sockets in our family
are a kind of parallel circuit of sockets, each
of them can provide the same voltage, making the
appliances with the same voltage specification able to connect
with power supply and operate under normal voltage. Parallel
connection connects two ends of several components with two nodes
respectively, and the circuit of a parallel connection is called a parallel
circuit. The current provided by power equals to the current sum of each
component, and the voltage equals to the one of each component.
Helen asked her mother to read a bedtime story for her in the evening,
and mother read the story of Peter Pan.
Peter Pan was a boy who wouldn’t grow up and can fly between
Neverland and the human world. After encountering Wendy, Peter Pan
wanted to take her to Neverland, so he flew with Wendy hand in hand.
Wendy enjoyed the fantastic flight but she couldn’t fly alone freely. “I
have no wings, so I can’t fly” Wendy said. And Peter Pan replied : “It’s
all right to have no wings, you can also fly when you recall the happy
things in your mind.” So they experienced
the glorious adventures of being attacked by
monsters and pirates.
Kids, if circuit components were connected like
hand in hand and foot by foot, it is a parallel
circuit.

Multiple Circuit
Parts List
Brainstorming
The circuit designs in our life are
quite complicated. What multiple
circuits can you associate?
In the distribution box, the one above is the
master switch, which adopts the series circuit, so all
lamps will not power up if it is turned off. The rest of the
switches control the power supply of certain areas, which
won’t interfere with others, belonging to the parallel circuit. So all
switches in the distribution box are in the multiple circuits consisting of
series and parallel circuits.
After attending school, Paul found he had fewer time to play with his
father, so his father and Paul often took a stroll after supper. During
their stroll, father often told him stories of his childhood. Paul loves
the father-son time.
One day when they walked under the moon, Paul suddenly found
the road under his feet darker, and discovered that a lamp was not
working. He stopped and looked around, finding that all lamps were
working except the one in front of him. So he asked curiously why the
damaged lamp didn’t affect the others.
Father praised his careful observation and told him that lamps are
connected in a parallel circuit, so the rest
of the lamps can still work even though
one of them is broken. Moreover, several
lamps are divided in a zone via a series
switch. Therefore, a circuit including both
series and parallel
circuits forms a
multiple circuit.

Circuit Control
Parts List
Brainstorming
Segway is a motor-driven personal vehicle
with an internal circuit controlling the self-balance,
ensuring it moves steadily, just a mobile version of roly-
poly. The invention is inspired by the idea that human beings can
walk upright, which is because our internal organs can judge the change
in the center of gravity and then control the leg muscles to restore
balance.
What equipments in life are
controlled by circuits?
B3-16A
“Mom, watch out! Someone is shaking flags and flashing lights!” Tony
is quite thoughtful, who always pays attention to the road condition
rather than playing with his mobile phone, and reminds others in case of
emergencies. This time was no exception.
After hearing his warning, mother switched lanes to avoid the person.
Tony found out it was not really a person shaking flags in tidy suits when
their vehicle passed by. Though the time was short, Tony found out that
the “robot” could shake red flags, and believed it might be driven by
electricity but not caused by wind blowing.
After getting home, Tony asked his father about the robot, and father told
him it was actually driven by motor and there must by a circuit control
inside, so that he could make the movement of
shaking flags.
Kids, if you find a false person waving a flag on
site or on the road, do be
careful because it means
danger.

If an electric equipment fails to
work, how can we figure out the
causes?
01

04Generally, volt-ohm-milliammeter is
used for circuit test to check the three
basic physical quantities of current, voltage and
resistance, hence the name volt-ohm-milliammeter. But
if an electric equipment is not operating temporarily and there is no
volt-ohm-milliammeter available, we can make a simple electroscope
like Tony did, by which we may perhaps find the problems.
Walter has an exquisite electric toy tank he loves most and he is reluctant
to share it with other kids.
One day, when Tony came to his home, Walter showed off his toy chariot,
but he found the gunturret not rotating and the tank not working. It was
still normal when he played with it the day before, why could it be broken
today? Walter was frightened and had no idea what to do.
Tony said he could check the problems, so he found a small lamp
and some wires from the toys, making a simple electroscope. He first
connected the battery and the lamp lighted up, so he confirmed the
battery had no problems. Next, he connected the wiring on both sides
of the motor with the electroscope, finding that the lamp didn’t work.
Therefore, Tony guessed there was something wrong in the wiring, so
the motor couldn’t receive power to work. Finally, they found the wire
dropout.
After Tony reconnected the wiring, the tank was
restored. Walter was quite
appreciative of Tony’s
h e l p, s o h e p l a y e d
happily with Tony.

careless operation of appliances.
Can you name some examples?
A safety circuit is an automatic protection
system in emergency conditions. It can sense
the potential danger and take necessary measures to
reduce the risks, but it doesn’t mean it is perfect . For instance,
an elevator installed with a safety circuit may be stopped from falling
down when the automatic brake is triggered if elevator excesses the
setting speed due to cable rupture or elevator faults.
Helen traveled to Europe independently in her summer vocation. She
decided to experience the beauty of the city by light rail for she had never
seen a light rail with only two carriages.
After boarding the light rail vehicle, she enjoyed the street scenes that are
different from what was shown in the movies. Suddenly, she felt a strong
impact and fell down; after she stood up again, she found out that the
vehicle had derailed.
After returning to the hotel and watching the news on TV, she learned
that the vehicle was controlled manually without any safety facilities such
as speed limitation device and automatic brakes installed. The vehicle
was running at full speed in the straight sections, and the driver failed to
brake in advance when coming to the turns, so
the train was easily derailed due to over speed
turning.
Kids, do you know that installing an automatic
brake in vehicles can avoid
the accidents caused by
overspeeding?

Intelligent Circuits
Parts List
Brainstorming
There are a lot of intelligent electrical
apparatus that are convenient to
use. Can you name some of them?
The buildings and architectures nowadays
are specified to have fire-alarm equipment installed
to guarantee the safety of people. Inside the fire-alarm there
are intelligent circuits which are able to detect the smoke density
and temperature change in environments. For example, if someone has to
leave the kitchen while he is cooking and forgets to cut off the fire, fire
disasters may occur. To remind the residents early, it is quite necessary
to install fire-alarm devices in the kitchen.
Paul likes imagining his future occupation and always took his father’s
hands while his father was reading newspapers and asked about the
future world. One day, his father was beat and made Paul seat down
to talk about the future world.
Father told him the future world would be an intelligent world of
electricity. All electric devices can be connected together just like the
linkage of computers to the internet, by which a connecting pipe is
established in the world and the condition of being with each other
though far apart can be realized preliminarily.
Besides, all electric devices are equipped with intelligent circuits in
the future. Any situations that are supposed to not happen will be
transformed into abnormal signals and sent
to the control center instantly as well as the
owner’s smart phone or other smart devices,
to realize the remote alarm.

  • 3. S e s s i o n 01 Electricity Safety Parts List Brainstorming It’s cold in winter, and many of us may turn on the electric heaters to warm ourselves; however, electric heaters consume a lot of power, which may result in wires discharging accidentally and even a fire disaster due to careless use. Therefore, we must buy the qualified electric appliances, correctly assemble them and observe their safety specifications. For instance, we should not use extension cords and use more than four hours at a time, to get both warmth and safety. Many people hear about the story of Franklin’s kite, he is the scientist who proved that lightning belongs to common electricity via flying kites on a rainy day. But what you don’t know is that not all of his many experiments went smoothly. Once upon a time, Franklin invited his friends to have an exquisite electric toasted turkey. In order to show his new invention, he planned to kill a turkey via electric shock and then roast it with the electric grill that he invented. However, he got an electricity shock accidentally and fainted on the scene while connecting the turkey with electricity. Franklin is the one who knows electricity best at that time. He planned to roast a turkey but nearly got injured due to his fault, so he always reminded people about the importance of electricity safety. Kids, electricity facilitates our daily life remarkably, but do abide by electricity safety measures when using it. What are dangerous ways of using electricity in life and what disasters may result from them? 4 20 x2 x2 x1 19 43 48 55 x1 x1 x2 x1 x1 22 23 54 x1 01 03 02 04 Electric Current Avoider Note: remove the coating of enamelled wire first. • 5. S e s s i o n 02 Electric Charge Parts List Brainstorming In a winter evening when we take off our chemical fiber sweaters, we may hear the crackle and see tiny sparkles, which is actually the phenomenon called friction charging. In history, Franklin first found out that the glass rod rubbing against silk carried positive charge and the rubber rubbing against furs carried negative charge. It is generally believed there are only two kinds of charges in nature, which are named positive charge and negative charge respectively. The interaction between charges are that opposite charges attract and like charges repel. What kinds of materials in our daily life can conduct electricity? Helen and her family visited the American National Park with a tour group. It began to grow dark on the day they scheduled to climb mountains, but all visitors were in high spirits and still decided to climb the mountain peak to appreciate the natural scenes. Suddenly Helen found her hair standing up, and she immediately asked her mother to take a photo of her, so that she can post it on her Facebook and share this interesting experience. At that moment, the tour guide blew the whistle and urged everyone to hurry toward the bus. After getting on the bus, the tour guide explained that their hair stood up because the dark clouds were charging (energy) and it was a warning from nature. As soon as he stopped, lightning and thunder erupted. Everyone felt lucky that they weren’t struck by it. Kids, have your hair ever stood up suddenly under natural conditions? 1 2 9 Holding Flag x1 x2 x1 x2 x2x2 x1 x2 x4 x1 x1 x1 x11 x2 x2x1 x1 x1 4 6 10 19 20 21 24 25 27 43 53 12 15 5 54 01 03 02 04 Daily Application 09 10

  • 7. S e s s i o n 03 Electric Current Parts List Brainstorming Electric current is quite similar to water flow, so people analyze the given information about water flow comparing it with electric current to study its characteristics, which is named as analogy. Analogy is to compare the similarity between two things so as to learn the unfamiliar things on the basis of known ones. Since we know well about water flow, the analogy between water flow and electric currents helps us learn electric current effectively. For instance, water flow is the flow state of water while electric current is the flow state of charge. W hat are t he inf luenc e s of electric current intensity on electric products? 01 03 02 04 In the late 18th century, an Italian doctor Galvani dissected a frog and accidentally found that the frog legs convulsed violently when touching the exposed nerves of the legs with his scalpel. He felt quite surprised at the phenomenon and started to research, contributing to our knowledge of bioelectricity. Physicist Volta devoted himself to the study of the contact between two different metals based on the Galvanic Experiment, finding that the frog legs would not generate electricity but only react. Later, Volta immersed cloth into a salt solution and then clipped it between zinc and silver circular plates to form a column, and connected a conducting wire to the top silver circular plate and bottom zinc circular plates, thus the first battery was invented. Consequently, the scientists could employ constant stable current to conduct various electricity researches, leading to great development in this area. • 9. S e s s i o n 04 Voltage Parts List Brainstorming The river water falls from high mountains and finally into the ocean; water from a water tower flows to each household via water pipes. It’s not hard for us to find water always coming from a higher place and going to a lower one, and the water level difference is defined as hydraulic head or hydraulic pressure. With the analogy method in scientific researches, we can apply the concepts of hydraulic head to studies on electricity, thus the potential level differences is named as potential difference or voltage. Voltage urges charges to flow from a higher potential level to a lower level. Why is high-voltage electricity used for power transmission? Both Walter and Tony are fond of baseball leagues and they often play baseball in the clearing. Once, Walter missed a fly ball which rebounded from his mitt and fell in a strange area surrounded by a net enclosure. Walter was going to reach for the ball but Tony stopped him. Tony pointed at the special sign above the enclosure and asked Walter: “Do you know what this is?” Walter shook his head. Tony told Walter it was a warning sign of high-voltage electricity, so the place must be a substation, and it would be no laughing matter if they got an electric shock. Finally, both of them decided to give up the baseball and never play there again. Kids, places close to high-voltage electricity are quite dangerous, so you must be careful. 2 4 13 Fly Owls x3 x1 x1 x1 x2 x4 x8 x2 x2 x1 x1 x1 x1 x2 x2 x2 x2 x2 x1 6 9 10 19 20 21 24 26 28 35 41 43 12 14 16 01 03 02 04 Daily Application 1817

  • 12. S e s s i o n 06 Circuit Symbols Parts List Brainstorming Characters are symbols developed for communication of human beings, for instance, we often use emoticons when chatting online to express our feelings. The universal symbols can enhance communication and facilitate learning, such as music notes and mathematic symbols. Circuit symbols are pictorial symbols designed for different electric components in circuit diagrams, such as lamps, batteries, switches, etc. Seeing their neighbors’ family were burglarized, everyone went to buy a burglar alarm in the supermarkets for the sake of family security. However, Paul’s father thought it was too expensive, so he decided to search for a circuit of simple alarm online and purchase materials specified in the circuit diagram. Paul was curious to know why his father is working in his study recently, so he approached his father, asking why he assembled as per the circuits. His father told him that he assembled according to the instructions where circuit symbols were shown. Paul was proud of his father and wanted to learn these symbols. • 14. S e s s i o n 07 Simple Circuit Parts List Brainstorming Christmas was in sight, Grandpa Rudolph took Helen to stroll in the little park and appreciate the colorful Christmas lights decorating the trees and pavilions. There were also many other electric appliances making the whole park lively. Helen had learned some elementary knowledge about electricity and circuits, and she thought there might be a lot of learning behind the glorious decorations, so she asked her Grandpa. Grandpa Rudolph praised her for her love of learning and told her a simple circuit was enough to light these lamps, with fantastic lighting change. Kids, if you were the color lights designer of the park, can you make a simple circuit for lighting a lamp? Are there switches for the lamps in the park? How will you design the switches? To ensure the appliance can receive the electric energy provided by power, we must use a wire to form a closed loop by connecting power and the appliance, by which current can flow into the closed loop. The conducting loop consisting of metal wires and electric components is called a circuit. A simple circuit consists of power, switch, wire and appliance, and a simple circuit with a lamp can make it light up. 2 9 15 Little Park x1 x2 x1 x1 x2 x2 x3 x1 x2 x2 x2 x1 x1 x5 x1 x1 x2 x2 6 10 19 20 21 24 38 43 44 47 48 54 12 13 5 01 03 02 04 Daily Application 27 28

  • 16. S e s s i o n 08 Household Appliances Parts List Brainstorming What appliances with lamps that light up are there in our daily life? Nowadays, people can’t live without electricity. In this era of rapid developing technologies, it is hard not to use household appliances such as washer, water heater, refrigerator, electric fan in our daily life. When enjoying the convenience brought by various appliances owing to advanced technologies, we should also pay attention to the correct use. Choose the energy-saving and low-carbon one when purchasing a new product. Due to the soaring electricity bills, Paul’s mother can’t help stomping when receiving the bills recently. Although the family has tried every method of power saving, the amount saved was still limited, yet they can’t find the causes. Once, when his mother was cooking in the kitchen, Paul found that the interior lights would light up whenever his mother opened the refrigerator, so he told his mother he found the reason for the expensive electric bill, it was because the refrigerator lights were on. Paul could hardly wait to disassemble the lights. After Paul's father came back, he asked Paul to install the lights back and observe them via opening the refrigerator door slowly. Paul took a peek inside the refrigerator finding it was dark inside, and the lights turned on when the door was opened wider. Father told him it was because the refrigerator required power to supply the out-flowing cool air. There are generally three colors, red, yellow and green. The lights are installed in the necessary locations and change within a specified time to guide passing vehicles and pedestrians, serving as traffic control measures. Paul always wakes up late in the morning, so his father has to drive hurriedly to send him to school. It would be okay if they have a smooth trip, but they may be late if they chance upon a lot of red lights. One day, Paul woke up late again because he watched cartoons and went to bed late the night before. After finishing his breakfast hurriedly, father drove Paul to school in a hurry. Unfortunately, they kept coming to red lights all the way. Seeing he is going to be late, Paul can’t help crying and spoke out : “it wouldn’t be so annoying if it were green lights all the way to school! ” Father replied: “Paul hopes we just encounter green lights so that we would not be late, but if this is the case, other people will encounter only red lights, thus there may be many other children crying for being late.” Pa u l a n s we r e d: “I see. • 21. S e s s i o n 11 Circuit Connection Parts List Brainstorming Grandpa Rudolph found Tony staring blankly at his desk, so he approached him and asked Tony what happened. Tony said he had no inspiration for the composition and didn’t know what to do. Grandpa Rudolph said jokingly: “the Tony who always has a lot of inspiration disappears today and loses his way in a maze, and his inspirations fade away like the lamp. People in ancient times were quite clear that inspirations come and go without leaving a trace. Then what can we do? Just like a hunter is hunting for a sly prey, what will Tony do?” Tony replied there would be opportunities if we mastered habits. Grandpa Rudolph was glad and nodded his head : “Exactly! Although inspirations are unpredictable like a sly prey, they may emerge in certain places, like the ancient people often got inspiration in bed, on horseback and on the toilet.” Kids, you can have a try if you have no inspiration next time. There are so many electr ic equipment in our house, how does the circuit connect them? A circuit connection is to correctly connect the wires with all components, making sure the circuit components can exert their desired functions. For instance, a short circuit may destroy the power and sometimes result in fire disasters due to accidental discharge. Moreover, the power can’t supply energy regularly if the wire fails to connect the entire circuit, thus the components won’t work because of a lack of electricity. 1 11 21 Lamp Maze 6 19 20 22 23 36 37 41 43 45 47 48 49 53 54 12 8 x4 x1 x2 x2 x3 x4 x4 x1 x1 x2 x2 x2 x3x2 x6 x1 x2 x1 x1 x2 01 03 02 04 Note: prepare a sheet of Aluminium foil. • 23. S e s s i o n 12 Series Circuit Parts List BrainstormingSupport the Frontline What activities or mechanisms have a similar pattern with the series connection in our life? A long electric torch requires two or three batteries which are installed with the positive pole first, thus the batteries are series connected via positive and negative poles. Such a connection mode is called series connection, and the corresponding circuit is named series circuits, in which the voltage provided equals to the sum total of voltage at the two ends of each component. Tony and Walter entered their names for the mountain-climbing activities. That day, after they entered the mountain with the mountaineering team, they were confronted with stiff palisades. After asking everyone to be seated, the team leader explained that the following journey would be difficult and there was only one climbing rope, so they should climb with the rope one by one. Although it required no professional climbing skills, they should work in unison. Once the one ahead fell down carelessly, the one behind shall hold him with hands or shoulders. The falling strength would be great even though everyone had the security hooks, so it would be better to hold the falling one at the very beginning, by which the severe accident of falling down serially could be avoided. They could reach the mountain peak safely if they follow the leader’s directions. Tony and Walter soon learned the common ground between series actions and series circuits from the mountain-climbing activity, that is, the whole team may go wrong as long as one part goes wrong. 19 20 21 24 48 x3 x2 x2 x2 x1 x2 2 01 03 02 04 Daily Application 45 46

  • 25. S e s s i o n 13 Parallel Circuit Parts List Brainstorming What activities or mechanisms have a similar pat ter n with parallel connections in our life? Most of the rambler sockets in our family are a kind of parallel circuit of sockets, each of them can provide the same voltage, making the appliances with the same voltage specification able to connect with power supply and operate under normal voltage. Parallel connection connects two ends of several components with two nodes respectively, and the circuit of a parallel connection is called a parallel circuit. The current provided by power equals to the current sum of each component, and the voltage equals to the one of each component. Helen asked her mother to read a bedtime story for her in the evening, and mother read the story of Peter Pan. Peter Pan was a boy who wouldn’t grow up and can fly between Neverland and the human world. After encountering Wendy, Peter Pan wanted to take her to Neverland, so he flew with Wendy hand in hand. Wendy enjoyed the fantastic flight but she couldn’t fly alone freely. “I have no wings, so I can’t fly” Wendy said. And Peter Pan replied : “It’s all right to have no wings, you can also fly when you recall the happy things in your mind.” So they experienced the glorious adventures of being attacked by monsters and pirates. Kids, if circuit components were connected like hand in hand and foot by foot, it is a parallel circuit. 1 4 11 Anti-theft Indicator x4 x4 x4 x3 x1 x1 x1 x1 x2 x1 x2 x2 x1 x4 x13 x2 x2 x2 x1 2 6 9 19 20 21 22 37 40 43 48 12 13 5 53 54 01 03 02 04 Daily Application 49 50

  • 27. S e s s i o n 14 Multiple Circuit Parts List Brainstorming The circuit designs in our life are quite complicated. What multiple circuits can you associate? In the distribution box, the one above is the master switch, which adopts the series circuit, so all lamps will not power up if it is turned off. The rest of the switches control the power supply of certain areas, which won’t interfere with others, belonging to the parallel circuit. So all switches in the distribution box are in the multiple circuits consisting of series and parallel circuits. After attending school, Paul found he had fewer time to play with his father, so his father and Paul often took a stroll after supper. During their stroll, father often told him stories of his childhood. Paul loves the father-son time. One day when they walked under the moon, Paul suddenly found the road under his feet darker, and discovered that a lamp was not working. He stopped and looked around, finding that all lamps were working except the one in front of him. So he asked curiously why the damaged lamp didn’t affect the others. Father praised his careful observation and told him that lamps are connected in a parallel circuit, so the rest of the lamps can still work even though one of them is broken. Moreover, several lamps are divided in a zone via a series switch. Therefore, a circuit including both series and parallel circuits forms a multiple circuit. 1 6 12 Weight Checker x4 x4 x4 x3 x2 x1x1 x3 x3 x4 x2 x1 x2 x1 x2 x1 x23x1 x1 x4 x1 x2 2 9 10 19 20 21 22 23 24 26 177 43 45 47 48 49 53 54 01 03 02 04 Daily Application 53 54

  • 30. S e s s i o n 16 Circuit Control Parts List Brainstorming Segway is a motor-driven personal vehicle with an internal circuit controlling the self-balance, ensuring it moves steadily, just a mobile version of roly- poly. The invention is inspired by the idea that human beings can walk upright, which is because our internal organs can judge the change in the center of gravity and then control the leg muscles to restore balance. What equipments in life are controlled by circuits? B3-16A “Mom, watch out! Someone is shaking flags and flashing lights!” Tony is quite thoughtful, who always pays attention to the road condition rather than playing with his mobile phone, and reminds others in case of emergencies. This time was no exception. After hearing his warning, mother switched lanes to avoid the person. Tony found out it was not really a person shaking flags in tidy suits when their vehicle passed by. Though the time was short, Tony found out that the “robot” could shake red flags, and believed it might be driven by electricity but not caused by wind blowing. After getting home, Tony asked his father about the robot, and father told him it was actually driven by motor and there must by a circuit control inside, so that he could make the movement of shaking flags. Kids, if you find a false person waving a flag on site or on the road, do be careful because it means danger. x3 x1 x1 x2x2 x3 x1 x1 x1 x1 x1 x8 x1 x2 x2 x1 x2 2 6 9 10 x2 19 20 21 22 23 24 35 38 43 52 53 54 x1 18 5 7 Change-over Switch 12 x2 x1 12 01 03 02 04 Daily Application 5959 60

  • 32. S e s s i o n 17 Circuit Test Parts List Brainstorming If an electric equipment fails to work, how can we figure out the causes? 01 03 02 04Generally, volt-ohm-milliammeter is used for circuit test to check the three basic physical quantities of current, voltage and resistance, hence the name volt-ohm-milliammeter. But if an electric equipment is not operating temporarily and there is no volt-ohm-milliammeter available, we can make a simple electroscope like Tony did, by which we may perhaps find the problems. Walter has an exquisite electric toy tank he loves most and he is reluctant to share it with other kids. One day, when Tony came to his home, Walter showed off his toy chariot, but he found the gunturret not rotating and the tank not working. It was still normal when he played with it the day before, why could it be broken today? Walter was frightened and had no idea what to do. Tony said he could check the problems, so he found a small lamp and some wires from the toys, making a simple electroscope. He first connected the battery and the lamp lighted up, so he confirmed the battery had no problems. Next, he connected the wiring on both sides of the motor with the electroscope, finding that the lamp didn’t work. Therefore, Tony guessed there was something wrong in the wiring, so the motor couldn’t receive power to work. Finally, they found the wire dropout. After Tony reconnected the wiring, the tank was restored. Walter was quite appreciative of Tony’s h e l p, s o h e p l a y e d happily with Tony. 1 4 Electroscope x2 x6 x1 x1x2 x1 x1 x4 x2 x1 x2 x2 x2 x1 19 20 21 22 23 43 44 45 49 53 54 5 x1 2 Daily Application 63 64

  • 34. S e s s i o n 18 Safety Circuit Parts List Brainstorming D a n g e r s m ay o c c u r d u e t o careless operation of appliances. Can you name some examples? A safety circuit is an automatic protection system in emergency conditions. It can sense the potential danger and take necessary measures to reduce the risks, but it doesn’t mean it is perfect . For instance, an elevator installed with a safety circuit may be stopped from falling down when the automatic brake is triggered if elevator excesses the setting speed due to cable rupture or elevator faults. Helen traveled to Europe independently in her summer vocation. She decided to experience the beauty of the city by light rail for she had never seen a light rail with only two carriages. After boarding the light rail vehicle, she enjoyed the street scenes that are different from what was shown in the movies. Suddenly, she felt a strong impact and fell down; after she stood up again, she found out that the vehicle had derailed. After returning to the hotel and watching the news on TV, she learned that the vehicle was controlled manually without any safety facilities such as speed limitation device and automatic brakes installed. The vehicle was running at full speed in the straight sections, and the driver failed to brake in advance when coming to the turns, so the train was easily derailed due to over speed turning. Kids, do you know that installing an automatic brake in vehicles can avoid the accidents caused by overspeeding? 1 4 10 Automatic Brakes x2 x4 x2 x4 x2 x1 x4 x2 x4 x2 x1 x1x1 x1 x2 x2 x2 x1 x20 x4 2 6 9 19 20 21 23 x1 24 x2 29 30 32 33 40 42 43 12 14 15 5 01 03 02 04 Daily Application 67 68

  • 36. S e s s i o n 19 Intelligent Circuits Parts List Brainstorming There are a lot of intelligent electrical apparatus that are convenient to use. Can you name some of them? The buildings and architectures nowadays are specified to have fire-alarm equipment installed to guarantee the safety of people. Inside the fire-alarm there are intelligent circuits which are able to detect the smoke density and temperature change in environments. For example, if someone has to leave the kitchen while he is cooking and forgets to cut off the fire, fire disasters may occur. To remind the residents early, it is quite necessary to install fire-alarm devices in the kitchen. Paul likes imagining his future occupation and always took his father’s hands while his father was reading newspapers and asked about the future world. One day, his father was beat and made Paul seat down to talk about the future world. Father told him the future world would be an intelligent world of electricity. All electric devices can be connected together just like the linkage of computers to the internet, by which a connecting pipe is established in the world and the condition of being with each other though far apart can be realized preliminarily. Besides, all electric devices are equipped with intelligent circuits in the future. Any situations that are supposed to not happen will be transformed into abnormal signals and sent to the control center instantly as well as the owner’s smart phone or other smart devices, to realize the remote alarm.
