29. First Rule
The first rule of writing verbs in
past tense is to add “-ed”
Formula: Verb + ‘ed’

30. Example:
I watch(ed) a movie with my
grandmother last night.

31. Second Rule
When a consonant comes before a
consonant in a verb, we simply add
‘ed’.
Formula: Consonant + consonant = + ‘ed’

32. Example:
Aslam ta(l)(k)-ed to me yesterday.

33. Third Rule
When a consonant comes before a vowel
in a verb, we simply remove the vowel and
add ‘ed’.
Formula: Consonant + Vowel = (e) + (ed)

34. Example:
My father sh(a)(v)(e) +(ed) his head
yesterday.

35. Changing “y” to “i” + “ed”
There are two rules we follow when we
change the verbs ending in ‘y’ to ‘i’ +
‘ed’

36. First Rule
Removing the -’Y’
Formula: Consonant + Consonant = (y) + (ied)

37. Example:
I car(r)(y)ied my school bag all day.
When a consonant comes before a verb, we simply
remove the ‘y’ and add ‘i + ed’.

Changing “y” to “i” + “ed”
Formula: Vowel + Consonant = +(ed)

39. Example:
Ali pl(a)(y)+(ed) all day yesterday.
When a vowel comes before a consonant in a verb,
we simply add ‘ed’.
