3. FAMILY
• DharamPal Gulati was born to Mahashay Chunnilal Gulati
and Mata Chanan Devi in a Khatri family on 27th March
1923 in Sialkot, North-East Punjab, Pakistan.
• He had 2 brothers and 5 sisters. His brothers, Mahashay
Satpal Gulati and Dharamveer Gulati, were also
businessmen.
• In 1941, when he was 18 years old, he got married to
Lilawati, but in 1992, she died.
• He had 2 sons, his son Sanjiv Gulati died in just 2 months
after his mother’s death in 1992. Gulati had 6 daughters.
4. CAREER
• After Partition, Gulati and his family came to India with barely Rs 1,500 to
call their own.
• He has flunked his 5th standard and started working at early age. Before
finally stepping into Masala’s business, he had done multiple businesses
from selling rice to soaps to selling woods. He has also pulled the ‘tanga’
on Delhi’s road.
• After working as a tangawala, he decided to open his ancestral business of
spices in Delhi. This decision came when he sold off his carriage on
October 10th, 1948. He opened a small shop in Ajmal khan Road, Karol
Bagh, and gradually expanded his business again raised the banner of
Mahashian Di Hatti of Sialkot “DEGGI MIRCH WALE”.
6. MAHASHIAN DI HATTI (MDH)
• MDH is the second largest leader in the Indian market with 12% market
share, following S Narendrakumar's Everest Spices.
• MDH has a range of offices abroad, including those in Dubai and
London. The organisation exports its goods to over 100 nations. Gulati’s
son now oversees the overall operations and six daughters wisely
oversee the area of distribution.
• MDH today has a range of 62 products available in over 150 different
packages.
• Deggi Mirch, Chat Masala and Chana Masala – earn the bulk of its sales.
Reportedly, each of these items sells over one crore packets per month.
• In 2017, he was the highest paid CEO in India with salary of Rs. 21
crore/year. In 2017, his company’s turnover was around Rs. 1000 crore.
According to a report in 2014, his net worth was Rs. 500 crore.
7. MDH BRAND AMBASSDOR
• MDH launched its first television ad in 1984 featuring Dharampal Gulati.
The ad also featured veteran actors Shafi Inamdar and Neena Gupta.
• Soon after, all the TV ads featured Dharam Pal as the brand ambassador
for his company. The cardboard box pack, launched in 1948, also carried
his photograph.
• MDH Masala jingle – “Asli masala sach sach, MDH...MDH”.
• MDH recently celebrated its 100th anniversary by releasing an ad
featuring Gulati.
8. CHARITY WORK
• MDH under the leadership of Mahashay Dharam Pal has developed more than 20
schools including MDH International School, Mahashay Chunnilal Saraswati
Shishu Mandir (named after his father), Mata Lilawati Kanya Vidyalaya (named
after his late wife), and Mahashay Dharampal Vidya Mandir etc.
• He started a 10-bed eye hospital at Arya Samaj, Subhash Nagar, in November
1975. Later in January 1984, a 20-bed hospital was established in Janakpuri,
New Delhi to commemorate his mother Mata Chanan Devi. Now it has 300 beds
in about 5 acres of land, the hospital is equipped with MRI, CT scan, Heart
Wing, Neuro Sciences, IVF etc.
• Most recently, he supported the fight against the novel coronavirus by donating
PPE kits and an undisclosed amount to Delhi CM Relief Fund.
9. AWARDS & RECOGNITION
• In 2016, he was named ‘Indian of the year’ at ABCI Annual Awards.
• In 2017, Gulati received ‘Excellence Award’ for Lifetime achievement.
• On March 16, 2019, he was honored the Padma Bhushan, India's third highest
civilian award, by the 14th President of India Shri Ram Nath Kovind for Trade
& Industry.
