2. A Brief Introduction
Born on 7 september 1933 in Ahmedabad and an Indian
cooperative organizer .
Part of the international labour, cooperative, women, and
micro-finance movements and also she has won several
national and international awards.
Spent her life fighting for the rights and welfare of
India's 'invisible' workers.
Her grandparents worked with mahatma Gandhi in the
non-violent struggle for Indian independence from the
British.
Deeply influenced by Gandhi, she followed his ideals all
her life.

3. Early Life & Background
Born in Ahmedabad in India.
She spent her childhood in Surat where she attended
the sarvajanik girls high school from 1940 to 1948.
She received bachelor of arts degree in English from the M.T.V.
College in 1952.
In 1954 , following her graduation she join l.A shah law collage
where she received her degree in law and A gold medal for her
work on Hindu law.

4. HER IDEAS
She has pioneered the idea that “people themselves, no
matter how poor or uneducated, are able to solve their
own problems if they organize together to do so”.
Ela soon found that women were doing many of the
labor-intensive tasks needed in textile production, as
well as in other fields of work.

5. TLA and SEWA
In 1968, Ela was asked by the TLA to head its women's wing.
Ela Bhatt undertook to organize these self-employed women into a
union under the women's wing of the TLA. Then in 1972 the self-
employed women's association (SEWA) was established where she
served as general-secretary from 1972 to 1996.
She founded sewa(self-employed women's association in India) to
organize for better pay and working conditions.
Sewa, which today has 2,50,000 members, helped workers at the lowest
level of society become empowered to take control of their lives.
She also founded sewa bank, which is totally for woman's and the first
step is saving.

6. The Elders
In 2007 she joined the elders, a group of world leaders that was founded by
nelson Mandela to promote human rights and peace.
She became an emeritus member in 2016.
In February 2012, Bhatt travelled to Bihar, India with fellow elders.
On a youth-led project aimed at preventing child marriage, and encouraged
the state government's efforts to tackle the issue

7. AWARDS AND RECOGNITION
Ela Bhatt was also awarded the civilian honor of Padma shri by the government of
India in 1985, and the Padma Bhushan in 1986.
She was awarded the Ramon Magsaysay award for community leadership in 1977
and the right livelihood award in 1984.
She was chosen for the Niwano peace prize for 2010 for her work empowering poor
women in India.
On November 2010, US secretary honored Mrs. Bhatt with the 1st global fairness
initiative award for helping more than a million poor women in India.
In 2011, Ela Bhatt was selected for the Indira Gandhi prize for peace.
In 2012, US secretary identified Ela Bhatt as one of her 'heroine’.”
